Got a guy like him not too far from me. Ok so maybe it’s a little ways away, but…No wheel/tire touches any of my cars/motorcycles without him first working his magic. Unnecessary? Maybe. Flawless? Definitely. And thus… absolutely worth it.
A fascinating and informative interview with a craftsman! Thank you. One teeny tiny nit: The Doctor's comment about engine being mounted in front. Many are "mid" or rear mount, especially sports cars. (I think Porsche are mid engine cars.) That said, he is still correct in aiming for the lowest force balance on the front wheels as they experience the higher forces during braking and turning maneuvers. So his reasoning and strategy is still sound.
You’re right, good pick up! And if you identified the wheels, you’ll know that these are OEM Porsche Turbo twist wheels, going on a rear engine 911. But the “majority” of cars have the engine up front.
Man I need you over at my place to do my wheels right. I’m sorta pedantic with accuracy and how you went about car wheels, it’s sorta like what I do with bicycle wheels trueing.
Rims used to have a dot marking their lightest point or we'd use the valve stem hole if they weren't marked and new tires used to come with a little sticker that marked where their heaviest spot was. And you lined then up when mounting them. It made them way closer to being balanced. Same thing he's doing. I don't know if they don't come with these markers anymore or people just don't know about them now, but I've seen some trucks with mud tires that had weights a nearly a quarter of the way around the rim. No way those tires were anywhere close to being balanced. SMDH
Wonder what level of damage a wheel needs to reach, for the Wheel Doctor to say you are in need of a new wheel? I'm also curious as to what the worst wheel he's worked on looked like.🤔🤔
Well this was super interesting. I fear that a lot of people won’t see this due to the title not being too relevant to what the video is about, and doesn’t make much sense for people not coming from the short.. just a thought.
@thewheeldoctor7097 Hey very awesome information! I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 33” BFGs and King Off-road suspension all around with about a 2.5-3” lift. When I drive between 50-65 mph, I get a small left to right shake in my steering wheel but the ride feels fine. I’ve taken it in for alignment which helps but it seems to come back over time. What do you think I should do? Also are you in the San Diego area? I can come to you if you’re somewhere close by. Let me know please. Thank you!
The Wheel Doctor is in NY. It would be nice if there was a Network of qualified tire and wheel shops across the nation, that we can go to for QUALITY diagnosis and repair, even if we have to pay a little extra. How can I find that list of qualified shops?!?! Anyone?
@petevenuti7355 MAYBE on a standard non road force balancer I do tires and am curious what the machine would say likely would not work but now I'm wondering how you would balance a 2 blade prop a 3 blade might be easier but a 2 blade almost seems impossible using the standard gravity effect.
