Been having the feeling that coming back to Seattle was a big mistake. But instead of being negative, I decided to do something touristy in an effort to find some joy in this city.
Today I took the Water Taxi from West Seattle to downtown. Riding the water taxi is always an enjoyable experience. Then I walked to Pike Place Market. And I bought lunch at Beechers Cheese. They make a great mac&cheese. I finished my time in downtown Seattle with a stop in at Storyville Coffee. Storyville Coffee is a fanciful cafe that serves some of the best coffee in Seattle.
This was exactly the day I needed to regain my joy of Seattle.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

I moved to Seattle 33 years ago from Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. My brother had moved there after college, and I visited him in December, and was so happy to see no snow that I applied for a job on my way back home, and low and behold I was hired. I loved Seattle then, but now homeless drug addicts have been allowed to set up tents any where they please, even in public parks. I'm tired of seeing what looks like mini landfills all over the city. The city completely enables this drug addiction lifestyle. There are no arrests for shop lifting, or drug possession, as long as you're homeless that is. I'm sick of the enabling, and am rapidly nearing retirement age, and it makes me somewhat sad that I can't wait to flee a city I once loved.

Sometimes life takes people on a journey you from Coeur D’Alene to Seattle and I sub to another You Tuber who recently moved from TX returning back home to D’Alene. This Country has a Homeless Epidemic. Im currently traveling CA this week from Venice Beach now in San Francisco and the Epidemic is EVERYWHERE / SAD.

The new mayor has cleaned the parks remarkably well. I would give them another shot. Downtown and some side streets can still be filled with rundown RV’s and refuse, but the city is starting to crack down on the long term ‘rolling’ encampments.
@dh2392
@dh2392 Год назад
@@j.glover1838 I agree, the new mayor Bruce Harrell is a lot better than Jenny Durkan was. The problem is the city council members, they sell this narrative that the homeless are victims of unaffordable housing. Now personally if I couldn't afford to live here, I would find another job, and relocate to where I could afford to live before I chose to live on the streets, and anyone would make that choice, unless they know they are unemployable, for example, drug addicts, and that their situation would be the same wherever they are. But let's face it, cities offer more social services, so of course they gather in cities. There are companies all over looking to hire, and yet they're having trouble filling those positions, meanwhile the homeless population grows, so what does one take from this? I take it that more and more are choosing life on the streets over working, as they're given more and more of the things that people generally work for.

I have been going to Starbucks usually about once a week for over 25 years (Seattle native so have gone way before that). However, I've never really had a GOOD cup of coffee there. Pete's I have, as well as smaller places. I guess truly good coffee requires more expense, and as a true modern "planned obsolescence business model' corporation, they feel they don't need to spend that kind of money to make money. I go there because I like having an office with reliable WiFi outside my house on occasion.

I haven't been in that part of Seattle since the Viaduct was removed. I use to live in Seattle as a kid and was downtown almost every weekend with my friends. Other than going down to visit with my niece who lives right downtown on 3rd Ave I really wouldn't consider going back. I moved out of the city and county over 20 years ago and so happy to have done so. Boats! " What the Water Rat said to the Mole: “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” Boats II: A boat is something of a size as to be lifted onto and carried on the deck of a Ship. That is why Submarines are traditionally called "boats" as they were carried on ships to long distance destinations early in their history. They have long since grown too big for that but within the service the term "boats" is used with affection. (Proud "Boat Sailor" here!)

It still looks a LOT like it did when I was a kid. The last census said "Seattle Metro" was 4,000,000. I guess they include Tacoma, Bellevue and maybe Everett in the "metro"? We sure feel it. Growing pains began in the late 80's and early 90's and started up again 2010 or so, on. Hi Scott! Interesting trip. FYI (The main difference between a boat and a ship is that of size. A boat is smaller than a ship. A ship is very large and humungous and can fit many boats in it.). It also said that ships can travel the ocean and boats don’t but then that should exclude all fishing trollers. I’d say that water taxi could be a small ship? That coffee sure must be good if you walked back for it! After all, you were there for the day and why not! This was a nice tour of a city I will never visit. Now I hope you can find a more quiet home to visit. See ya soon😎

You need to read "Tinkerbelle" by Robert Manry. He sailed his 13 1/2 foot "ship" across the Atlantic. A boat can be carried on a Ship.

