As a former resident of sorn, I do not understand the hype surrounding this village. They have no bus service for the youth, no shop for necessities, no clubs for youths, no events are ever held, they literally have nothing here but a disgustingly overpriced sorn inn and a bowling green (do not get me started on the bowling green, horrible people in there always been the same). Sorn is a nightmare to stay in unless you are over the age of 60. People think because they have a 700 year old castle sitting on a field that it’s a lovely village and a great place to stay… take it from a former resident of 15 years it is a nightmare. If you have any plans to move to sorn, I honestly think you should re consider especially if you have children. The place used to thrive with life, shops, decent pubs, a fuel station, chip shop, football team, stuff for the wains to do… it was a community. Now all sorn has become is a bunch of snobs who think they are better than you and it has been this way for years and years, don’t expect a hello back while passing them in the street either, constantly looking down their noses at people. This is not a hateful comment it is a reality check for anyone thinking this place is appealing in anyway shape or form. If you want to live in a village with absolutely nothing but trees and silence without even as much as a hello back out in the street…then it’s the place for you, however if your normal and need the shop, fuel, a place for your kids to have fun and just a normal life really… then sorn is your last option. Trust me. “Ghost Town” is an understatement, the place is like a prison.
Our house was purchased and demolished to make way for the bowling green back in 1968...best thing my parents did, was getting away from Sorn before the collapse of the mining industry in the 1970/80s! Admittedly, I'd move back there today, might happen, as I approach 60yrs old!
Absolutely! Makes you wonder who was rsponsible for winding up the business. Isn't there an obligation to sell houses off (even at rock bottom prices to individual buyers).
My uncle John Tavern and his wife Anne owned the Sorn Inn for a number of years (at first jointly with another couple) in the 1980s. He was by profession a University lecturer but loved the time he had as a pub/small hotel owner and living in the village until his sadly early death and I must say although my visits and time there where few it was always a joy.
I was with Irene Mercer at the time in the early 1980s Is this Brian? Who use to go about with Irene and me, her cousin?. I played at the Hotel a couple of times with the band I was in. Stayed many times with Irene at the Sorn Inn. Great days!
That wiz the Auchinleck lads getting hame fae the Sorn Inn. If ye had been there a decade or 2 earlier, the sky wid've bin busier when awe the Mauchline, Catrine, Tarbolton, Failford and Cumnock lads were making their way hame efter a swallie when the Sorn Inn was one of only 2 pubs afforded an awe day licence in Scotland. Halcyon days they wur, fond memories. I used tae sit at the bottom o the hilltop in Mauchline in my Landrover when it wiz snawing and gie awe the lads a tow up the brae tae get tae the pub. When I eventually got 'ower the hill' tae Sorn, I never paid fur a pint😂😂 Used tae drink in 'The Greyhound' (noo a hoose) as weel before it shut its doors. Lovely wee place Sorn is, fond memories👍🏻👍🏻
TR-3B...they come down the Garnock Valley, enroute back to Machrihanish...what 'flipped' the Chinook 30yrs ago,but shush, it doesn't officially exist! Seen it myself, along with some of their other weird tech!
Funny you mentioned triangular u.f.o. I saw a blackntriangular shadow of what I think was a if I it was really low casting a shadow over me I first thought why did it get so dark so fast then one of my dogs was looking up to the sky too so he saw something as well I'm just wondering if that's what it was
Just wandered around on google earth. What a lovely village. I'm 70 and I'd move there tomorrow given a chance, Beatifully well kept areas and every house/bungalow looks well looked after. A credit to the residents. A sin those new houses remain empty. The local government should own them and rent them out. Or, keep it 'secret' and preserve it. Great video.
Our family live in Sorn and it’s hardly abandoned, there’s more than 350 population as well, yes it has empty houses but those were never ever occupied and most villagers were against the new builds but they would be better finished and sold to people trying to get on the ladder
Can't buy any decent spices round here. I moved to Catrine (next village) from Leicester a few years back. Love the countryside but I literally have to smuggle spices and whisky over the border whenever I visit the family. The lack of Indian influence here coming from the Midlands was a massive massive culture shock. Going into your local shop and not being able to buy ghee or even just chillis is painful. You can go to Glasgow for Indian stuff but it's like an hour away.
Am I wrong or did SORN used to hold battle re-enactments yearly for several years and get awards for the beautiful garden displays,or am I thinking of another village?🤔🤔🤔
I believe Sorn did get awards for beautiful garden displays. Rightly so too. I can imagine in Summer months being in full bloom. Very scenic. Not sure about the battle re-enactments tho. Thanks for commenting Charlie 👍
@@tvplayer-i1oThe battle re inactments pulled in all the local villages. Straight across the river opposite the castle was the field where it was held. Also had cattle shows, barn dances, every thing good all gone ,the village communities are dead and riddled with drugs, alcohol and violence. The old righteous generation that made the area a great place to live have passed away to the eternal heaven and the new generation so called goodie goodies and wealthy are hypocrisy, vile gossips , watchers like demons , greedy to there rotten core , the entire valley is a pure shit hole. I won't miss any of them as they all have taken the clot shot cos they think there genius but thick as shit and most did not receive the holy spirit like the 27 million did in the UK bcos they never were written in the book of life and never deserved to breath.
