I remember seeing a picture in the SF Chronicle, while LBJ was still President, riding in a white 66 Lincoln sedan on a Texas freeway, it was a distance away, but it was him in the back. Security then was nothing like todays. I think LBJ liked Lincolns, also saw a picture of him herding cattle in a white 66 Lincoln Coupe at the ranch
You raise an interesting question. History is a little murky from 1968 to 1985. As a Cadillac/Lincoln enthusiast, I love to research state limousines. From all the research I did, we know that JFK's car was basically rebuilt after he was killed and 6 months later, was used by LBJ as the official presidential limo. But he and Lady Bird were very uncomfortable riding in it so in 1968 Johnson took delivery of more Lincoln Continental Limousines which were actually 1967 models. We know there was more than one. One is privately owned by a man in South Dakota who acquired it from the Rockefeller Limo stables. This retired agent said it was "owned by President Johnson." So was this one of the cars he used when he was president? I can't find any info on it specifically. I know Nixon used one of the Johnson limos until he took delivery of a new Lincoln in 1972. That car is now in the Nixon Library in California so that accounts for at least THREE that Johnson used. So perhaps, even though he used it as a private citizen, he actually had used it as president as well and is on display at his library as such. I believe when Nixon got his new Lincoln in '72 there was only one. It was modified with each president, the last being in 1980 for Reagan's use. It was the car on scene when he was shot and is now in the Henry Ford Museum but it looks like a 1979 Lincoln because of the modifications.
They were when he was president. This was his personal car he purchased for himself when he left office. Nixon's personal limousine (a stretch Chrysler 5th Avenue if you can believe that) wasn't bulletproof either if I recall correctly.
You could have just said “one of my favorite agents” instead of ranking him third. Talk about damning with faint praise. Seriously? What a asinine comment.
I am in Canada but have always had a keen interest in US history particularly dealing with the 1960's and 70's. I enjoyed your story Bill and thank you for your service.
That was nice. Thank you. I bet you had lots of great memories. LBJ liked having you as his driver. That’s was a great complement. I would of been one of the damn Yankees that got lost on the side streets.
"Where in the hell is that boy going?" haha, vintage LBJ. We don't appreciate Pres. Johnson & Lady Bird as much as we should. What impact and history. I'd really like to visit the LBJ Library some day.
Your privileges are enviable Sir, and I understand how it is to be questioned or second guessed while you're concentrating on giving your riders a safe and uneventful trip. Your patience and presence of mind under such distraction speak well of your integrity and class in your role within a role as a professional driver. 👍🙏
How could you enjoy driving around such a wretched man. Accomplice to an assassination and crook who would have gone to prison with Bobby Baker had he not become President.
