I was 22 years old when Secretariat ran the Belmont. It was the most spiritual experience I ever had in my life. I swear that I saw God on my TV set pushing Secretariat around the track and I began to cry as did so many others. They must have seen or felt His presence as well because that was what most people did that day. Since then, I have never doubted the existence of God and I have never doubted why He created Secretariat. Not that we might praise Him but that we might praise His creations.
Never tire of watching clips of this magnificent horse running on wings. Were they ever able to breed his sire and dam? It's ok God showed what true perfection is. At least once in our lifetime. I will never forget watching him run tears streaming down my face, totally in awe of how he seemed to effortless eat the ground and finally let us mortals see what he was capable of doing. That in fact he was probably the most perfect horse ever.
AND the PREAKNESS!! Track records for all three races have never been beaten for past 50 years! Preakness clocks were not working correctly but Mrs Chenery and the Racing commission investigated and made correction to Preakness time...Truly God s horse
Joquita...may I share that I m 74 ...we were in the infield that day which was a glorious day and I saw this big red blur screaming past me as I held onto the fence at the far end of the field...Absolutely the most thrilling sight of my life!
I remember telling my father he would take the Kentucky Derby and he pulled away and left them standing it was like he had wings, I knew he would be a triple crown winner. Awesomeness, Beautiful, that was when I was in high school and I will never forget Secretariat!
He just knew he was great. Remember watching him win all three to get the triple crown. It was so great, And what power and strength in every aspect of him.
What a gift. I wish I had been old enough to have seen this magnificent athlete with my own eyes. I was only a child of 5 when this most magnificent horse ran for the world. I've been watching him today at 55 years old because he brought so much joy to millions. There will never be another Secretariat. If you decide to respond back do let me know what that experience brought to your life. He brings me joy to my own life and transcends me to better time in my own life.
I had the honor of meeting this magnificent horse at the Kentucky horse park, his handler was surprised that he did not try to bite me when I went into his stall at the barn of fame, I told him he knew that I would've bit him back! I kissed him on his "velvet", he had soulful eyes, just such a gorgeous boy! my heart broke when he passed away later that year.
i have the grandson of the greatest horse that set hoof on this earth. what a magnificent creation. i also had 2 mares. the darlings of my life. they will always b family. hope 2 visit his grave one day. rip great ones.
Do the math. Belmont record 2:24, which still stands 42 years later. Next fastest winner, 2:26.0, a difference of 2.4 seconds. At a 37 mph average, and a 36 mph last furlong, and given that an average horse 'length' is considered to be 8 ft, Secretariat would have finished 13 lengths in front of the next fastest Belmont winner, and 17 lengths in front of American Pharoah. AMAZING!!
I saw this on TV with my Dad who has long been gone and it is one of my best memories ever, we alway watched the Triple Crown because my birthday is May 6 and the Kentucky Derby falls on that day sometimes so that is how I celebrate my Birthday, plus I simply love horses, Zenyatta for one but I don't think there will ever be another Secretariat ever, He was beautiful and awesome and I loved him, Michele.
The only thing you need to know, he was running 36 mph the first time past the post and 39 mph the last time , he ran each quarter mile faster then the last….I fell in love with this beautiful big red horse at 10 and at 59 i still call him big red.
Watching Roger Federer win his 20th grand slam the most ever for a male I come here to say the Secretariat was the best race horse ever to walk on this planet. That does not mean that he won every race and it does not have to. Just like Roger did not win every tournament but when it mattered....the best came out of both of them. No animal or human is perfect but Secretariat came close to it. He also brought a nation together in a time when that was needed so badly. When I see this horse race I just can't help but tear up. Even the sound of his name...the name is so statley. He could not have been named anything else. THIS PEOPLE WAS A PERFECT STORM..and his mother handed down his big heart of an engine.
he was-is bold rulers son a sire of many a race horse like no other on earth A MAGNIFICENT HORSE THE 1 STUD MUFFIN OF ALL THE AGES DERBY WINNER CHAMPION BIG RED RIP
COVD19 Shut Down Days, here in 2020, meant NO Kentucky Derby in May (been moved to Sept.) The networks filled the allotted space with a showing of the Disney movie & assorted race footage, featuring a whole lot of Secretariat. As a major "Big Red fan", I found it all to be GREAT! Posting Appreciated. Best Wishes to all.
