Scotty Cannon has a story to tell. The six-time Pro Modified champion will forever be known as one of the most iconic figures in the volatile doorslammer class, but what is not common knowledge is the hard road he traveled to reach this status.
Cannon learned from the locals how to make a car run well and how to win. He also used a headstrong attitude when it came to just participating in drag racing against his father's will. The more he learned, the more he became involved.
Cannon was in the right place at the right time as the Pro Modified movement swept the southeastern United States. By his sophomore season as a professional he had established himself as the champion to beat. In this episode of Legends: The Series, Cannon discusses his road from a naive kid wanting to drive fast to the favorite target of the rulesmakers to his unexpected road to fulfilling a dream.
As Cannon reveals, "Don't dig your hole so deep chasing your dream that you cannot get out of it if you need to."

God Bless Scotty, when I was a kid my dad took me to my first drag race ever in Thunder Valley Bristol. I fell in love with Scotty's Willy's and dad took me over to see it in the pits and Scotty saw me admiring his car and he came over and picked me up, brought me and dad in to his trailer and hung out with us for what seemed like forever. I still have the shirt he gave me and autographed for me. To this day the 41 Willy's is still my favorite car, when I got older and started reading dads old hot rod mags I found out what gassers were and was hooked.

I repainted the Willy's (I don't know if was sold to 1 of his friends or swapped) , but they ran together. It went from the Red "Killer Tomato" to Black with Banana flames. I'm 5'10 178lbs. and it just a roller at the time... He's got balls to run like he did, with a full roll cage and the body cage. Nice man too.

I couldn't re-do that air brushing, saved it and painted the car black with the Banana Flames (Old School flames) Jason Scruggs was from Black to Red Corvette, I spent more time on it than I should have, but he was so tickled he gave me an arm full of free t-shirts. LOL Worlds fastest small block .. that was B4 the ADRL record runs. I'd hate to even look at what probably happened to the time I spent on them. Fun days.. late 90s

Great watch, i feel very fortunate i got involved in this sport in the 80,s and sure every one says the good old days and that was what they said in the 80,s about the years before but to have seen the racing, the drivers, the cars through the 80,s and to now i am now saying the good old days were back from today, i watched so much from a long way away in a little country called Australia and feel fortunate to have travelled to the US and seen the best and then seen some of them come to Australia, Cannon was certainly a drawcard when he came here and just another great memory, i hope this series goes on too, in the mucked up world we are in today this series is just about the best thing in drag racing journalism.

I had the pleasure of working with him and his son on his sons promod up in Tulsa years ago -he is a super smart and super nice great guy!! - they were both VERY hands on. Scotty Sr. tuned the car and his son Scotty jr. built motors, clutches, etc. I helped him build the clutches pressure plates, etc. in Tulsa.. it's just such a bummer what happened with Torco Racing Fuels and its effect on SOOO many racing teams in Promod, Fuel Classes, etc.. seems the IHRA really got it the worst, but it was bad all the way around 🙁 -- but I still have fond memories of all that though, this is one of my favorite Legends episodes, such an innovator and down-to-earth guy!

Are you serious? How about you do your homework next time you try to discredit someone. He was a legend before he ever got to Funny Car. The winningest driver ever in IHRA Pro Modified, and remained as such a decade after he left IHRA at the end of the 1998 season. In the first decade, he won six world championships in the first eight seasons of the class and stands as the only Pro Modified driver inducted into the drag racing Hall of Fame.

My favorite memories about Scotty Cannon weren't even at the drag races they were growing up on lake Hartwell in South Carolina. Scotty had a Viper Red 25 Talon Race Boat. If I am not mistaken he had a pro mod motor in it with a mercury 6 drive it was by far the fastest boat on the lake and he ran it wide open all the time. I would literally run down to the lake when I would hear him coming from a mile away to watch him go by. The boat was bright red with a white Oakley symbol going down the center of each side of the boat. I have wondered for close to 20 years what ever happened to that boat and where scotty went or if he is still living on or near lake Hartwell. Hope he is doing well.
