World's Most Spectacular Plants Episode 14 of 14
www.spectacularplants.com
Charles Darwin described the Venus's flytrap as "the most wonderful plant in the world".
It is a plant that awes people of all ages and backgrounds.
This deadly carnivorous plant is a true miracle of nature. It can count (its leaves have to be triggered twice to stimulate them to close) and it can catch not only flies but even vertebrates such as small lizards and frogs!
Join Stewart McPherson to discover the secrets of how to grow this amazing plant. While most people kill their first Venus's flytrap, the plant is actually easy to grow once a few basic rules are understood. Discover a range of amazing cultivars that horticulturists have produced, and find out which are best to grow at home!
This is the fourteenth of a series of fourteen "World's Most Spectacular Plants" videos. Visit www.spectacularplants.com to see the rest of the series!

I almost killed my first two Venus fly traps but now I'm getting the hang of it & it has a lot of new growth. So much so I decided to purchase 4 more plants! I have them in a South facing window with direct lighting & that seems to keep them happy, as well as keeping them moist- each morning I put a bit of water in the tray below & it's instantly sucked up. So far I've fed moths, slugs & ants.

Thats good! all of those dont have a hard shell that flytraps can't digest as easily. this includes mealworms and baby cockroach. i dont recommend those but it sounds like your venus flytraps are healthy and happy. i definitely *would* recommend insects such as spiders , waxworms and grasshoppers

@@TimmyKawaiiI fed it a baby cockroach the other day somehow it got inside the house and I said to myself just like on little shop of horrors I started singing “ Looks like plant food to me” It’s growing new traps on top of that. I fed it a beetle once or twice I had to cut it up though. I’m trying to figure how to make the traps bigger.

So wait if there too green that can kill them? I've got them in peat moss soil and I've been giving them distilled water and I've been having them in as much sun light as possible since i got them. Been able to monitor them by keeping them in an aquarium keeping them moist so there leaves don't dry up. And the internet told me feed them once every other week. So I've been following all the research.

May I ask, If a single species can be bred into many forms, how is this process exactly happens?
@VincentGonzalezVeg
@VincentGonzalezVeg 5 лет назад
so the carniverous parts of these plants are leaves, as well as many other carniverous plants the flowers can transfer pollen, and have eggs fertilized by other varietys, expressing the diffrent pheno and genotypes from many generations of inbreeding, and possibly even getting fertilized seeds back to a main parent but that depends of how the genealogy works with this plant
@jewiesnew3786
@jewiesnew3786 5 лет назад
@@VincentGonzalezVeg Does this mean different natural varieties(or forms) already exists in the wild before we found them and we just interbred them? I imagine if a species is very uniform(almost no variations) then breeding new forms would be hard unless you could induce some mutations?
@Sciguy95
@Sciguy95 4 года назад
@@jewiesnew3786 Its done both by interbreeding and by taking and plants that have qualities the breeder is looking to develop. No 2 plants are identical so if you only have 1 variety you can breed that plant and if you want something like bigger traps you look for later generations that seem to be growing more traps that are a little bigger and focusing on that, as you breed it you keep selecting the plants that have the biggest traps and keep breeding only those. After a while the traps will always be bigger. At the same time you can do the same process for color, by looking for plants that seem to show color and only breeding those. Once you have different sizes and colors to work with you can interbreed them in an attempt to get traps with pretty colors and huge traps and any other combination you want. It take alot of time though.
@jewiesnew3786
@jewiesnew3786 4 года назад
@@Sciguy95 must be a very long process to do I guess, imagine a species of a plant that shows almost no variations among individuals, at least in physical aspect, what do breeders do to produce at least a new trait or variation without using modern genetic engineering? does interbreeding makes enough mistakes in their gene to ultimately express these changes in their offspring?
@Sciguy95
@Sciguy95 4 года назад
@@jewiesnew3786 yeah, if your starting out with only 1 single type of plant it can take a long time, but very few plants have almost no diversity. And when I said no 2 plants are the same I meant that you can get diversity just by breeding a single variety since its offspring will never be identical to the parent when you are propagating by seeds. Some plants may get bigger, smaller, show slight variations in color, small variations in leaf shapes, etc. The key is to focus only on breeding the traits you want. A really good example is corn. Look up what corn used to look like and you would be amazed by how much it has been changed through selective breeding from what it used to be when it was wild.