SEC's legacy is NOT built on one race but 6, I REPEAT SIX world-class runs in a SINGLE SEASON as a 3 year old! His Gotham, his 3 TC races, his Marlboro Cup and MOW Stakes were all "off the chart" performances. Take a pill and relax with Easy Goer. NO horse EVER could boast such a resume of supernatural type runs in a single season. SEC ran on dirt & turf & in the mud, crushed 4, 5 & 6 year-old G1 champion race horses as a 3 year-old, & showed both world-class sprinter and stayer capability!
FYI...the MD Racing Commission, after an extensive, including forensic, investigation, adjusted Sec Preakness time to 1:53 flat. As a result, Sec owns all three TC stakes records.
Earle Sande who was the regular rider for Sir Barton (that means his career) said that MOW galloped faster then other horses ran and that MOW was the greatest horse he had ever seen. Willie Knapp who rode Exterminator and Upset said that if he had just moved over an inch that MOW would have run right by him with those 28 foot strides & won the Sanford and that MOW was the greatest horse he had ever seen. Sec fans LOVE to downplay Sir Barton, who won the TC which is so important to you folks.
Agreed! Swaps was a great horse & Bill Nack's choice as the fastest horse he ever saw until Secretariat came along. FYI, the Triple Crown IS the "Holy Grail" of North American racing and there is NOTHING you nor I can do to change that. Horses will forever be judged on theior TC performances & when a horse owns ALL 3 speed records in EACH TC race.....well..what can you possibly state to refute that virtually impossible scenario.
Well, a lot of people I know think Dr Fager was one of the greatest. I don't have a problem with him or his times. More power to him that someone thinks at a mile that Sec could actually be beaten, OMG, imagine that. That is what I am talking about. Giving credit where credit is due and not talking and acting like Sec is the second coming. A lot of great horses have come along and should get the credit they deserve. Also being respectful of MOW and other great horses and what THEY did.
BEAUTIFUL VIDEOS of the world's most famous horse!!! (Hickstead, Bonheur, and Big Ben right there with him). Secretariat was the Ugly Duckling of the horse world back in 1970. A HUGE, ungainly red colt, won on a coin toss. Too many white feet, therefore bad luck. But just didn't he turn out to be Royalty?!?! (Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal as parents!) He broke all records back in the day. Has he been matched since? I don't know, I haven't followed the Triple Crown since him.
Regardless of timed records or track records, the single most important horserace was run for the win of the people, and from the heart of one small horse. He wasn't the biggest, the most intelligent, nor the most beautiful horse--but he showed up. He was Seabiscuit. And he ran a beautiful match race against the biggest, best horse ever--War Admiral in 1938. Seabiscuit won. Secretariat was born 32 years later. A perfect horse in conformation and strength, but not the greatest horse for the people.
+Christine Wilson Idiotspeak....heartwarming nostalgia. Using your argument, Sec would be the people's horse for his unsurpassed TC performances...the first in 25 years, and at a most challenging time for the country.
I'm not arguing the greatness of Man O' War at all. Nor will I debate who was the better horse, because objectively, we have very little footage of Man O' War to judge from, and we have only the statistics to go by that were logged way back in 1919 and 1920. The couple of things I can tell you I know about Man O' War is that he probably should've been an unbeaten horse, and he often carried a lot more weight than his rivals. Just saying Secretariat's 73' Belmont is the measuring stick for all.
1973 was a remarkable year in sports. Not only did Secretariat win the Triple Crown and set track and world records in all three races, but Nolan Ryan won 20 games for the first time in his career (21), while setting a single season record for most strikeouts (383), throwing two no-hitters, 26 complete games, and 4 shutouts. On September 27, Ryan went 11 innings vs. Minnesota and posted 16 K's to top Sandy Koufax's single season strikeout record.
Thank you. Black and white film. There you go. You don't think in decades where there is actually color photos and filming that Sec had advantages MOW didn't. They hardly had film in those days. Only 1 maybe 2 of his races were actually slightly filmed. Photos were black and white. How progression showed itself with color film and all the footage you folks have of Sec.
First, he doesn't hold "ALL THE RECORDS" he broke 6 records and was usually ridden out, Man O' War broke 8 records "under wraps" "speed to spare" and so on. I've owned horses too and Man O' War had a certain something for me. And, I do love Secretariat, I think he's a gorgeous horse but Man O' War fans can say that and we aren't out to knock Sec's achievements just to put nasty fans in their place. Sec fans are threatened by MOW or they wouldn't be so petty about his record. To each his own.
Without getting in to pettiness and arguments which is what Sec fans seem to do, I read lately where Count Fleet's TRAINER said that Count Fleet could "whip Secretariat". His words, don't kill the messenger LOL!
