Secret Islington Walking Tour - Canonbury
This walk takes into a magical realm just off the hustle and bustle of Upper Street Islington as we take a walking tour around the streets of Canonbury. Ed Glinert described Canonbury as ‘The best preserved and most picturesque suburb in inner London’ (The London Compendium). In The London Nobody Knows, Geoffrey Fletcher wrote that to walk from Upper Street to Canonbury Square is to ‘move into an entirely different world’.

Thank you for such a lovely video. In the sixties I had my Nan and Grandad living at 9 Alwyne Villas and my Nan and Grandad living at 2 Union Square, Islington. Now they have all passed away and I miss them every day. I now live on Hove seafront on the promenade in a Victorian house which I love but do so miss London. Walking through Canonbury Square with my Nan and sister to get to the shops was a heavenly experience. I am now approaching my 81st birthday but I can remember so clearly those days and looking at these videos now brings back such wonderful memories John. Thank you.

I've always thought so too but thought I must just be prejudice since I never heard anyone else comment on it. The strip across from New River between Northampton St and Marquees Tavern always feels to me like its out of Mother Goose or Jane Austen, SO charming.

In the relatively few months since discovering by happy accident, and watching John's excellent videos, I've been entertained, enthralled and educated in equal measure. I cannot help but think (and I realise I may be alone in this) there is a similarity between John and one Bill Bailey, actor, musician, comedian, all round clever bloke. To me both gents have a shared appreciation and interest in social history and nature, wildlife and the environment, and they have a similar and intelligent delivery style. I''d love to see John and Bill on a river walk together. Their shared appreciation of history, wildlife, nature etc would make for compelling viewing.

@@BrianBoru5523 Obviously what you saw in the places along this walk were very different to the things I saw. Perhaps you're harking back to the days of footpads, disease and child exploitation? Oh well, things change I suppose - but I'm pretty sure John will agree with me when I say that, at heart, London remains London. Always has and always will. (And I say that, for what it's worth, as one who used to live in Hackney and Islington many, many years ago and was excited then as now by all its fascinating diversity.)

As a school girl at Barnsbury High all of these streets were my daily haunts. Even before its gentrification Canonbury Square and surrounding streets were a journey back to Georgian London. Those stairs and the slant of the pavement were magical. I can't thank you enough, John for your incredible journeys to the hidden jewels of London and envirnons.

Great video John, back in the 90's I was a postman in Islington and I would have delivered letters to all the houses around Canonbury,love the area it has a rural feel to it,brings back good memories, nice to see you do a bit more of the new river.

Hello John, wow, this takes mo back to 1950's, I lived at Highbury Barn in those days, went to Canonbury Rd school, we always felt that Canonbury was a bit ' posher' than Highbury even then , Highbury was a bit run down in those days, Canonbury seemed to have been spared a lot of the war bombing because most of the georgian houses still survive., Used to the Pied Bull in Cross St to listen to Irish rebel songs....great video John.

The room contained only two easy chairs & Joe had to have a stool all the time. The food was one ham sandwich & the dialogue revolved around it..."

Canonbury Square is the rare example of a made public square remaining beautiful. There are plenty of examples of the opposite. It is for this reason I oppose them all being made public, as you suggest. Thank you as always for a great video!

Thank you, John. Each time I travel to London, I love staying in non-touristy places and trying to be a local. (Usually works until i speak and my Texas accent comes out). My first trip to London I actually stayed in a guest house off of Essex near St Paul’s Rd. I remember Canonbury Square and the New River walk very well. I did not know about the Regents Canal tunnel though. I will need to come back and explore that. Your videos are so informative and educational - like walking with a good friend as they talk about their neighborhood. Thank you for the time you dedicate to doing these.

Thank you John for the upload.It brought back many happy memories of when i worked for Islington council as a gas engineer.We used to hold our union meetings at the union chapel.The marquess estate had a bad reputation then in the 90s.Alas the council made us reduntant and brought in private contractors to replace us.Our old council yard is now Arsenals new football stadium.

I was born above what became my parents shop on Essex Road, they later had the Mace shop opposite 'Colsies'. We played in the beautiful buildings being demolished for the Marquis estate, then we played on the building site. After we moved onto the estate facing the new river, our old house on Essex Road fell down one Sunday night, my picture made the front page of the Islington Gazette.

What an enchanting, tranquil neighbourhood, esp for a south Londoner whose ventures to Islington have tended to be for gigs at the Garage or the Union Chapel. Just as you were explaining the origins of the Tudor tower, I was reminded of some similarity with Harrow. Canonbury is now firmly on my to-walk list. Looking forward to your tales from the Wandle riverbank.

