Driving north from Chicago takes you to the area known as the North Shore, a string of remarkable, distinctive suburban areas bound together by location and history. While most the area is known for its tree-lined streets, large single-family homes and quaint downtowns, hidden along the way are unusual sights, spots, and stories that will make you think, “Wow, I had no idea that was here!”
We’re excited to be joined by Ellen Shubart, author of “Secret North Shore-Chicago: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure,” for a discussion on her newest book. Ellen will share some of the details within "Secret North Shore-Chicago" in her presentation, including some information on our very own History Center! Journey with us as we explore some of the fascinating micro-histories and old stories from Chicago's North Shore.
Lifelong Chicagoan Ellen Shubart has worked more than two decades as a journalist, as well as serving as a college instructor and city planning advocate. Holding master’s degrees in U.S. history and historic preservation, she has also written the Arcadia Publishing books Glencoe, Illinois and Taylor Street, Chicago’s Little Italy. Ellen now spends her time giving tours of Chicago architecture in collaboration with the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
