Idiots. Tunnels are never needed. They claim to save money meanwhile dozens of gravel yards have excess materiel for sale that could build alternative routes. They approve building permits that are unwise and proven to cause traffic jams, apartments and small residential lots (sardine can theory) usually the culprit. The media could care less, never studying or talking about it on their own.
It was the MOST expensive option of all those. As an added idiocy the tunnel has one LESS lane than the viaduct it is replacing. Higher price, Less capacity, Go Seattle!
There was a previous 8 inch steel well casting that damaged the blades for 4 years the drill finally finished the path in 2017 thanks for the 8 year old news youtube giving me "great" recommendations

When California goes down seattle will follow, what a big mistake , they should making highways out of the city for when the earthquake hits. Theres another city below seattle, a city that existed for a long time.
I love the comment that the pre-existing road way is ugly, old and will fall down some day if the earth moves...what do you think will happen underground if they have an earth quake, which starts underground? The "earth" moves, it's mother nature, she will take that tunnel out, I pray it don't happen, but more than likely it will...because it will get old and ugly too.....technology can not beat mother nature -
Modern TBM-created tunnels are lined with small, curved panels of high-density concrete. This is done to make the tunnel more flexible. In the event of an earthquake, only some of these panels will crack or fall out instead of a huge solid cylinder cracking all over the place.

Wouldn't it be logical and rational if the Earth moves from an earthquake or any sort of seismic activity that tunnels underground would also collapse?
I thought it was funny that the engineer commented how hazardous the above ground freeways are due to the ground shaking (earthquakes) and how much more catastrophic it would be to get caught UNDERGROUND in an earthquake. They're just making money, and playing with toys. 🙄
Nah, tunnels are the safest place to be during an earthquake. The shock ripples on the surface leaving tunnels nearly untouched, like a submarine below a hurricane. And Aboveground Highways are dangerous, during the San Francisco Earthquake in the 80's a highway viaduct collapsed, killing many.

This is old news. But for all your information the tunnel opened to traffic this year! (2019) A bit late and horrendously over budget but at least it is not like the Boston tunnel that will continue on indefinitely!

I've seen that plane twice. Both times, very fast and noiseless. One time at least 3 times the speed of an airliner and a lot higher, over Portland, Oregon. One time south of Salem, Oregon.
