Episode Notes:
1. All games captured on real hardware via RGB.
2. I own every one of these games.
3. The Saturn version of Rockman X3 runs at a different resolution than both the PS1 and SNES versions, hence the borders and the narrower presentation.
4. Both The Lost World and NBA Jam Extreme look and run better on the Playstation. If you want to try them, I recommend you play those versions instead.
5. Batman Forever was done on the ST-V Titan arcade board, which was essentially the same as the Saturn. However, it used custom sound hardware in the arcade, and sounds different than the home versions.
6. Croc went on to have a sequel on the Playstation and PC.
7. Bug! has a sequel on the Saturn called Bug Too!
8. The Japanese version of Rockman X3 is affordable, often no more than $30 or $40 complete.
9. Ninpen Manmaru is a Japanese exclusive that was based on a manga series there about a ninja penguin.

Bug 1 and 2 are definitely a call back to what Sega of Japan believed games would be like in the future, 2d with 3D backgrounds and objects
@DTM-Books
@DTM-Books 4 года назад
To be more accurate, the Bug games were created by an American software studio named Realtime Associates. The Clockwork Knight games were created by Sega Japan, and this offers an interesting study in East vs West game design. Both series are a product of that experimental era and have their pros and cons.

I paused the video towards the end of it and looked to see what the rest of the video was. I was going to close the tab then I scrolled down to check out the comments. When you mentioned his speech at the end I decided to watch until the end. I agree. The speech was something more people need to understand. We all have different needs and wants out of our entertainment mediums. I could never get into any of the 3D platformers. Not Super Mario 64. Not Crash. The only exception was the first three Ratchet and Clank games. Beyond that I don't have the willingness to learn how to play them and the weird angles and stuff made it not feel like it was worth my time. Thanks for letting me know about the speech at the end. Sega Lord X: Thanks for your content. You've been very consistent in having high quality material since I've followed you. I look forward to seeing what else you put out.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments at the end. I haven't experienced it much with games; since they can be such a money sink, I usually look into them before buying and have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting. But I have often felt this way about movies, which I tend to enter blindly. The movies I like the least are usually ones that I had some expectation for. Expectations are the biggest killers of enjoyment. I've also found that no one ever loves something as much as I do. And on the rare occasions when I find someone who does love the same thing I do, it is often for different reasons. Trying to make someone share your love for something is usually a task doomed to disappointment. Better, then, to accept the differences and realize that things don't need to meet our expectations. Whether they be video games, our friends, or anything really.

Adding backward compatibility would have greatly increased the cost of Dreamcast, and price was one of their highest concerns. In addition, the hardware designs for Saturn & DC are very different, which would mean essentially housing two consoles inside the same motherboard. It just wan't a practical option for Sega.

I enjoyed Bug but SLX is spot on with his criticism. The jerky camera is a problem you have to learn to contend with and make no mistake, despite being a platformer there are sections that are more trial and error than anything else. With enough practice the entire game can be completed comfortably. For me, it was the character design and music that kept me interested.

Hi SLX! One interesting tidbit about Mega Man X3 on the Saturn is that those borders are only in the Saturn version! The SNES of course doesn't use square pixels, and while other consoles from this era had 256-wide modes, notably PlayStation on which MMX3 was also released, as well as SEGA's own Mega Drive, the Saturn for whatever reason doesn't support this screen mode, so when it came to porting this game to the Saturn, the developers decided to fill the extra screen space with border art. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on Saturn actually has a similar problem, as the PlayStation version uses a 256-wide resolution. On Saturn, they decided to upscale all the graphics to 320 pixels wide, resulting in some strange looking visual errors.

@drspod
@drspod 4 года назад
That was my thought exactly the first time I loaded it up. There's a video over on GameHut where Jon Burton talks about his game Rascal on the PSX ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aHCFMQIzzwo.html ), and he mentions how it was the publisher (Psygnosis) who requested that they use the Tomb Raider style tank controls, which was the decision that killed the playability of the game. I wonder whether the same thing happened with Croc, even though it was published by a different publisher (Fox Interactive). Tomb Raider was so influential as one of the first really successful 3D platformers (it was released one full year before Croc), that publishers thought that developers should just copy the same formula. It worked for Tomb Raider right, so why not for our new game? As we now know, a control scheme that works well for one game might not be the best choice for other games, even those of a superficialy similar style.

