How well do kids know their parents? Hopefully well enough to send them on a romantic “Second Honeymoon.”
Created and produced by legendary game show host Wink Martindale and Jerry Gilden, “Second Honeymoon” (or 2nd Honeymoon) was similar in format to “The Newlywed Game” but had the novel element of adding kids.
Hosted by Wayne Cox, who also hosted the Canadian hit TV game show “Talk About,” “Second Honeymoon” featured three married couples and their children competing against each other.
The kids were asked questions about their moms and dads and the parents were then asked the same questions. If their answers were the same, the families would earn points. In the third round, the children teamed up with their mother to see how well they both knew their father/husband. The family with the most points at the end of the show earned the honeymoon.
“It was just one of those games that caught on for obvious reasons,” says Martindale. “It was clean, it involved the family, other families watching on television could relate to it. It was just a perfect show and it’s still seen in some areas of the country to this day.”
Martindale credits Cox for making “Second Honeymoon” such a success.
“He was so good. He was such a good interviewer,” recalls Martindale.
The show may have been a success but it didn’t stop Mental Floss from naming it one of the most awkward Canadian game shows.
“Second Honeymoon” aired on Global TV from 1987 to 1988.
"The Search For Canada's Game Shows" is a six-episode documentary series that takes you on a trip down memory lane featuring interviews with game show icons like Howie Mandel and Wink Martindale. You'll learn how an American quiz show scandal became a boon to Canada's game show industry, enjoy a look at the early careers of game show legends like Monty Hall and Alex Trebek, and get the behind-the-scenes stories of how some of Canada's most inventive game shows like "The Mad Dash" and "Bumper Stumpers" came to be.
The series is also a hunt for game show footage thought lost to time. History has not been kind to some of Canada's finest game show entries; due to the practice of wiping, some have been almost completely erased from the archives. However, we've dug deep to unearth classic footage from all of your favourite shows, including home video recordings from viewers like you!
"The Search for Canada's Game Shows" is narrated by Wayne Cox, the host of fan favourites like "Acting Crazy," "Talk About" and "Second Honeymoon." Join us on January 16th at 7 PM for a special two-episode premiere!

Last Word taped circa SUmmer 1989 aired in Fall 1989 in the US, and Second Honeymoon aired weekly on CBN from Sep 1987-Sep 1988. I think it aired on a weeknight at 8 or 8:30PM. CBN's rebranding as the Family channel in 1988 probably kept Second Honeymoon from getting a second season. Bumper Stumpers premiered in the US on USA network about three months before Second Honeymoon premiered.

Yes so Bumper Stumpers and Second Honeymoon came before the last word.

Under Canada rules, if the host is not Canadian, or has no Canadians in their Family Tree, they need to have a co-host that is Canadian. The Last Word is one example.

I believe that rule only applies if the show is syndicated to the US, which is the goal for many of these shows (larger audiences). Even though Definition was never aired on a US station, Jim Perry would have qualified because he had family ties (his mom?), and I believe ended up becoming a dual citizen because of all the work up there.

Just like when Geoff Edwards replaced Blake Emmons as host for “The New Chain Reaction” and had announcer Rod Charlebois as his sidekick.

@@jerrywright4886 I remember Chain Reaction when American Geoff Edwards took over for Blake Emmons, due to Canadian content laws, announcer Rod Charlebois was hired as announcer and co-host. Whenever the show had its closing minutes, Rod would give Geoff a puzzle to solve.

@@someguy23475 it’s also the reason that Alex Trebek and Monty Hall really didn’t need co-hosts on Pitfall or Split Second respectively because Trebek and Hall were both Canadian by birth. If Howie Mandel did a show taped in Canada for American syndication, he wouldn’t need a co-host because he too is Canadian by birth.

In Wink Martingale’s case, that honor went to Jennifer Lyall.
