F2 buckfast queens get a hard time I think. In this video I’m going to show you the difference between each give and I’ll let you guys make your minds up which one you think is better.

Andy is the beekeeper so unfortunately you've got to listen to him on most of the videos but sometimes Kay can be convinced to show an appearance, however Kay is the creative mind behind PYH, creating all of our scented candles, lip balms, moisturiser bars, branding, beeswax wraps, we are constantly expanding the bee products we sell all as natural and sustainably sourced as possible. The bees come first in our little venture as without the bees we would have nothing so no excess honey is removed if Andy thinks it will put the hive at risk, so the honey goes fast!

11.43 nearly squashed against hive when put on floor on left side as we looked at the first frame

Winner winner! Exactly that moment, didn’t realise at the time. I later saw her as I put that frame back in which is at the end of the video as a good clue.

I have found that the later in the season the queen gets mated, the more pissy the colony is. any one else experienced this.

If you are surrounded by buckfast colonies, then F2,F3..... genetics will be fine. However, a f2 buckfast queen open mated with predominately AMM locally adapted black bees, then surely it's potluck regarding temperment?

I agree, I can’t remember if I edited the section out. There is a big bee farmer in the area and I believe he spends a lot of money on Buckfast queens which should flood the surrounding areas with good drones

Did l hear you say workers put an egg in a queen cup? Were you thinking of laying workers. Never heard of that before?

The queen secretes an inhibiting pheromone so the workers don’t lay eggs. In the queen’s absence, a worker could lay unfertilized eggs which can only yield drones.

why do you use national brood boxes all professional beekeepers use either 14x12 or dadant hives think of the time you will save and your Queens will also benefit not having to go from brood box to super ect ect why nOT READ bEEKEEPING AT bUCKFAST ABBEY by Brother ADAM AFTER ALL HE Bred your bees

That’s a great comment to be fair and I’m actually thinking about Langstroth hives. I’m wanting to do some reading and that book you mentioned is very good. I’m just taking the time to find out what could works best for me and the bees

A lot of bee farmers use standard national deeps. I use both national and langstroths. The benefit of national is the frames can be used easily in new splits and using a qe between 2 national boxes frames can be cycled up and down. I would guess most buckfast today are bred using brother Adams suggested methods but most likely using different lines of bees so most probable they are different from brother Adams actual stocks. His book is a definite good read.
