Dedicated to the Hindu Sun God Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Once over 200 feet (61 m) high, much of the temple is now in ruins, in particular the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; at one time this rose much higher than the mandapa that remains. The structures and elements that have survived are famed for their intricate artwork, iconography, and themes, including erotic kama and mithuna scenes. Also called the Surya Devalaya, it is a classic illustration of the Odisha style of Architecture or Kalinga Architecture

just imagine the size and look of the original temple which is completely destroyed now and we will never see it again😭. what they got by destroying a master piece. i was just shocked by the size of the entrance of the temple which we are seeing now as konark temple but the original temple must be more than two times of it and that was a huge one.

Why didn’t you explain about the magnet? How a single magnet can float an idol? What’s the science behind that? This temple is a marvel of Indian ancient civil engineering. Another RU-vidr (search for name Praveen) has an interesting explanation about this temple; he explains that this temple is like a Wikipedia…stone carvings at each layer (from bottom to top) is designed for different age groups….

Just returned from puri and konark visit last monday. Blesed to hv had darshan of shri Jagannath. The temple in puri and Konark temple are huge and their architecture is mind blowing. Totally awestruck by their size and history .