Memories. I used to live close to Canonbury, first in Highbury Barn in some shed-like concrete-mould-monstrosity behind a wine bar, then near Arsenal stadium. Compton Terrace Gardens is a nice patch full of edible plants, and Canonbury Place is just magical durng the early hours after a boozy night out. An underrated aspect of this area and Islington as a whole are the river walks and canal. I managed to get a bit of writing done there, and before I left the Country took a two week job delivering leaflets to doors around the area. Needed the money for the flights. Whilst I may have been a hateful figure, it was a wonderful gig, walking around these parts every day just as summer was nearing. This video brings back a foreboding yearning, because it was the best place I ever lived, but also has embedded memories of my ex-girlfirend. However, I would love to create new ones and since then I am at the position where I could probably get a deposit on a one bedroom basement flat... near the Finsbury Park parts of Islington... Who said dreams can't come true!

Thank you for this tour. I used to work in Canonbury in the mid 1970's at a pharmaceutical company called Biorex Laboratories which went bankrupt shortly after I left. The building (in Canonbury Villas) was eventually bought by Greenpeace and they still occupy it today. The tour of the area brought back many memories.

Yes, The Tower Theatre was using the Tower building for a few decades. When the lease ran out, Islington Council did not renew it & the company have had to find an alternative venue. But they are still functioning !

I was a milkman in Canonbury for United Dairies and know the area you covered so well. My nicest customers amongst many, were Sir James Ross and his wife who lived in John Spencer Square. He and his wife were the epitome of upper class niceness who were always so appreciative of me, unlike some of the jumped up toffee nosed g*ts who also lived in Canonbury!

I should have mentioned that Sir James Ross was the Queen Mother’s surgeon John and I believe he has a plaque at Bart’s hospital in remembrance of his distinguished career. Other noteworthy people who lived in the area at the time included Barbara Castle, Simon Ward, Jim Rosental, Dyson Lovell, Sammy Nelson and my least favourite Noel Dyson for reasons I shall keep to myself. Nearly forgot Gwyneth Strong who was a lovely lady. I don’t live far from Canonbury and a couple of years ago I met Paul Whitehouse in St Mary’s Grove. I walked along with him and he was good enough to do some of his impersonations of football managers and Fast Show characters. A lot of respect for him, even though he’s a Spurs fan!

That takes me back. My first job in 1963 was at a packing case makers in Wharf Rd. I used to get off the 38A bus at Islington Green By the Old Collins Music Hall long closed, and in those days it was Viota Cakes, and walked down St Peters St. The other side of the canal bridge St. Peters St became Wharf Rd. By the bridge was a grotty pub "The Star" where we had our lunchtime beer 1/3d a pint. Since the area became gentrified its been renamed "The Narrowboat." The was a lot of industry in those days including Stafford Allen and British Drug Houses manufacturing chemists, and we made all their packing cases. Long gone now, and turned into trendy apartments. At the top of St Peters St next to the pub was Alfredos Cafe, and moulded into the wall was the legend Ice cream cones 2d. 4d, & 6d possible trade descriptions issue? I think its now that meat shop that you mentioned. The Camden Passage, now all arty farty shops was in those days mostly second hand clothes shops and Gov` Surplus stores. Many of those multi million £ houses were divided up into cheap housing with shared toilets etc. Some of the guy`s I worked with were stuck in there while waiting to be re housed in new estates. A couple went to Harlow New Town.

Loved this John. Me and my wife found an amazing flat to rent in Wallace road for a really cheap price (not sure how - like you said) about 10 years ago and we often just found ourselves doing the exact circuit around Canonbury in the evening to wind down. Just out looking for cats with an ice cream. We still walk down there from Stoke Newington with our kid just to stroll around, there's a real calming air to the place. And I could wind through Canonbury, Barnsbury, caledonian road then kings Cross for an amazingly quiet history-soaked commute to work every day. I always thought Canonbury was the most wealthy and beautiful yet un-pretentious area of London. Hope you ended up in the Island Queen by the looks of it :)

I’m late to the party. So many times I have been jogging around Highbury Fields and yet I’m unaware of Canonbury. Yes it does look like another place from another time. I will jog there next time. Thanks again for the lovely video.

The New River used to flow through those gardens in the middle of Duncan Terrace. That section of the New River Walk in Canonbury is just a pond though. The river finishes up at Woodberry Downs reservoir now.

@@filfvideos I'm not sure about the Cole Brook, but the New River definitely ran down Colebrooke Row. There are lots of clear signs of where it used to run through that final section. I think it was cut short at Woodberry Downs in the 1940s, although my Dad says he remembers the river running through Clissold Park in the 1950s

My partner ironically lives and works in Leyton which you know well and have visited for the last 20 years so I have an affinity with you life story as it mirrors my own, all I can say It's a very small world.

