Yeah, I've known about this trick for a long time. One unexpected side effect that might affect some toilets: holding the flapper up longer seems to increase the chances that the chain will kink, thus not permitting the flapper to close completely. If you don't notice this, your toilet could be running for hours trying to refill itself, wasting tons of water.

I've been using this technique for years but for a different reason. Our toilets are 30+ years old with the flapper valve. Oftentimes the chain would kink resulting in a flapper that would not seal and run endlessly. Holding the flush handle down until the tank empties keeps the chain straight and guarantees a good seal. Nice to know there are other benefits.

Thank you for this video! My teenage son has regularly plugged up our 1.6GPF toilet in our house (for years now). So much so, that I've had to remove the toilet and clear the blockages on multiple occasions. I had him watch your video yesterday and then reminded him today to use this method when I heard him walking upstairs. Guess what? We had smooth sailing, no plunger today!!! I came to your channel for the awesome Swardman lawn mowers, but the most applicable video for me has been this toilet video, LOL. Another observation, I am positive I subscribed to your channel earlier this year when you did the review on the Swardman Electra but I just had to hit the subscribe button again today.

If you're flap is dropping too quickly only allowing a small amount of water to go from the tank into the bowl, then your flap needs adjusted. They can be adjusted to allow more water to go into the bowl before it drops down. Usually it's around 75 to 90% of the tanks water volume that gets released into the bowl before the flap drops. In the video it looks like maybe 25% of the water is being released ... thus the flap needs to be adjusted.

If you are a toilet clogger ( as I am ) a great solution is just as you sit down, put your finger lightly over the button, and just as the turd drops, quickly push the button and the water takes the turd away before it jams in the bend. It takes a little practice with the timing but it works a treat once you perfect it !!

Very interesting. I had noticed that holding down the handle seemed to help, but I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it. So what I can do to save water is to; 1: For liquid waste or other liquids, do not hold down the handle. For solids, hold down the handle. Similar to the new two-button flushes on newer toilets. Thanks, great video.

Been doing this for months now in my basement toilet as I found the unflushed portion was starting to smell up the bathroom unless I ran the fan constantly, and hated waiting to double-flush. Just realized while watching this video that while the two upstairs toilets have had some clogs over the past year (wife and two daughters) the basement one has been trouble free for just over a year now except for needing a replacement water inlet valve at the wall. So the toilet was not even at issue.

I've been doing this for years. I do have a question though. I am about ready to replace a 25-year-old toilet and considering one of the dual flush models with the push buttons. Does this technique work with those too? I'm concerned because the newer models use significantly less water than the one I have now. So it would be nice to know that I have some control over how much water is used.

I just as usual came across this video looking for something else. But funny thing is I figured this out about a year ago because I live in the country and get build up in my bowl and tank. I figured it being if I held the stopper up it would fill with more cleaner water and less mineral build up from old water sitting in tank. Besides usink the tablets this seemed to help 😎

I have thought of doing this but my thing is if the toilet is clogged with solid waste adding that much water to the toilet is going to make it over flow, isn't it? I flush with the seat down ever since finding out that flushing with it open creates a microscopic vortex of bacteria and poo particles that spew from the toilet, so I'm not sure, but I'm just afraid I will try this and then everything will overflow.

I'm glad I found this video, this just proves that the regulation for using less water in toilets is meaningless because just think about it for a second, these low flow toilets actually use MORE water than an older 3.5 gallon per flush toilet since you'll end up having to flush a newer toilet multiple times just to get stuff down due to how easily they clog. That's why I always prefer older toilets unless they are in really bad shape, they will perform better 9 times out of 10 compared to an older toilet.

PLEASE HELP: What is the name of the add-on kit? Moved into a new place and replaced the old toilets with brand news ones and the toilets would stop working - I'd flush over a number of days and sometimes they would finally start working for a while. Called plumber who actually had to go into my downstairs neighbor's ceiling and discovered that because of the PVC fitting that was put into the old pipes there's nothing I can do. He said that while that fitting was not up to code, it was the only kind they could use for that configuration. The new toilets don't push through enough water in between uses so things eventually clog up in that fitting. We're not talking about a regular clog you can unstop with a plunger. We're talking about a clog in the pipes that causes both toilets to stop working. Cost me $650 to get those pipes unclogged. He did suggest holding the handle down as shown in the video but I can't take the chance of these pipes clogging up again because, again, plunger does not work and it costs and arm and a leg to get the pipes unclogged. Another plumber told me that there is a kit that will basically make the toilet use more water like the old ones (that's why there wasn't any problem before I moved into the place because the toilets were old.) He is ordering the kit to install but I would like to know the name so I can research it. Sorry this is long but it's a complicated problem.

Best way I found to unclog a toilet drain is not a plunger. Stand on a chair in front of toilet with a 5 gallon Home Depot pail filled with water. Holding pail as high as possible, aim the water directly into drain in bottom of toilet. This large volume of water entering with such force from such a height usually cleans out any clog in 1 to 2 tries. I do it a 3rd time to ensure drain is completely clear, then test flush to see that it flushes quickly and completely on its own. (No more plungers sucking messy poop back into the bowl)

If it's yellow it's mellow... if it's brown flush it down, as shown here.

I trained my family to do this years ago but my problem is when someone comes over and they use the downstairs lav. They plug it every time they download data. What is the device called that does it automatically?

A properly adjusted flush mechanism. If you have the right flapper, and the right length chain, it should lift up and float until the water drops nearly to the bottom. If you have to hold the handle down, something is wrong. Step 1, shorten the chain until it's snug when the flapper is down, then lengthen it 2 links. If that doesn't do it, the flapper might be dirty or scaled up.

Yep, this works, been doing it for years. Quick flush with #1, #2 hold it down....

Hmm, does colored pee work as well as food coloring or must only food coloring be used?

Won't hold it down, may cause an overflow?

Simple solution is go with a 3” flush valve, haven’t had to use a plunger for the last three years since I change both toilets, got sick and tired of the 2 1/4” flush valve flapper. I now get a three second flush with a 3”

Um..........huh.............yeah, if you have to hold the toilet handle down it probably means you have to adjust the chain length. It’s not normal to have to hold a handle that long to do a flush. What happens if you have company, are you gonna tell everybody to hold the handle down every time they use it?

This isn't a trick or lucky coincidence. Modern toilets use Dual Flush mechanisms. You're supposed to use the quick flush for #1, and the long flush for #2. Unfortunately few people know this.

I always on mine hold the handle down after you poop but if just pissed then flush and let go

I am surprised how everyday items differ in the US from those we have in Europe. I've never seen this type of flush. In addition, the entire toilet looks as if it had a different drain design. At least the plunger is the same :)

good advice - however if your #2 is one solid piece you will need multiple flushes and maybe something to break it into pieces

My toilets do this semi regularly because I have large trees with root systems that compromise the main line. Boo. Any tips in this area other than regular visits from the plumber?

Ultimately a new section of pipe will be needed around the root infested areas.