Wow! That was very interesting. It was like old home week for me. I had several relatives who moved out to Seattle during the war to work in the defense industry. One couple lived on Vashon Island, another in South Seattle, another in Renton, and another on Mercer Island just above where the hydroplane races were held. We used to watch the races from their balcony. I also had friends in Snohomish. I visited these people from the 1960's to 2005 a year before the last aunt died at the age of 97. I was at Pike Place before there was a Starbucks or a Space Needle. I was there again in 1962 after a hike I took from Lake Chalon to Diablo Dam with a couple college buddies when I was at Cal, again on the way to the Worlds Fair in Vancouver in 1986, and again in 2005 when I toured the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier with my grandson, when my nephew was serving on the ship. Thanks so much for bringing back a lot of memories!

Cafe Lardo is good too, they have one very close to Pike Place. I went there on the day it really snowed and everyone stayed home so they where giving away food since no one showed up and they would have had to toss it. Lucky me! I was there to see a concert that day which didn't get canceled.

Just a quick question from a Seattlite. And I'm not attacking you. Do you feel your values line up with your fellow Texans? Like as far as Texas having a lot of conservatives and far right leaning individuals? I just know that most Seattelites are so naturally liberal that we don't even reize how liberal we are. Also to us even the word liberal is a bit passe you know? I just wonder how it is living there in a very red state and how that matches up with your values?

My husband and I honeymooned in Puget Sound, moved there five years later with the intent of living there forever. Lived there 20 years. Bought our forever home and 7 years later did an extensive remodel, finishing a few months before the global takeover. Life became unlivable politically so now I live somewhere else. A wonderful place that was intentionally destroyed. A tragedy.

We lived in Burien in the 70s. Use to love taking the bus into town going to Seattle Center when it was still more like it was during the world's fair, Pike Place and the waterfront. None of it looked familiar, not even Pike Place. I use to love to go downstairs where there is a tea shop. I don't drink tea but loved the smells that came out of it.

It's good to see more people out and about downtown. Pioneer Square is picking back up again too. But I also prefer the woods to city noise. It takes getting used to now that things are open back up.

Scott, you really lucked out....both weatherize and Pike Place Market crowd-wise. Early fall can often bring some warm, sunny days in Seattle (but certainly NOT always). But you had a nearly perfect day, weather-wise, for your excursion. Pike Place Market, nowadays, can be completely overrun by multiple thousands of cruise-ship folks. But you obviously snuck in between cruise ships. Glad that you enjoyed a nearly perfect downtown Seattle walkabout....it really can happen, even in 2022. And two-thumbs-up for Storyville Coffee. BTW, as a grad student at UW in the late 1970's, I usually rode a bus downtown from the U District, on Saturday mornings, and shopped for produce at the Pike Place Market. While there, I often picked up a coffee at a funky little place called Starbucks.

Well, Scott, we all really enjoy you sharing your day trip with us. The water taxi is the way to do the tourist thing. Ugh! to the gum wall but you did warn us. At one time, l was a regular customer at Starbucks, please don't judge me too harshly, but Storyville Coffee looks awesome and like Cinderella is going to magically appear as your fairytale barista . I will drink hot coffee but if l had been with you enjoying the sights, sounds, and people, l would have opted for an ice coffee on a sunny day. Does Storyville have iced flavored coffee? I appreciate you not dwelling on the negatives and turning it around to a positive. That is a very important lesson for us all. You also are not afraid to admit to not being certain if water taxis are ships or boats. You have lifted my spirits today so thank you! Remember from whom all blessings flow and God bless you on each and every journey!
