ALCHEMY
FROM DUST TO GOLD
First stage
Attraction (Talab)
WHAT IS ALCHEMY?
Is Alchemy an illusion? Is it a religion or a kind of philosophy?
Are its symbols signs of sorcery or real formulas?
Why is the transformation of material so important to Alchemists?
Is it all about having gold and becoming rich?
We will try to answer these legitimate questions by referring to some of the most important elements of Alchemy from different cultures and traditions.
At the end, we might still have more questions than answers, but Alchemy is a path, amongst others, to understand and explain the world.
As no one can really claim, until now, to have the definite answers to our existential questions, this mysterious path remains the most fantastic way to see the world and search for the truth.
Alchemy exists in almost all cultures and traditions in the world and depending on the situation, it has been prospering and progressing or has been suppressed and banned by those who saw it as a potential threat for their power or religions.
According to Alchemists, the world is composed of four basic elements:
Air, Water, Earth and Fire, but there is a fifth element called Ether.
Ether (Spirit) is also known as the Quintessence in French.
Each element has two natures and can be transformed to another element due to its common nature. Air is hot and humid, Water is humid and cold, Earth is cold and dry, Fire is dry and hot.
Alchemists believe that the whole world is the manifestation of one and unique divine element.
By finding this element (which theoretically can be found in anything in the world), we will discover the source of the divine knowledge (Philosopher's stone) or the magical potion of eternal life (Elixir of life).
The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus
The Emerald Tablet is a compact and cryptic piece of the Hermetica reputed to contain the secret of the Prima Materia and its transmutation.
«True, without error, certain and most true: What is below is like that which is above; and that which is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of one thing. And as all things were produced by the one word of one Being, so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation. Its father is the sun, its mother the moon; the wind carried it in its belly; nurse is the earth. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. The power is vigorous if it be changed into earth. Thou shalt separate the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross, acting prudently and with judgment. It ascends from the earth to heaven, and descends again to earth, and unites together the powers of things superior and inferior. Thus, you have the glory of the whole world. For this reason, and obscurity will fly away from you. This is the whole of the strength of the strong force; because it conquers every subtle thing and penetrates every solid. Thus, the world was created. Hence were all wonderful adaptations, of which this is the manner. Therefore, am I called Hermes Trismegistus, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole of the world. That which I have said of the operation of the sun. »
One of the most important things we should know about Alchemists’ beliefs is that all beings in the entire world are composed of three principles: Sulfur (Spirit), Mercury (Mind) and Salt (Body).
Some parts of the abovementioned text translated from the Arabic language may refer to these three principles (Sulfur, Mercury, Salt). It is important to separate these three parts to make the salt or the body of the matter ready and purified to receive again the spirit (Light or Ether). Once the matter becomes pure and strait (right or righteous) it will be ready to give birth to the philosopher’s stone.
There are two main ways to obtain the philosopher’s stone: The Dry Way (by fire) and The Humid Way (by liquids).
This operation is also called the Great Art and Its composed of three main cycles: Black Art (the death), White Art (purification) and Red Art (reunification)
The matter should take seven steps before the birth of philosopher’s stone and there is a belief that each step is represented by a color of rainbow and a note of the music.