I can confirm there was 1 battle reenactment in the 1980s as I was there. Sorn won many awards for there beautiful gardens, which my nana was extremely proud of.
The first 6/7 homes look occupied. The rest must be wrangled up in legal red tape as they could easily be finished. Beautiful riverside setting,if that was the Thames imagine how much they'd be valued?
Be honest those houses are really out of character with the rest of the village. The bungalows that were built on each side of the road over the bridge on the road to Catrine blend in much nicer. These boxes should not have been given planning permission.
Your right. The houses are very different to the rest of the village. Cottage type bungalows would fit in better. Keep with the character of the place. Thanks for commenting 👍
Bland regimented boxes with tiny windows. Some villages and towns no longer have a reason for being there, for example, ex-mining towns, should be cleared and people should be offered housing in places with transport and amenities,
@@LOREandEXPLOREits the same everywhere, houses out of character with the surroundings. Our 2 cow fields in our village now have over 500 houses on them. They dont fit in at all. Plus locals cannot afford them but folks from down south are buying them - hardly a local accent now in our local supermarket.
They Need To Get Another Building Firm In. Bet thete is plenty of Money To be made now, even with the cost of living crisis. No second home owners allowed.😮😮😮.
It’s Reported that a second firm invested 2 million in the construction shortly after. But.. nothing was completed. Not much intel after that. Thanks for commenting 👍
Google streetview drove up Woolmill in 2009 - it looks so nice! Such a shame another company didn't manage to finish off the development. I'm no expert, so this might be a silly question - but if a property is left unfinished for 17 years or so, can it still be fixed up? Or is it considered unsafe and cheaper just to destroy and start again?
I suppose it would depend on who owns the land. Also If the property was deemed unsafe. I’ve seen it so often with older buildings left to decay. But these are different, due to age.. plus so many. One of the news articles published stated that the council can’t take responsibility.
my exprience with the Ayrshire councils is that they are veeeeeeery slow to take over abandoned proprties (see the Station Hotel in Ayr); a shame@@LOREandEXPLORE
The film is based on the many news reports and articles regarding the semi abandoned estate in question. The media termed the name “Ghost Town”. Thanks for commenting. 👍
Hi James. The information in the film is based off news reports and articles that cover the semi abandoned estate that exists in Sorn. The name Ghost Town was termed by the media that covered the story. The Covenanter info is provided by the same Association of Scotland. Nothing is made up, it all exists. Based on source material. Thanks for commenting. 👍
@jamesmorton4443 No anither yin! The fella is referring tae the abandoned scheme and the references tae that scheme in the papers! Try tae keep up tae speed.
I know. They were very upmarket houses based on the initial prices. Maybe just to far out in the country and in such a small place. Thanks for commenting👍
I live a couple of miles from Sorn I am almost certain the reason those houses were stopped was down to drainage I could be wrong but something rings a bell that was the reason... because of the river behind the new houses in winter when the river was high the levels were over flowing and causing drainage and flooding problems which simply couldn't be fixed.....as I say I maybe be wrong but I think that was the reason if not the main reason it was one of them.
What is the point of this video, a few empty houses when the rest of the village is fully occupied. My family have lived in sorn for hundreds of years at brigend and still do, its always been full of life. I find your perception of sorn insulting.
Hi Louise. It’s not my perception of Sorn. As I’ve highlighted earlier. It’s based on sourced news reports and articles. Ghost town and abandoned is what was termed by newspaper reports in relation to the abandoned estate. Which physically exits. Sorry you feel that way. It’s a nice, picturesque village indeed. Thanks for your opinion. 👍
Sunday 4th of August, as England burns, the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier was dropping off hundreds of illegal Immigrants at the Gairloch onto coaches, Labour is actively using the Royal Navy to import the enemy, an act of treachery that everyone needs to know about...my mate literally had to fight security to keep his phone,he has the photos!
Beautiful drone work too by the way. Those houses look absolutely beautiful. No sharing a wall with your neighbours, listening to them scream. I'd kill to live in one of them houses.
What a queer setup! Very surprised the creditors have not sold those houses on Passed through Sorn a few times on a Honda 400four in the summer/autumn of 1979 while working for Shug Kennedy at Tarbolton "Tarbou'tin"
They were abandoned at the time of making. This is a term the media used in many articles in regard to this estate. Which was built 17 years ago and very much left empty and abandoned. It’s backed up with source material. Definitely not click bait. Thanks for commenting.
A company did buy those houses a few years back and although they are still solvent, this doesn't seem to be a priority for them. Shame isn't it. Sorry you got some negative comments, I enjoyed the video, thanks 👍
I am suprised that nobody has picked up these houses; Sorn is a very nice place (went through it on my way to the M6 quite a few times and went for walks there as well). I asume that there are some legal issues about ownership (possibly creditors fighting in the courts). A builder would be able to cmplete these houses for sale quite quickly.
