Today's recipe is very special to me because this is one of my all-time favorite soups! Seaweed soup with mussels, or honghap miyeokguk in Korean. I was born and raised on the seashore, so I love all kinds of fish and seafood: this dish combines the healthy, delicious flavor of dried seaweed (miyeok) with the fresh, meaty, irresistible taste of mussels. The resulting soup has all the best flavors of the sea, is good for you, and is totally addictive!

Thank you, Maangchi!! I made honghap miyeokguk tonight. The prep couldn't be simpler. And it turned out so yummy. I added chopped fresh red chili pepper for some heat and vibrant color. I did have to put a little more than two tablespoons of fish sauce (clearly the amount depends on the brands and my taste buds). Maangchi's written recipe says you could use salt instead. But, if you use salt, it for sure will require much much less.

I'll try this one next weekend. I love seaweed. In Portugal after giving birth the woman has to eat chicken soup. The Portuguese variety is very rich. My mom even adds a bit of cabbage. I loved it. Thank you for all the love.

This works great with frozen shrimp, too. I can't ring fresh mussels in my area, but I can find reasonably priced frozen shrimp and bay scallops, which work just as well. Also, if all else fails, tofu.

Hi Maangchi ! I just had to stop by and say hello to you and thank you once again for all of your amazing video's. You give me so much inspiration to try and create these delicious dishes too. You make everything look and taste so good. Some nights I watch your video's and I get a craving for some of the intense flavours of Korean cooking. The only thing I can think about is Kimchi. One of the best creations on Gods green given earth ! LOL , it is that good to me !! As you say , I love it ! lol. I made a soup today with diced pork , onion , garlic , ginger , shredded seaweed , kimchi , sliced shitake mushrooms , fish sauce , sesame oil and a tsp of tom yum paste. It was the tastiest soup ever. Delicious. Happy cooking !

I don't know what it is but I love watching her wash the food, and taste the food. whenever you hear that mouth small k you know the food is good. I've been sick so I'm catching up on her videos. I need to make a trip to the Asian market.

This is awesome!! My mom told me that you can put the clams or mussels into cold water then put a spoon into it. All the sands will come out as well.

Hello Maangchi, please tell me, how many grams of salt per liter water do you take to make seawater? And did you know that you can use a mussel's shell as a pair of tweezers to pick the flesh out of another mussel? And also that when you put a poked fresh chili pepper into the salt water that the mussels will spit out even more sand/dirt? Love your videos; I'm watching all of them! Hugs and best wishes, Markus

We also have it in the Phil.the difference is there is no dried seaweed,we put other veg. leaves like pepper leaves or spinach.

Cover the mussels with a lid so that they are in the dark (simulating the ocean floor) and they release there gunk alot faster. This works for all shellfish. Thanks for your entertaining videos.

everytime i make clam or mussel soups, i add 1 tablespoon sized ginger, and tastes good :) try it sometimes by the way, the seaweed expanded like magic even though is natural hahaha i never tasted that kind of seaweed in my life but i think it really tastes good hahaha

oh my! this looks so delicious...I love mussels! In my country we eat them a lot (with rice and other ingredients, paella, or alone with their own broth) I knew that, in Korean culture, seaweed soup is eaten during your birthday, but I didn't know that it had mussels. @@DivaDen I am not sure but I think seaweed plus mussels / beef / chicken / vegetables in combination . The seaweeds must be very nourishing and strength giving but cannot taste very nice by themselves . I am from India. Here too there are many veg and non veg options for new mothers to have so as to regain their strength and health after childbirth .

Wow I learned something new today about the Korean culture! The Hmong culture has a similar custom for mothers who just gave birth too! For that one month after giving birth, Hmong mothers are to eat boiled chicken!

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up so I wanted to make this for him. I also have many family birthdays coming up too! tips for biginners 1. you can also use dried mussels, shrimp, etc. 2. you can stir-fry the seaweed with sesame oil in the pot before you add water.

After washing rice for cooking, we usually save the water for soaking mussels. Also, we add some pounded hot pepper to the water. That's my family's experience^^
