Second Test Drive on the CBR 1000 Off Road Buggy 

I'm telling you, just like I said last time that bike isn't running right. I don't know if the timing is off or the firing order is wrong. Something's not right. Been around bikes my whole life. Used to race them for a short while. That is not what an inline four it's supposed to sound like. Do yourself a favor and get an official repair manual. You can find copies on eBay for like five bucks. Check the easy stuff first like timing and firing order. Then check to see what else could be wrong with the ignition system.

I'm going to parrot everyone else here and say the same thing: I would first make suspension adjustments, and then get the engine to run on all cylinders. I love this project, though. With some refinement, this machine has the potential to be a beast! Keep up the good work!

I’d say it’s only running on 2 or 3 cylinders for sure. Just doesn’t sound right.

It sounds terrible, definitely not running right it should rev up a lot higher.

when you fly off of a jump,and let off the gas,it will cause the front end to nose dive.try keeping the gas on until you hit the ground. Give it a try

Doesn't sound right tho. Do a compression test and a spark removal test to see of things are copacetic in that respect, finally, triple check the firing order. Something's wrong. Edit: because maybe i'm not clear in the explanation, the spark removal test is the usual stuff, you remove a coil at a time with the engine running, as you know, BUT, there's one other thing you need to do, which is swapping the bad coil around, because there's that issue too. One other thing i'd check, how much ohms you're getting on your coils. Most JP bikes should be around 0.31~-0.33, the owner's manual should have the specific coil ohm value.

Definitely not hitting on all of the cylinders. Not sure if banging it off of the rev limiter at start up helped either.

The jump is shorter than the wheel base so it will always buck , no amount of holding the throttle on and suspension setup will change that. Awesome job on the buggy ! Looks like it handles well!

That thing is bad ass, im not lieing when I say I would rather buy that then a rzr or any other brand of side by side out there, the things you come up, are badass. Don't ever doubt your skills.

I want to see your buddy hit that jump going the speed he’s at while doing a hot lap. Also I think you’re shifting too soon. Keep the rpm’s a little on the high side. I think you’re lugging the motor down a bit.

Definitely running on 3cyl pull the coils up one by one to identify what cylinder. That and a sway bar will be a game changer

With a buggy like that and a jump like that you need to go slower into the jump and hammer down as your about to hit it like your buddy said but keep it pinned till you touch back down. Preloading the shocks and using the enirsha from the tires spinning to pull the back end down. I used to race dirt bikes when I was a kid and you had to work breaks and gas when in the air from hitting a jump depending on the way you hit it. I would think the concept would be the same.

It’s down a cylinder and those exhaust flaps need to be deleted.

Chris, listen to your buddy about how to jump, he’s right. Give it gas before you hit the jump and keep the power on until after you land, not before. Looks fun!

The jump itself is too short going uphill. So its just getting catapulted. But you were learning towards the end there that you gotta keep in the throttle.

Use your heat gun on the exhaust pipes at the cylinder head and see what cylinder is missing

Hiya Chris, very good job! Looking fab! You should add an expansion tank to the radiator, there is no room for expansion in the motorcycle rads, thats why it's connected to a small plastic tank. Just connect it to the small barb fitting underneath the radiator cap. 👌👍

There’s something seriously amiss with the way that you’ve got that engine running Chris, it sounds more like a twin cylinder than the high performance 4 cylinder that it’s supposed to be. Edit: I also think that the suspension is set way too soft.

As far as the throttle issue being able to keep your foot on the pedal, they make a pedal for boats for choppy water you might be able to use the technology from that to stabilize throttle control

I would play with tuning the suspension a lil bit harder and maybe some limit straps on before putting sway bars and that sorts of stuff on it and it definitely has a miss of sorts from what I could hear. Other than that looks like a whole lotta fun!

Front suspension way too soft and sounds like you have 1 cylinder not firing. Could use a sabilizer bar too, so it wouldnt tilt so much in corders.

front sespension must be harder, rear must be litle softer to do beter jump

Hes totally letting off the throttle as soon as the front wheels go over ramp, which makes the rear wheels slow, and pull the fron right down.

