If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online. The great thing about this website is that, at any time, hitting the escape key twice will instantly take your browser to a google search page. In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. That’s 1-800-273-8255. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I'm the daughter of an Asian mother (with traditional and 'tiger parent' values), and a Caucasian father (who is so chill and would be happy no matter what level of success I reach, as long as I am happy). Obviously their marriage was doomed but they stayed together, with me being an only child torn between two polar opposite role models. My tiger mum was unsurprisingly far more vocal, pushy, demanding etc. I also lied about my academic achievements and forged my school reports to make them better (even though I was excelling already as one of the top students, I knew it wasn't good enough). She never picked up on my embellishments because my teachers legitimately had nothing but praise, and I brought home real awards every year. All along, I'd also developed deep depression, crippling anxiety, and anorexia. I started a medical degree and quit attending classes maybe a month in due to my depression, suicidality, and eating disorder worsening... but couldn't face telling my mum, so I kept going to campus and acted like I was still studying. I did that for a whole year until it came crashing down and she found out. She showed nothing but rage.. even accusing me of 'teaching myself' how to be mentally ill etc. It was like she didn't see the damage she was doing to me.. I was literally wasting away, skin on bones, but all she did was use it as more fuel to criticise me.. calling me 'disgusting' for my weight. I'm in my 30s now. Still battling the same issues, still have my mother in my life, still having her constantly criticise everything I do... from the way I walk, the way I talk, the way I look, the things I like, the friends I have, the partners I've had, etc etc etc. I don't feel pity for Jennifer despite knowing how it feels to be under constant pressure and criticism and unrealistic expectations.. but I do think there's something so sickeningly toxic about parents with those sorts of values. It's amazing how cold they can be to their own children... yet oblivious to their cruelty, believing they're only doing what is best for them (and being better than every other parent too).

@@jothriny The timing of your reply couldn't be better. I read it this morning and pondered it, and still thought I couldn't do it to her.. it would crush her, be cruel, be selfish, etc if I did that to her. Then she visited like she does most Saturdays. My most dreaded day every week.. but tonight it was one of the worst and I realised there's no saving this relationship no matter how hard I try to change, and it's doing neither of us any good. So when she stormed out and slammed the door (because I tried explaining why I might do the things she accuses me of, without realising, like talking too loudly, and she does this thing where she says I talk really aggressively in a staccato kind of way, then mimicks it in a very dramatised way... maybe I do talk like that? Maybe I'm being gaslighted? I've asked friends, psychs, even recorded conversations to listen to how I talk and I don't hear it so.. anyway). Here I am, re-reading your comment, and I'm doing it. Blocked her on everything. Told her as she was leaving that if I'm that awful and anger/frustrate you that much, you can cut me out of your life and be happy. But I've told her that countless times over the years and she obviously chooses to insert herself into my life when I'm 36 and live independently. So I'll take the step for her, and myself. I hate the thought of this... especially because my dad passed away in 2022 and its still raw, and I have no siblings or other relatives. But thank you for the comment and giving me the courage. I'm so sorry you suffered and had to make that choice, but I'm glad you're healing and are looking after yourself. Thank you again (and the previous replies I didn't get to).

As an asian/pacific islander I can relate to this so much, most asian families are so toxic, it’s not just parents too even uncles, aunts, and grandparents, especially if y’all live in the same roof, they inflict do much trauma and cause tons of mental health issues (most don’t believe in mental health, atleast from my family) and would never acknowledge it. Sad that she had to resort to this but they really fucked with her head. I hope she heals and finds peace in her life.

Not just Asian families. Eastern Europeans are like that as well. I think it's applicable to nations that struggled (poverty, famine, wars, etc). That fear of poverty takes on that weird form and gets passed down from generation to generation.

my life was similar to hers. but instead of murder i tried to off myself, and i guess after the 4th or 5th time, my parents finally realized something wasn't working in our relationship as parent and child. it's a constant reminder that you *owe* them, that your existence is to succeed and that if you're anything "less" you don't live up to the debt that was being born. i wouldn't ever lay a hand on my mom or dad. but my own body was always something disposable or not worth having due to my disabilities and lack of achievements. it really is a culture of pressure, and i envy those who don't break or crack.

