In this video we are on a roadtrip in Italy. Our main goal failed, but we still have a top secret cold war bunker on the list. We don't know if it works out and how the bunker looks like, but we give it a try. It turns out to be a real timecapsule. Everything is left inside the bunker.
It's the best bunker I've explored so far.

Amazing video, but I have a few strong suggestions to keep you guys safe: 1. Anything of this age with deteriorating equipment and fixtures is certain to have lead and likely asbestos as inhalation hazards. Wear a reusable polymer respirator (3M makes great ones that are fairly cheap) with P100 filter cartridges. Take a look at all the dust in your flashlight beam that's being kicked up from walking around. You REALLY do not want to be breathing that as it contains high concentrations of lead from flaking paint. If you're worried about voice clarity, you could use a PAPR setup, but these are significantly more expensive, bulky, and will likely obstruct your vision. If you can find them, fiber-based N95 masks will also offer protection and won't generate as much vocal distortion, but are much less reusable. 2. For anything subterranean like this, you should carry a mining gas detector. These are more expensive, but can genuinely save your life in the short term (asphyxiation) and long term (radon). EDIT: Looks like you may have one at 22:18. Excellent! 3. (Optional): You should also consider buying some hooded coveralls made of Tyvec so that you can hose them down or dispose of them once you're topside to avoid tracking lead on your clothes into car/suitcase/etc. At minimum, plan to change clothes before getting back in the car, and put the contaminated clothing in an airtight container (garbage bag + duct tape will work) until they can be washed. Love this channel and want you guys to stay safe so I can keep seeing the amazing stuff that you find! Why you should trust me: I have an MS in engineering with 5+ years of post-doc level BSL2+ biology lab work experience

Agreed -- definitely a ton of potential for harmful material in the air / kicked up, from asbestos, lead, mould, to gases from decomposition and poor air quality.

Yes, that bunker is full of asbestos. Some people got the permission to visit the bunker to make a book about it and other similar shelters in the area, they had to wear full protective clothing

I had visited that bunker between La Spezia and Portovenere, and there is even a cooler one, with a massive ww2 artillery cannon inside Palmaria Island, just in front. The whole islands and penisula complex is completely connected, with a maze of tunnel and bunkers, that connect everything many kilometers of underground fortifications all the way to the Arsenal. There was also an undersea tunnel that joins the 2 island with the mainland bases, however it already seemed long collapsed when I tried to explore it in 1997. Tino Island Is still lived in by military, as there are some radar array facilities, you can visit the abbey and the lighthouse on the patron saint day of San Venerio (13 September), the only day you can visit the island (without straying from the main path, even if I did stray a little) The whole area was very strategical developed in a huge military complex during Napoleonic Wars. And the arsenale is one of Italy's 3 top naval Military after Livorno and Taranto. But the whole area is full of Eternit (cement with asbethos fibers in it) when I was studying environmental sciences we tested some of the materials there and we seriously recommend to wear protective gear.

Great !!! you managed to enter! ... I was born and I live in the village (group of houses) above the hill of these galleries and I have never been able to visit them. However, they were already operational in the Second World War, when due to the Anglo-American bombing all the workshops supporting the military arsenal had been moved to the gallery. My grandfather told me that when he passed in front of the entrances along the road there were German and Social Republic (RSI) guards ... and sometimes even SS militias. After the war it was refurbished in accordance with the directives of the Atlantic pact.

Probably the best youtube channel of it's kind. You are clearly not a random guy exploring your neighbourhood. The amount of research, commitment, money and professionalism you put on each mission can hardly go unnoticed. You are also one of the luckiest persons on earth, because you've seen so many rare places, most people can't even imagine. I envy you, because I have the same passion as you, but not the dedication to fulfil it.

