Used to work for WFNX in Boston in the mid 2000’s and these guys were playing at best music poll at the former Avalon ballroom on landsdowne street. Heard their sound check that morning and knew I had to see their set. One of the best sets I’ve ever seen. Their drummer hits like a cannon in person. The Curtis brothers are phenomenal. I remember buying a very sheepish Brandon Curtis a drink (RIP), and him being confused that anyone would recognize him. We talked for a few, he signed the promo poster they had up at their merch booth and we went our separate ways. I still think about them from time to time, remembering the amazing tone, the immersion they accomplish with sound and lyrics and just how underrated they were. In the 70’s they would have been par with Floyd.
They made some lovely tracks, but these guys had an identity crisis. I was a big fan. They got Alan Moulder and then wrote folk and pop rock songs. I still will never understand the In the round tour. A financial money pit. Should have used the money to buy a jazzmaster and aimed to throw one on the shelf next to loveless.
I saw these guys live in SLC years ago. Still one of the best rock experiences ever. Glad to see Brandon is in Interpol now. I still have never found the definitive reason for Benjamin's departure from the Secret Machines but we all miss him.
I remember seeing them open for Blonde Redhead in some small show in Portland ages ago...they opened with that song and that set the tone for a holy fuck of a fun night!