I have a curfew, my parents blow my phone up if I take longer than what they think I should, am made to keep my location on, and I have to ask their permission before I leave for anywhere. I put up with it because I would be screwed without their help right now. But I can also tell you it's a huge point of contention between us and it's ruining our relationship. I would also note that if I am paying for your phone, I'll take it away whenever I please. Once again, she's an adult with a job and can get her own phone. @@ammiller3911 Exactly! We've got a really popular proverb in Germany (popular among parents, that is) which goes "as long as you put your feet under my table..." followed by whatever the particulars are for that respective person. I moved out with 19 since my boyfriend (of 4 years) wasn't allowed to sleep over and I still had to ask for permission to go out on school nights (Germany, 13 years of schooling). Again, their house, their rules - easy decision. Stay and do what they want or move out and take charge of your own life.

Because they were never raised to be on their own, the abusive parents use this method to keep the child with them forever (preferably take care of the parent when they get old as well). This 4 AM upload time is great for insomniacs like me! I just hope my Monday is going to be way more peaceful than my Sunday. I accidentally created chlorine gas by putting bleach on the kitchen counter and forgetting about it when I added white vinegar three hours later. I went to the ER just in case, and of course I was fine when a doctor finally saw me hours later. I still had to do minor shopping and kill ants while I ate dinner and washed the kitchen floor and created a sugar and Borax mixture...

For the people claiming that “this is why I won’t be such a strict parent” is ridiculous. I grew up with strict Asian parents that yes, had high expectations and yes sometimes it made me wanna run away. But I do know they genuinely loved and cared for me and in no way did I ever for one second think about murdering them!!!!!!! She is a self centered psychopath!!! This has nothing to do with being her parents fault!

@@oldmandoinghighkicksonlyin1368 that’s irrelevant. That has no link to someone being a psychopath... yes strict expectations can lead to depression and other issues but jennifer was a psychopath! Do you understand that let’s say it wasn’t her parents being strict... it could have been something else like her bf cheating on her with another girl. She’s a psychopath so she’d prob murder that girl! I’m saying the link to her crimes is psychopathy and not a result from strict parents. I ran away from home and had strained relationships with my parents because they’re strict. But I never thought about murdering them. Cause I’m not a psychopath. Get the difference homie?

Honestly this girl is as much as a victim as them. This is a very extreme solution to a situation with no solution. Her parents would have had that hold on her for her whole life, and she was conditioned to feel obligated to them. I knew a guy in high school who couldn't go out, go to school, or have friends because his family said so he was 24 or 25 at the time. She shows no remorse because to her there was no way out. This girl never knew freedom, and prison was probably a getaway for her. That does not excuse it but I hope she has found some love in peace where she is at.
@lumpchunker5516
@lumpchunker5516 Год назад
My best friend in elementary school was in the same situation. Only allowed out of the house for school, and not allowed to have friends or have any kind of life outside of reading books in her room. I used to sneak in through her bedroom window to keep her company, and have her over for lunch every school day so we could actually hang out and have fun. I'll never understand how parents can be so brutally overprotective. It doesn't teach kids to be responsible and successful. It teaches them to hide, to lie, and to distrust people around them. It's really sad.
@srahhh
@srahhh 3 года назад
This case has some of the most classic Columbo-style detective work. I really think that they made the final decision about her potential involvement & to pursue questioning her as a suspect based on one pivotal thing... the safe. There's a big safe in her parent's bedroom. She doesn't mention it in her story; the detective has to ask about it. The intruders didn't even try getting into it. Why? There was no money in the safe. But they wouldn't have known that it wasn't worth their while... unless Jennifer had told them. If they were actual robbers, they would have at least tried to get it open, or demanded the combination from her family while asking where their wallets were. It would've, at the very least, featured in her story. She honestly just didn't think it through logically, and towards the end of her interrogation it's a huge (but subtle) tipping point where she realizes her story is completely crumbling as the detective confirms that she had knowledge that the safe was empty of valuables.

I think by “successful” the father meant a degree in which she’d be able to find employment in that field. Having a degree in pharmacology can get you a job/career much quicker than kinesiology since there are tons of pharmacies and hospitals, and having a degree in kinesiology would require you to be a specialist, which I assume would be more scarce in the job market and would also require being an intern.

I've said it before, and I stand by it... Jen's actions are completely criminal, and she always had the option to go live on her own without their control, (or support) so she was hardly trapped there. However, parents who expect nothing less than perfection from their kids, with no understanding of their kid's true abilities and dreams (sorry folks, but not all of us have the want and drive to be MDs or Olympians) really need to take a step back and think about all the consequences. If even one of them starts to ease off because of fears their kid might snap and murder them, that's still good news for the kids growing up with soul-crushing demands.
