New Super Mario Bros for the DS actually does tell you that you can play as Luigi at the end of the game. After the credits is a secret code that shows the buttons you need to press next to a silhouette of Luigi's head. Even though you can play as him whenever even during the beginning of the game where it shows Luigi in the opening cutscene instead of Mario.
In mario sunshine if your low on water (or have no water) then jump on the blob enemys (there real name is gooble i found out) then they spawn water bottles its in the game you just almost never need it
Here's something I want to point out. In mario galaxy 2 if you already have 6 hp from a red mushroom if you get another one you will get a 1up instead. And in new super mario bros 2 if you play as Luigi the gold flower will make him silver instead of gold

the water bottles also appear in the Petey Piranha fight in Bianco Hills. "IF" and that's a big If, you end up running low on water, when he vomits up the goop or you jump on the gooble they will drop water bottles.

In super mario bros 3 i actually figured that one out on my own, although i thought it was about the timing, meaning i would make sure i had a full "p-meter" before getting to the end!

Since you hadn't mentioned it in a while I thought you had actually done some homework to find that the handheld NSMB2 on the 3DS is considered the direct sequel to NSMB on the DS. They were sort of like the main line of the sub-series. But here you have multiple sentences making you sound clueless