Again I said MOW ran 5 races in a row setting American and Track records and I'm not making this up. So, I am NOT wrong. So, I DO understand that one race does not make a great race horse but you folks are the ones that think the Belmont was the second coming, not me.
Take any of the all time great horses. Man O' War, Citation, Kelso, or Dr.Fager. Or even the all time European great horses like Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, Sea Bird, or Nijinsky. There's no horse on that list that would've gotten to within 10 lengths of Secretariat in that 73' Belmont Stakes. That was God showing off in equine form that day. He was actually the jockey that day and had the reigns. Turcotte just happened to be a passenger along for the ride!!
my great great grandpa watched every man o war race he said " MAN O WAR NEVER WON BY 100 L HE WAS A GOOD RACE HORSE BUT HE WAS NOT REALLY THAT FAST BUT...... SECRETARIAT WAS SOMETHING TO SEE TO THE GREATEST RACE HORSE OF ALL TIME AND MAN O WAR WAS LIKE NUMBER 6" its true
Not dramatics -.FACTS! Who accelerates an entire 1-1/4 mile race???? This has NEVER been documented as happening before or after on the GLOBE...not just in the U.S.A. Who else holds a world record by 9 lengths...I repeat 9 lengths???? Who ran an approximate 22 second extremely sharp 1/4 mile turn "3-wide", passing 5 horses like they were parked, and then "toyed" with one of the planet's fastest horses (Sham) via a hand ride in a 1-3/16 mile race while Sham was being beaten with a stick???
Excuse me but Sir Barton won 4 races going in to that match race and set 2 records while carrying weight, Yellowhand won 11 stakes, On Watch won 9 stakes and beat Exterminator, Blazes won 7 stakes beating Sir Barton, Damask won 7 stakes so these horses are no worse then the likes of an Angle Light or Champagne Charlie, etc. Not to mention MOW broke records by over 3, 7 and 6 seconds, galloping. The most Sec did was 2 2/5 ridden out.
He did beat better horses then MOW but it's the WHOLE picture not just time. Sec never carried weight, conceded a lot of weight, he didn't "gallop" to records, he was ridden out, wore blinkers, lost when he had issues, was not the only horse to beat champions, didn't win 4 races in 5 weeks, shall I go on??? I'm wondering if YOU are blinded by Sec's looks.
Secretariat was amazing. To this day I have never seen a horse stretch his legs so far out. He was a beautiful machine. Much credit to Eddie Sweat who seemed to be with him constantly. This is a very nice video and I really enjoyed it. It's a nice tribute to the greatest horse ever!
I picked Secretariate in the Derby and my dad thought it was funny. I picked Secretariate in the Preakness and my dad thought I was lucky. I picked Secretariate in the Belmont and my dad spent the rest of his life telling everyone how his daughter had picked Secretariate to win the Triple Crown. There will never be a horse with a heart that big, and a desire to run so strong.
Thank you sharing that story:-) People today don't understand the significance of Secretariat...I do:-) His significance can't be measured...because it will only happen once...and it will never happen again. He brought an entire nation to tears...and people who weren't even around in 1973...cry watching it 40 years later. Everything about Secretariat was supernatural...the Belmont made us mortals realize that the perfection we all strive for...happened on June 9, 1973.
I was a little kid in southern Ohio, my grandfather a farmer in Kentucky. My grandparents were up for a visit and my grandfather was SO excited about the upcoming Kentucky Derby, even as an 8 year old I can remember it. We watched the race as it happened and he just kept saying to me, don't take your eyes off the tv this this horse is making history right now and you will remember this forever. He was right.
We always talk about Sec as the horse God sent, which I truly believe he was a special gift from God. It just dawned me the other day as I was looking at pictures of his face, I was thinking how unique his face marking was and then I realized,.... it looks just like an arrow pointing up toward the heavens. Thank you Jesus for such a beautiful creature to inspire us.
I've watched the movie "Secretariat" over & over so many times...I'm at awe with this magnificent creature. God said to him "You're The One" ..and there he went..on wings.
APPRECIATION TO BLACKCLOUDIPOY for this wonderful tribute to THE Greatest Racehorse who ever lived. Secretariat was both pure power and poetry in motion when he ran; a sheer delight to watch. THANK YOU for recognizing his highly competent and dedicated Groom, Mr. Eddie Sweat. Secretariat - A Champion Forever!