Well said. We like what we like. As a fellow critic, I've had to adjust my viewpoint over the years. While I try to steer people clear of garbage, really my opinion is only useful if others agree with me. One of the best compliments a critic can be given (IMO) is "Thanks! Now I know to do the OPPOSITE of what you recommend!" And I'm not kidding. Because if someone opinion is directly opposite of yours and they hate all the things you like and like all the things you hate, their in-depth descriptions can be incredibly useful. I myself love a lot of games that you hate, but you showed me so many games I have never heard of that I owe you an enormous debt of gratitude.

It's great that you were able to see new things to appreciate about some of the games featured here, and even if your opinion didn't change with all of them, you can at least articulate why. That music at the end also has me convinced that you need to do a livestream of Batman for the NES, or possibly PCE.

Being honest here, I can't stand the Saturn MMX3 soundtrack and I prefer the original much more. Blizzard Buffalo and the opening level were my favorite tracks and they turned them into a swing style sound. I can look past the cropping and other problems on the Saturn but man, I mute it ASAP.

I don't think the new compositions are bad, it's just the tone doesn't really match the action or intensity of the game, it's overall more laid back and quiet sounding. The clip shown in the video was the final levels for example, the easy going slowed down music doesn't fit it to me, the music works well outside the game. Still, some tracks are better like Tunnel rhino and the water level.

Mr. Bones always looked interesting. I tried it BRIEFLY as I got the same vibe from it you did initially. Its good to see it broken down more as I may not return to that one. Sometimes I enjoy those weird titles like Three Dirty Dwarves which I aquired randomly from a used mail order company (after trying it on a demo disc) and really enjoyed that one. I especially liked how you had to fight a gym building as one of the bosses. Tried Bug and Croc but like you said, neither grabbed me. If I dont get pulled in early on I lose interest. Its different when you own games during the current time and have less to play, thus are more forgiving. Despite always thinking the Clockwork Knight games looked clunky, I actually really enjoyed beating the second and playing the first one. Fun games despite some clunkiness. Shinobi Legions was another game that was a little sloppy but I enjoyed and got used back in the day. I only owned a few games for the machine. Panzer Dragon 1 and 2, Shinobi Legions, Three Dirty Dwarves, Virtua Fighter and Im not sure if there were any others. Emulation was where I really got to try it out. This was only since 2017 that I had an emulation machine that could run them. Revolution X always felt like a big repetitive mess (the shit music doesnt help, but could be overlooked if the game was good) NBA Jam games were awesome and I dont like sports at all in real life. I believe I played this 3D mess on saturn and shut it off, when playing through the NBA Jam games on all the systems.

Absolutely Love your videos. It has emboldened me to do the same to my collection. Started playing Cyberia on Saturn and man it is a terrible but yet compelling game to just to try to get through ,even though you die 100's of times.

Interesting (in an extremely geeky way) how they used a vertical lines to create the dithered transparency effect in Cool Spot instead of a chequerboard or 'mesh'. Looks kind of cool imo.

The biggest issue for Croc for me is the tank controls. Tank controls and platforming leads to a bad time.

I do love Mr. Bones and Bug! in spite of their flaws. They just have that distinct Saturn 'feel' to them. Honestly I've given The Lost World a chance a fair amount of times, but it's never clicked with me.

I felt the same way when it came to Realtime Associates Iron Man X-O Manowar In Heavy Metal. When I 1st played it I absolutely hated it, but after playing it again many years later I found myself actually enjoying it. It's definitely nowhere as bad as the reviews said it was. It's not great that's for sure, but it's a perfectly serviceable 2.5D action shooter/platformer that's even more enjoyable in 2 player co-op.

@SegaLordX you should do a story about why NBA Jam Extreme exists, and how acclaim ended up with that license, necessitating the creation of the hang time series.

yeah ur explanation of bug was spot on. i went from liking the game alot to finding it to wear my patience as well as finding it to be to difficult. they also shouldnt have made it soo easy to die in there. i also found it to get u a bit dizzy at times. this and nights into dreams used to get me really really dizzy. too me the highlights of this system were mega man 8 and X4 as well as x-men vs street fighter ( of course u needed the japanese expansion thingy).

SLX, how does Batman Forever play in player mode? Maybe some of the enemy issues might have been better managed with a second player helping? Good video. Of the titles shown I had Bug! (it was one of the near launch titles iirc) and Croc. I picked up Croc for many of the same reasons you did, to see a 3D platformer on the Saturn. I don't recall if the Saturn version supported the analog controller ( I want to say it didn't) but that aspect is just one of the differences Mario 64 had over it.
