This is the Corris series finale! The section of the model railway layout is the slate quarry, and this video will show you how I perfect it.
Thankyou to my supporters from this first series on the channel:
Modelu - www.modelu3d.c...
Small loco works - www.shapeways....
The corris layout from this series will be attending the Corris Railway model railway exhibition 26-27th August 2023 at 'The Plas, Machynlleth, SY208ER'
Cheers

Great job George! I really enjoyed the build series. I'll be over in the UK at the Ffestiniog and Tal-y-llyn in a couple of weeks and I already feel the need for a layout coming on. Not sure if my wife will thank you for that or not ;) A couple of observations. One: Did you think about tilting the layout back a little as you added the slate? Then it wouldn't have slid off so much. I had a similar issues on my 16mm scale sand pit layout. It helped me. Two: More rusty bits of waste against the slate grey, please. It really pops on there. Rusty cables, perhaps a wagon wheel. I just feel like there isn't enough on there right now. Perhaps that's just me though. One last piece of shameless self promotion. Have you seen my e-zine The Micro Model Railway Dispatch? It caters specifically for modellers building layouts in under four square feet. Best of all it's free!

Thankyou, and I hope you have an amazing visit, Wales is a stunning part of the world, and I’m very grateful to live here (mobile signal permitting!) thanks for the comments, I always welcome criticism, so: One: yes I did, and I did try it off camera, but due to the slate falling down, when you put the layout back up, the slate looked like a slate path on its side, so it doesn’t give the correct look. The way forward for future projects will be to not actually use slate, but mimic it with a thinner material. Two: I was conscious not to overdo the scene, but I get your point, and might add a few more bits - I like the idea of a wagon wheel. I did want to add a broken wagon, but didn’t have a spare kit to hand! I’ll add to this scene in the future I think. Three: no, I haven’t, so what is that, and where can I have a look into it? I like the free part!

Hey George - have you seen the new falcon Loco - just arrived at the Corris - yet ? Looks superb even without lining out. I still think it should be called a Hughes- not a Falcon , and not just because of the Welsh connection. I think old Hughesey did great job with the design - and got airbrushed out of history and memory like one of Lenin's best friends ( no offence meant to people who can use an air-brush ) The design wasn't supposed to carry a cab I expect and needed trailing wheels when it got one - but still looks great. Shame the Hughes loco at the Snailbeach didn't survive . . .

Didn't know about Modelu till now, very cool stuff, drooling on the PDF catalog now. When I first started modeling in N scale there was two German brands of figures and that was it. This 3D and resin printing method sure is interesting.
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels Год назад
They scan actual people and details, and aside from the level of detail, the main thing I like it how that makes the figures in scale, no caricature large heads etc

Cheers mate. I picked the slate up from the old quarries at Corris. If you’re not local, you’d need to check a builders merchant or similar!
@ulrichkalber9039
@ulrichkalber9039 Год назад
In a slate quarry i would expect some sort of raw rock face, which could be done by adding a large flat piece of slate. as the scenery is not very large adding little rocks in the sloped area might be done by tilting the scene back until the respective part is horizontal. If this was part of a larger setup this could be built separately so it could still utilise the tilting method
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels Год назад
You could be right, but this is just a snippet, there is alot more to a quarry than slate piles, and I’d never fit it all in. The issue with tipping the layout back is the tipped slate is set at the wrong angle, once it’s brushed off it would be more like a path on its side than a ‘pile’, which is why I had to do it like this. If I was to do it again, I wouldn’t use real slate, as it’s just not the right shape for replicating miniature slate.
@darreno9874

It's a shame there was no actual quarry, the effect of the dumps look great but there is now where for it to come from and no buildings either.
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
That wasn’t the point, the layout is tiny, and still manages to portray space because of the lack of buildings.

its far better than I could do, but I think the slate hill looks abit steep. due to the nature of a slate hill, the gradient would be more mild. especially with a train line running right below. but as I say, far better than I have achieved with my limited patience. I sold my train stuff on as I never even got around to making one building from plastic. I didn't know how to start I suppose. I admire the perseverance of others and there works.

A stunning finale to genuinely one of the most inspiring model projects I've ever seen. You really have a knack for taking the intimidation out of some modelling techniques and showing just how simple it is to achieve a great result. You also have a knack for doing great harm to peoples' wallets when they decide they might as well have a go...! One of my favorite bits about the layout is those figures; ModelU really does seem like a godsend to the hobby. I'm planning to order a few things from them quite soon. A guard and some lamps to staff a brake van and maybe a couple loco crews can't hurt... Can't wait for the next series!