Eddie Sweat, who's nickname was Shorty. I believe He is the reason Secretariat was such a Happy Horse. So little respect is given to the Grooms who spend all of their time loving, caring & pampering the horses. Sometimes they even sleep in the stall to keep the horses safe. I will be forever Grateful to Eddie, for taking care of my Favorite Horse. Eddie has since passed away, but take heart knowing he is in Heaven, taking care of Big Red. God Bless You, Eddie!
A spectacular video tribute to this once-in-a- lifetime, matchless horse: a gift from God, indeed. You did an amazing job of bringing this story to life and your choice of music was perfect. God, what a beautiful horse....just to see him, even standing still, takes your breath away.
I read a story recently of a 4-year old boy who died and went to Heaven, then came back to life. He told his dad that Jesus has a horse that only He can ride. Nobody else in Heaven can ride the horse that Jesus rides. I have to believe that the horse that Jesus rides is Secretariat. Beautiful video!!! Sometimes - once in a great while - God smiles down on us all and shows us that perfection CAN be attained. Secretariat is one of those few precious moments.
I am now 55 and remember when this " Tremendous Machine ! " was on the COVER of TIME Mag. He was just as close to " Perfect " as anything, anybody can get ! * I get emotional every time I hear & see the Belmont ( thank you, youtube !! )... and the man says those words and to see the " Supernatural " truly, on CBS, Live " with my wonderful Nana Josie, who told me and my 1st cousins after that performance....." kids ! You will NEVER see anything like this again in your lifetime ! " ( I was just 10 on June 9th, 1973)...*...45 years later, my beautiful Nana was right on the $ with that statement too, as her words echo everyday to me.....*....she said it 1st in the 1970's to me also ..." Those who want RESPECT , give respect ! " ( Tony Soprano says it 30 years down the road !! .....wonderful memories, with tears in my eyes as I write this ....~* GOD BLESS'
God made the perfect horse, and shared him with us. I will never forget where I was, the day of his spectacular Belmont win. His performance still brings tears to my eyes. Rest in peace Big Red, Penny, Lucian, etc. Secretariat will never be forgotten, and I don't think his records will ever be broken.
@@depaola63 And when Turcotte looks back, and sees how far ahead they are from the rest of the field. The perfect picture, for the perfect day and the perfect horse. What a memory!
All horses should be compared to Man O War Secretariat did not match Man O War’s Record secretariat ran more races but lost many more than Man O War was the greatest......
@@r.french4415 You sir are right Man O War was indeed a great horse and won more races that Secretariat,BUT no horse then or since ( and over 2,000,000 horses that have been born since Secretariat died ) have beaten his time in the triple Crown races, and the Belmont may never be broken while any of us are alive to see it. All great horses are compared to Secretariat, because he was the epitome of sport greatness! Look in the dictionary for the word greatness, and you may see Secretariats picture !
Secretariat was an perfect horse. As an ex-competition rider, the power of a horse is a wonderful thing. Secretariat’s power could not be matched. He was beautiful!
For the day he was born, he was a gift from God. Secretariat was one of a kind his heart was two and a half sizes of any other horse. He absolutely loved his fans and loved to run. We were lucky to see him and to know his greatness. Maybe if I can make it to Heaven I would love to see him there. Just the mere thought of being so close to perfection would astound my soul. Thanks so much for doing a great job on your video blackcloudipoy..:)
I was blessed to be a 10 year old boy in1973 & I saw on CBS !!! * I also saw Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra " LIVE " in my lifetime and of course Muhammad Ali too( on ABC, WW of Sports )...Cosell, Monday Night Football....* ! * I am 55 now and love youtube so I can go back in time !! THE BEST of memories ! Pittsburg, Ca. The east bay was a wonderful place to grow up in that era !!
He had 2Xthe size of the heart of a normal horse. He had the confidence like no other. He would overtake the crowd of horses from the outer circle. Which is a longer distance and he would always end up first. He was truly an angel sent by the god.
Such a magnificent animal! Heart, passion and love! What a loving and unique bond with his owner! I am so sorry I never was able to see him in life! Beautiful story! Thank you!
We will never see another Secretariat! He was a fluke of nature in the best possible way, beauty, speed, power, heart, personality? You name it; he had it. Beauty? When nothing needs to be added, taken away, or modified! It will be 50 years in 2023 since he won the triple crown in 1973. He still holds all the triple crown track records, Belmont Stakes will never be broken. Why? Majestic and gift from the heavens. Rest in Peace, big red as you are one of a kind! ✌
