Sitting by St Cuthbert’s Way, the pilgrim route from Melrose to Lindisfarne, the church has a wealth of architectural history. It was founded in 1128; part of the north wall is possibly 15th century, the east end is from 1644, cross aisle 1661, the west gable and doorway at west end of north wall 17th century. Repaired in 1794. Major alterations in 1909 by P MacGregor Chalmers. Carved wooden 17th-century laird’s loft for Riddell-Carre family. Burial vaults of Riddell-Carre of Cavers-Carre and Dukes of Roxburghe. Memorials, including one to Lady Grizell Baillie, first Deaconess of the Church of Scotland. Many notable tombstones in graveyard.

This was fascinating! So many people think of cemeteries as scary places, but, really, they aren't. There's so much history in them, so many lives and families represented, and all that most people know about the ones buried in them are the years in which they lived. They were living, breathing human beings who had their own lives, whether short or long or somewhere in between. Even though small spaces aren't my thing, I'd love to be able to get into that crypt to see the pictures at the other end. Here in BC, Canada, we don't have places nearly as old as this, and so stuff like this is of great interest to me, as well as incredible to me how old they are.

Those old letters that look like the letter "F" are an old way of writing the letter "S". So the name that looked like Jamefon is actually Jameson. If an "S" was in the middle of a word they used the "F" way of writing it, but an "S" at the end of a word was written the way we recognise it. Hope that makes sense!
@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo
@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo Год назад
almost correct. Its what we refer to as the long-s. however the short s also sometimes occurs in the middle of a word. Old spelling is quite complex and is very hard to grasp it. Modern day english spelling is more simpler. Indeed the normal s is usually at the end of words and the long s in the middle. But there are exceptions.

@@Regina0964 That's exactly what I would do as a schoolgirl. Just loved to read the headstones and shared their lives for just a moment. Beautifully kept grave yard…and those shrubs so neatly clipped. Someone is doing a good job making it looks so cared for. Thanks Dan for finding another interesting church to show us. Bonus being able to get inside too! I find that moss/lichen so frustrating when trying to read the writing, but it’s a bit of an issue if you start trying to scrape it off and risk doing damage AND upsetting folk!. The “disruptive minister” refers to a big division in 1843 when there were Ministers who broke away from The Church of Scotland to form The Free Church of Scotland. A turbulent time, leaving many ministers who didn’t agree with the old church rules etc, losing their homes, salaries etc, so he must have been one of those ministers who broke away. It’s a bigger story than that and was quite turbulent at the time, Too much to write here . But very interesting. Glad you didn’t really pull that bell chain Dan…it could have resulted in a comedy,either bell falling, or all the folks rushing to the church as the bell used to be sounded to warn of war or some big danger putting the village at risk…would love to have seen you in court defending yourself saying “Well there was this chain hanging down, and I just wanted to see what would happen if I pulled it…,so I did! Your defence counsel rises and says the prisoner is suffering from concussion,and had to have the bell removed from his head by the local fire brigade…,doctors think he will recover with some quiet rest …” Lol take care, stay safe! 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

22:10 - The Disruption of 1843, also known as the Great Disruption, was a schism in 1843 in which 450 evangelical ministers broke away from the Church of Scotland to form the Free Church of Scotland. The main conflict was over whether the Church of Scotland or the British Government had the power to control clerical positions and benefits. The Disruption came at the end of a bitter conflict within the Church of Scotland, and had major effects in the church and upon Scottish civic life. [Wikipedia: Disruption of 1843]

yes and no. they do not just represent death. it is a well known old Christian momento mori symbol. reminding passers by that they also will die and look like the skulls. But foremost the skull and bones is the symbol of Christs Crucifixion and his glorious Ressurection. Christ was crucified on the mount Goltotha (literaly: skull place). If you look at Christian iconography you'll see that on ALL icons of the crucifixion there is a dark cavity under the Cross where we can see the skull and cross bones.

Amazing how many people of the 18.00 died at such an old age 76 and older.

indeed. this has always been like this. even in medieval era. However the silly myth "people died young in he old days" is still very persistant and very hard to root out. It looks like they died youngh.... but it is a flawed miscalculation. as the large number of infant deaths bring down the average age of people. however if one makes it to adulthood they usually life to pretty much the same age as we do.

Sad that grave weathered away but to be fair anyone who knew and loved that person is sadly long dead too , I hope my headstone is still readable in 200 years time after i go lol

The "f" looking letter you see in that "Jamifon" name is the old-fashioned "long s." So it's really just an "s." Jamison. :-) (alternate spelling of "Jameson").