Okay love the channel, but A. never rev a cold engine it does all kinds of bad things to it! B. Get it running correctly before you tear it up. C. get lessons on how to drive a manual transmission! D. you need to tune the suspension not add a roll or sway bar, also limit straps would be a very good idea. E. Jumps should be hit at full throttle and held there until touch down or you will flip it over nose first

That's why i have mentioned making at least 3 mounting points for the back shocks, it can be done to make them straight up for stiffer suspension or an in between for a less stiff ride or were you have it now to rock crawl and just have more cushion while putting trails.

This is an awesome little project and I think a lot of people are not remembering the fact that this is still the test and trial period with it, still a lot of fine tuning to do and I know you’re aware of it all. Freaking awesome to have seen it come so far already and I’m sure the finished product is going to be epic. 👍

You should take it to let the “grind hard” boys abuse it

No jumping skills at all, first you have to get the motor running right so you have instant response when you blurp the throttle at the crest of the jump

The craftsmanship is awesome on this thing. The distance between driver and top bars is a broken neck or crushed skull waiting to happen. 1. Strap helmet; 2. Add restraints; 3. Raise the toll bar to give clearance. That thing is going to be screaming fast when the motor is dialed in and chaos will happen quickly.

Revving the hell out of it when cold will kill the plugs pretty quickly, and free revving it to the limiter is just friggin stupid for anyone to do.

That engine should sound like it's screaming. Also just a tip: make a 4 to 1 exhaust system. Or connect your exhaust, so it's one full system. I'm sure it's not running on all cilinders. You will be surprised how much power that engine can produce

A longer nose tends to make things look more aggressive. The immediate verticality of the front bars kind of makes it look like some sort of bug. Maybe a stinger front bumper would give it a warthog look.

Looking at the vid, it seems to be top heavy in the rear or the roll center is pretty high?

do you have adjusters on those shocks? if so, turn the rebound screw in a bit in the back, it bounces back way to fast from what im seeing

Chris, this buggy is absolutely amazing. The jumping attitude is easily fixed with 2 things. 1 - preload. Look at a side shot of the floor pan when you're sitting in it. It is still raked down in the front. Take a little bit of preload off the rear and add a bunch to the front. You want the buggy to at least sit flat, or even up a half inch to an inch when fully loaded with driver. The second thing is just throttle control. Roll up to the jump slow and then whack the throttle like you're trying to do a wheelie. You dont have to hit it with a ton of speed if you're not comfortable. Go slow and get used to driving the nose up with the throttle. Sway bars will make a huge difference on this buggy for cornering/handling. I really dont think stiffening the shocks will have the result you're looking for. It'll just be bouncy and harsh. That thing looks like it handles the terrain amazing with the spring rates you have. It just needs a little help to stay flat and sway bars make a world of difference while not giving up bump / jump capability. Sway bar thickness will be trial and error but I can tell you that you're going to want to be a little thicker in the rear than the front based on the weight bias of your chassis layout. This thing is so sick man. Awesome job!

Does it have low speed compression adjustment on the shocks? If it does you could slow it down a little to help with the roll in corners. Defs needs the shock dailed in, looks soft as

What’s the best way to stop the body roll on an independent suspension machine? Anti-Roll bars?

I've been working on stuff for a long time. Great video and project. Id love to have it. The way that thing comes and goes on the miss sounds like you have a weak coil or a damaged coil boot. You can crank it and pull them out one at a time slowly and look for spark coming out of the side of the boot or look for a spark that won't jump as far out the end of the coil to the plug while pulling out.

OMG this thing is a BEAST!!! Great job man :) only one little thingy that's bothering me, is that the front is wider than the back but everything else(except the, not all pistons running, thing) is PERFECT!!!

make a heel stop to help steady the throttle and stiffen the front shocks to help on jumps and sway. id lower the seat down and back before raising the roof
