Don’t you just love Penny ? She is so humble and she owned the greatest horse that ever lived !
@laurenurban3942
@laurenurban3942 Год назад
Penny was the perfect owner for the perfect horse. She was not one of these modern era owners who plunk down millions and millions of dollars on horses so they can win classic races. She was the daughter of old school breeding and racing. Secretariat was a product of Penny’s wise decision to send Somethingroyal back to Bold Ruler for a second breeding. She was a true ambassador of the sport.

I miss the simpler times .... Lucien in a 3 piece suit helping cool Secretariat off after he comes in from his track session. Early 70s a great time for mankind!

Thanks so much for this post...great to see even a little behind the scenes look at the great Secretariat...what a physique...just watching him walk you can tell he is a badass horse...I can imagine what the other trainers/jockey's thought when they saw him strutting about in the paddock; Holy Christ we don't stand a chance.

Eddie Maples said that when you saw the blue and white checkered silks, there was nothing that anybody could do:) Eddie Maples was Secretariat's jockey for his last race in Canada.

@@np100 I think that was only the movie character. I recall Penny speaking well of Shams owner.
@laurenurban3942
@laurenurban3942 Год назад
Shams owner should have given sham a break after the Preakness but he wanted sham pushed to the maximum. The same way he wanted all of his horses pushed to the maximum to win. That’s why he had four of his horses break down on the track and die. He was a brutal owner who was obsessed with beating Secretariat and almost killing Sham in the process.

Thanks for the behind the scenes video - has a bit of everyone in it - Sweat, Davis, Laurin, Penny Chenery, etc. I often wonder what he would have accomplished as a 4 & 5 year old when thoroughbreds hit their prime!

So great to see Laurin in there with the sweat scraper, back when big league trainers were a bit more hands on with their charges. I know they worked him in blinkers when they wanted him to get serious. He worked a 1:34+ mile a week or so before the Belmont, and then had a :46 half mile sharpener 3 days out. Wonder which one that was. He did look pretty well in hand over that muddy track, whichever one it was. This was great -- thank you so much for posting.

@lorrainelloyd7750
@lorrainelloyd7750 3 года назад
Of course. They knew that with the competition, such as it was, he could win that way and push their agenda to make him "finally the one" to try and dethrone Man O'Warm Turcotte even said he was going for the record, that's why the horse was riddenn out at the end, to break the record because they wouldn't give them the 1;53 2/5 for the Preakness. And my source, a letter from Turcotte I had.
@johnwalsh3215
@johnwalsh3215 3 года назад
@@lorrainelloyd7750 every horse owner hopes their horse can set a record and by then they knew Secretariat had a real chance at doing that in every race he was in but no one could have dreamed he would destroy the record the way he did! Belmont has been considered by many horse people around the world the most perfect race ever run! Hard to not go along with that!