Start explore your surroundings! And thanks, that’s true indeed. I don’t follow the “latest trends, famous abandoned spots but try to search them myself. Did you see the video what happened after this explore? There’s a video called “ I got charged for espionage”😅🥹
@goldCrystalhaze
@goldCrystalhaze Год назад
I just saw the "espionage" video. Well, if I may testify my personal opinion, I would say this: the only reason you have been charged, is because accidentally you have exposed a series of systemic corruption evidence. And since law and common sense don't always walk the same path, my "common sense" opinion goes like this: a classified as top secret place will always be a top secret place. That means no Google street view available at such places, no Google earth photos, no articles circulating on the internet, no broken cameras, no unguarded places, etc. Now, there is not a single person in the world that doesn't take a measure (more or less effective) to secure their property or belongings. This bunker was left unguarded and totally unprotected for years. The place begs and welcomes everyone to go inside it, having good or bad intentions in doing so. There just wasn't enough interest and persistence from ordinary people to bother spend some time of their life on an old historical mechanical facility. This is not fun for the uninitiated. So, since the place was literally "an open door" (two boys with backpacks went in easily), it seems quite natural for someone curious enough to want to go in. Simple as that. Most important, you didn't remove any items from the place. You did not vandalise it. You did not hide your actions or your identity. It is crystal clear that this place was a total scrap place. Period. No military space, no weapon storage, no top secret files were found or exposed. The fate of this facility was sealed by the same people that accused you for "espionage", many many years ago, without any intention to use it ever again and for any imaginable purpose. Oh, and the asbestos thing...well, it's not only that. As an engineer, I can recognise the value of machinery, and boy, there were many machines in there that were devalued falsely and on purpose. The government didn't even bother to hire scrap contractors to clean the place and use the spaces again. A toxic-scrap-metal-landfil under the nose of civilians was uncovered, thanks to you, and you got sued. Ultimately, you won in many ways, so you should be happy and proud of yourself. Remember, there are people out there, who recognize the value on things that other people find useless. History, old craftsmanship, human ingenuity and ultimate fate, are subjects that will fascinate people like you and me, so keep up, always think before you act and take care. THANK YOU for the educational videos you provide.

this bunker belonged first to the Italian Royal Navy and then to the Italian Navy. These are support workshops for the naval arsenal of La Spezia. It was built during the Second World War and was involved in stress tests on naval propulsion systems. that's why it is so large compared to other bunkers. when the Anglo-American bombings became heavy, the arsenal moved to the bunker. this is one of many present in every Italian naval base. in the 1950s it was renovated and used until 1992. visiting military areas in Italy, even if abandoned, is considered a crime punishable by prison. it went well for you.

I got charged for possessing state secrets, espionage and entering military grounds.. costed a lot of money😂 I pissed them off apparently because my video showed that funds was not used for asbestos removal. @@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath damn, then it didn't go well for you. I've always thought that if they don't catch you while you're there, nothing will happen afterwards. from the video I thought you managed to get out without being caught by anyone. many years ago a friend of mine snuck into the Lenta army's decommissioned armored vehicle depot. but while he was trying to go out he was caught by 2 soldiers, who arrested him accusing him of espionage, however, in that case he had been caught in the act. what then one thinks, but what kind of espionage, inside there are about 3000 vehicles including m60 armored tanks, leopard 1, m-109, m-116 and other decommissioned stuff that the army no longer uses, so, which enemy country Could it ever be interesting to spy on a warehouse of Cold War vehicles? However, from the papers it emerged that inside the depot there were also Centauro 1 armored vehicles, VTM Puma and Dardo, modern vehicles damaged during the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and in addition, there were 2 old prototypes of the C1 Ariete tank, which and the tank that the army uses today. However, in the end it ended in nothing. and then, in recent years dozens of people have entered that place, it is clear that the army is no longer interested in keeping it protected.

This is an underground engine factory, which were common in Europe during the cold war. Sometimes called "shadow factories", they weren't residential facilities. The idea was that if the well-known surface factories were taken out by sabotage or surgical strikes, essential military and civil manufacturing could continue in the shadow factories. Workers lived in the surrounding suburbs. A useful history is the book "Secret Underground Cities: an Account of Some of Britain's Subterranean Defence, Factory and Storage Sites", which documents some 25 of these installations in the UK. It covers all manners of underground facilities created prior, during and after the Second World War.

I'd be careful exploring underground facilities and abandoned places because I noticed throughout the video, there are fairly new fire extinguishers hung all over the bunker with what appeared to be fresh squares of red paint on the walls. I don't know if this place is totally abandoned or being checked on periodically. There is nothing inside the old bunker to warrant any concern about state secrets in this place. Anything sensitive would have been taken from the bunker when the military abandons the facility. Nothing like that gets left behind.

18:22 Those 5-10 seconds looked a little creepy, as if someone was in the doorway. Most likely just the reflection of light.

Hey Bob at about the 15 min mark you were looking at a bank of Cylinders . Next time you run across Somthing like that you should check the Dates on those . You will find them on the shoulder . It will give you date of manufacture , dates of retest , pressure rating and the type of steel used . Great Explore . Thanks

I took notes on various machines and yeah, it was abandoned around the 80s. The UCIMU Logo used is from around 1950s. Those drill arms are pretty expensive as well...
