Not so long ago, I covered the new North Korean Main Battle Tank, basing most of the information on the external parts of the tank, but I had no idea we would get so much revealed so soon. Recently, we got a video from North Korea, showing Kim Jong Un visiting DPRK Academy of Defense Sciences, and we got to see a lot of the internal parts of this new tank, as well as its actual designation...

.... You do realize that the majority of those tanks are painted wood and plastic, right?? Maybe they had a prototype that was metal and had an engine and maybe could drive and shoot a gun but as far as 95% of the features on those and most of the technology, it's totally an utterly fake. It's not real... If it is real, it's decades old at this point and something that they got from China or Russia bootleg that those countries didn't really want or need anymore...

"Why is it called the Chonma-2 when it has nothing in common with the Chonma series" Leopard 2, Super Hornet, and Challenger 2 & 3 all have basically nothing in common with their original ancestor besides the name too. They shared the name, and maybe some superficial characteristics, to make it seem like a cheap and easy upgrade on an existing platform, rather than an entirely new design made almost from scratch, to trick the political leadership into thinking they were getting a good deal by approving it. The political equivalent of saying "$2.99" instead of "$3," kinda. I'd guess the same thing happened with Chonma-2.

I don’t think Kim Jong Un particularly cares about tricking himself. I’d imagine it’s more like how F-35 Lightning II has literally nothing to do with lightning 1. It’s just meant to commemorate the country’s military history. Although he certainly has advisors, Kim controls everything in North Korea, I would be surprised if he didn’t choose the name himself.

Challenger 2 actually has a lot in common with the challenger 1, the entire hull is literally identical and even the turret is also very similar. Even the newest challenger 3 still has many similarities with all the previous Challenger series. To say they have "nothing in common" is totally nonsense. And the Super Hornet is also very similar to the older Hornet, it has only a few changes, but the entire airframe and shape is almost 90% identical.

@militaryanalysis5028 If I recall correctly, neither the Challenger 2 nor the Superhornet were as similar to their prior namesakes as you suggest but that's not the point. Who says the chassis or hull need to be the same to share naming conventions? The Panzer III and Panzer IV were made at the same time to fulfill tactical different roles and despite looking very similar and ultimately, being used in similar ways for both shared many characteristics, actual parts commonality was very small. Nobody seems to complain. Panzer V (the Panther) was also built on a different chassis and had different hull, turret, gun, etc. People fixate on the wrong things... buy one wonders how Red is so certain that two North Korean tanks are barely related. Besides seeing what is slapped on the for propaganda content, we don't really know much and I doubt he is intimately familiar with them.

>we know the DPRK APFSDS is long, but not how long Just wait for Warthunder to put Chonma-2 in game with under-estimated performance, and someone will post the operator's manual in the WT Forums. My guess is conventional steel rod with a short tungsten tip, DPRK is unlikely to have the money for anything more extravagant than that. They might be able to make DU APFSDS due to their nuclear program but it would still cost more. More realistically, maybe someone clever with geometry can estimate the dimensions of the room to work backwards to estimate the size of the APFSDS based on how far up the wall it reaches.

As long as it's nukes can be controlled and used all is well for the PROC and Pm Xi doesn't really like Kim or DPRK that much. I guess PROC sees the alliance as a 1 way beneficiary deal.

Not really, generally each round is loaded into its own little hole inside the ammo box, this is done as another factor to mitigate ammo cook off from enemy fire. The way the panels are placed as well wouldn't make sense either since it kind of looks like they have a wall between them, this wouldn't make sense if these were to be used as blowout panels. My 2 cents that nobody cares about: -Chonma 2 is probably getting its name from the design lineage of using single piece ammo and a manual loader, that's just my guess though. -Just because they're access hatches on the bustle of the turret, it doesn't mean they can't double as blow-off panels. All that blow-off panels functionally are, are slabs of metal that don't allow small caliber gunfire to compromise the ammunition in the bustle, while still being the path of least resistance in an ammo cook-off scenario. If those hatches are still paths of least resistance for an ammo detonation, they do functionally the same work, but also can facilitate the ammo replenishment, which honestly is a clever idea. The real question is whether or not Chonma 2 features blast doors as that's the more important component of the protection equation once any kind of panels or access doors are present. -not only are those single piece ammunition, but they're also semi-caseless ammunition, much like ROK Army's K1A1 or any other Western 120mm smoothbore. It really makes me curious about the dimensions of the shells they use, because it would be funny if they're as different from the Rheinmetal L44 as MG251 on Merkava is. Maybe they intend to use ROK ammo stockpiles in the event of war as they gain ground? I'm not saying that's a realistic expectation, but that's the only idea that seems remotely logical behind the decision and going against just cloning a Russian or Chinese design.

