Wow, you really answered my question, I am writing a literature review without knowing how to in text cite the authors already cited by the authors of the journals I am reading. My supervisor hasn’t told me how to do it , she just say I cannot cite them as I have not read the article, I felt like giving up my work. Then I find your channel there I am smiling now. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I have been searching on how to include this coz I felt uncomfortable to cite the reference that I don't read first hand. Because sometimes we never read the original article, but we gain the idea from the background article from some other article.
what happens when there are multiple authors within the citing? For example for Mitrofff, let said there are two or more authors. Do we put "Mitroff et al. and Denton reveal ( as cited by Milliman et al., 2003)?" or How would we do it? I would really appreciate it if, if you could help me out Dr. Kuchinka.
Good question. First, I do not recommend using secondary sources like your Milliman et al. (2003) example. In this example I would find the Denton article and verify the information and then cite Denton. The same for Mitroff et al. In your example, if both articles were cited in Milliman et al., you should discuss what Mitroff et al. (as cited in Milliman et al., 2003) discovered first. Then start a new sentence and discuss what Denton (as cited in Milliman et al., 2003) discussed next. Keeping each source separate avoids confusion.
Quick Question. How can a 2016 paper occur in a 2003 paper? How can the Mitroff and Denton paper which is written in 2016 be available in a 2003 paper? Maybe im mixing things up. I get the underlying principle but im having a hard time understanding this. Would love to hear an explanation.
Hello Paolo. Good questions...if you watch the video closely, you will see the date was also a mistake by the student. The final version that I create is the point of the video. Mitroff and Denton was actually written in 1999 as displayed in the reference list.
Hello Dr Dan, if I have an article that was published in 2022 but has citations from 2003 how can I re cite those old citations in my project in 2022. I don’t know if I explained this well.
Hello Alexandra...ideally you find the 2003 articles or alternative sources of information. Rarely use secondary sources. If you must use the 2003 article information because it is out of print or not available in your language, you mention the author and work in the text but cite the secondary (2022) source. Only list the secondary source in the reference list.