Yes John it is a fact that London's railings were taken away to be melted down for the war effort. Most were returned eventually. I saw a documentary about it all well over 20 years ago! I am loving coming across this 2 year old video of yours. I don't know how I missed it before! Marvellous! That was indeed a stink pipe. There's still quite a few dotted around London. Trying to find them all and putting it in a video would be fun, apart from trying to promote its title! The English tv series of Dirk Gently was fabulous, though the American version was as expected, truly bizarre! They will never understand us English!

A wonderful walk and full of beautiful architecture and history 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍 Those rails were removed during WWII for building tanks…but….they found out that wrought iron and cast iron were unsuitable for converting to high grade armour steel. All over Britain those beautiful Victorian and Edwardian ornate garden railings were removed…and….finally went to low grade scrap…and…not…the war effort 😔 See Peter Watts (17 April 2012), "Secret London: the mystery of London's World War II railings".

Very impressive stuff. I’ve lived in Islington off and on for most of my life and I think one of the sad things has been the degradation of the pubs. The Marquess 20-30 years ago used to be my favourite, a good mix of working class and posh, never an issue. I suspect it will be luxury flatted soon it’s a lovely building and im sure the landlords are licking post COVID lips. The Hope and Anchor has so far not reopened. Hmm. There are still some nice ones though so kids support them!

Nice work John. I spent a lot of my childhood in St Paul’s Rd not too far from there in a very haunted house (that’s another story). Islington certainly has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in London. It has a feeling of antiquity, but with plenty of life, if that makes sense. Cheers for another fantastic video mate.

That was truly wonderful and jam packed with history. I adore those streets and such amazing houses some are fortunate to own. I had many fun times there 30 years ago. Clubbing and raucous pub nights with friends. Always was an eclectic mix of people. I liked a pub called the Edward. Jimmy Somerville Bronski Beat, often called in and was always so friendly and happy.

I fell in love with this area in 1987 when I visited family who still live just down from the Marquees Tavern. I've never been able to explain to anyone how special the area feels. You calling it magical confirmed what I've always felt. BTW behind the Marquess was a glass pyramid house. I assume it's still there.

We used to go to see many Tower Theatre productions in the 1990s and early 2000s at the Canonbury Tower building in Islington. The Tower company were very lucky to have such a brilliant set up for they could rehearse, perform, store costumes and props and provide hot meals, all within the same space. Unfortunately, they lost this brilliant building when their solicitor forget to renew their lease and they had to leave. It took years before they settled in their current location. I don't think the building is used for much now, which is a shame. I am not sure the Tower Theatre would appreciate you calling them a little community theatre as they are very proud of their history and reputation as one of the foremost amateur companies in London!

What a lovely film thank you John . I honestly was shocked but in a pleasant way to see so many beautiful streets and houses in Islington . It really was like stepping into a different world yet so close to the city. I imagined how it must have looked in Canonbury back in the time of gentrification with the streets filled with horses and carriages a real class place then and still classy now. The regents Canal tunnel looks amazing too I need to find out more . Hope you enjoyed your well deserved pint 🍺. 😊👍

absolutely amazing area. beautiful buildings and so they should be for five million. Makes me feel quite meek n mild in my humble abode 220 thousand. I viewed this while eating lunch and every time the scenes made my mouth drop open I shoved some salad in it. lol, Really did love this one John. thank you

Thanks John, lovely walk. Saw many areas I know and many I don’t even though they are really close to the ones I do. By walking along the wonderful New River walk gardens, I had no idea what I’d been missing in Canonbury Park etc. Especially that amazing tower!

Lovely walk, sir! Good to see the Union Chapel, one of my favourite venues (saw 5 Blind Boys Of Alabama there back in the day) & played the good ship Hope & Anchor a few times...also saw a few Beckett plays in the fabulous Kings Head, great pub...here's a nice coincidence...as I began playing this video my 'Sacred River Lea' t shirt arrived! My summer wardrobe thus enhanced...

Back in the 80s I worked at the Almeida Theatre, my cycle ride home to Stokey took me through Canonbury and Willow Bridge Rd, sometimes stopping off at the Marquess for a sneaky pint of Special.

What a lovely video. I lived on Highbury New Park in the 1990s and 2000s and used to walk around Canonbury on Sunday afternoons. There is another blue plaque on a house in Canonbury Park South where the Poet Louis MacNeice lived in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Just one small correction to your narration. It was the Duke of Northumberland not the Earl of Northampton who was Lady Jane Grey's father-in-law.

Wow, I went to Canonbury primary school. Lived directly opposite Union chapel, above my uncles then bookmakers. Happy memories from middle 60’s.