I dont think they are blow out panels They dont look connected to the tank well enough It looks connected like well a storige box
@Galatz_Tirah
@Galatz_Tirah 8 дней назад
@@nikolaideianov5092 blow-out panels don't need to be. The question is if they're directly connected to the ammo storage and if the fighting compartment has the blast doors, separating the crew from the ammo. So long as those conditions are met, ammo detonation will vent away from the fighting compartment. Assuming that's the case, the real question is how much of the ammo is actually in the bustle, because if these hatches are too small, the explosive force of ammo detonation would make significant pressure on the blast doors. Those hatches may be satisfactory, they might not be satisfactory, it is entirely questionable if DPRK designers did any ammo detonation calculations and simulations at all. Seeing the interior of this tank would tell a lot about what's actually correct to think about it, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

@@nikolaideianov5092 quite possible, in which case the question is if the hull storage has blow-off panels, like M1 Abrams does. For all I know I could be entirely wrong and they never even considered ammo detonation as a failure mode they need to account for. All I wanted to point out in the the video is that if those hatches do directly interact with the ammo storage, there's no reason they can't double as blow-off panels. They don't have to be a dedicated piece of technology that serves a singular function.

The thermal sights come from China, an indigenous design based from Chinese and some Russian technology. The engine is an indigenous design based on the MTU diesel engines that China received in the 1980's and 1990's. These are not 100% copies, but indigenous designs that are mostly based on the original foreign product but that utilize components that the North Koreans already have experience and which already have assembly lines for, which is why the engine looks almost identical minus some parts such as the radiator. I'm more surprised and impressed with the wheeled tank destroyer, the tracked mortar or howitzer, and the naval gun turret. Those all seemed like very well fleshed out designs that wouldn't be surprising to see a Western nation produce. I'm not sure, but there also seems to be a model of a tracked SPG that looked similar to a 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV, but due to the angle of the shot, it could have also been the tracked mortar/howitzer taken from an acute angle. Now to the "Cheonma-2". The more you think about it, the more logical it seems that it is a natural progression from the Cheonma to the tank we see today. During the early and late Cheonma modifications, the North Koreans went from cast steel turrets, to composite armor add-ons on top of the cast turret, then to experimenting with mounting ERA. All these steps would logically end in the production and engineering knowledge gained to be able to develop and build a welded turret that contains an internal pocket of composite armor, and then adding ERA to the exterior. Which leads is to the Cheonma-2. You can draw the same straight line of progress when discussing the hull and electronic capabilities of the tank.

most people sadly still dont notice that north korea is actually a pretty big industrial power with a lot of experienced workers, sure, compared to china and the US its nothing, but for its size its pretty great, they also produce multiple military vehicles at the same time, they got a factory for trucks and apc's, they got a factory for their ICBM carriers, they got a factory for their SAM, cruise and guided missile launchers, got a factory for tanks, got a factory for IFV's, and of course the munitions, grenades, small arms, etc, i mean it just makes sense for them to have this industrial capability, they are literally the hermit kingdom and the past 60-70 years of their history have been all about self-reliance and building up their own industry and resources, and make most of, if not everything, themselves for their military, to be completely self reliant and as thus, independent, as thus it doesnt take a bright mind like einstein to figure out that they are a industrially strong nation. i hope people notice it isnt just some shithole nation because in reality it isnt, for what it is, a independent completely self-reliant nation, its doing very very well, just imagine what would happen to lets say, a country of the same size like the netherlands or maybe a bit bigger, britain or france, what would happen if they suddenly got cut off and had to survive on their own, they would face the same issues, if not worse they would have to go thru major industrial build up in order to make everything themselves, then also build up a workforce of intelligent people to become the scientists and researchers to keep up with the rest of the world in development as they cant get foreign technology, and just like north korea the chance they would go into poverty and have food issues are very high if these countries suddenly decided to cut themselves off or be cut off from the rest of the world. and no matter where you look, none of these nations i just named up have been self reliant in well over a thousand years, always surviving on trade, even when ships werent that well developed yet there were caravans from other empires and kingdoms supplying them, japan being one of the few rare cases of being self reliant during that time period, but you can see what happened as result, in the mid 1800s when they made contact with the outside the world saw a japan that was well over 200 years behind in technology and living, a time capsule the size of an entire nation, so its a huge feat north korea, especially in the modern day, is almost completely self reliant and still manages to keep up with modern technology.
