How did the ancient Greeks build the Acropolis, and what it keeps it standing to this day? Discovery TV for more great clips: ru-vid.com_c... Follow Discovery on Twitter: / discoveryuk
The Parthenon doesn't look like that because it was withered by time, but because people destroyed it. The most damage was probably done by the Venetians and Turks when Athens was under Turkish occupation and the Turks stored gunpowder in the Parthenon that blew up when it got hit by the Venetian besiegers. And in the 19th century the British bribed the Turks so they could loot the remaining Parthenon, sawing off sculptures and marbles, destroying irreplacable cultural heritage in the process, to bring it to Britain. Britain now refuses to return the Parthenon marbles, now renamed Elgin marbles to honour the person who looted this for Britain, claiming that the looting was a creative act and that they are legally bound to not return it to Greece, because according to British law, these Parthenon marbles are now property of the looters and the looters do not want to return the Parthenon marbles back to Greece...
This is absolutely magnificent! While many civilizations at that time were just emerging out of the dirt, Greeks had already built such fortified structures which put even the modern engineers in awe! Simply OUTSTANDING!
*_You should see Persepolis around one or two centuries older than the Parthenon and twice the height. Some modern historians are arguing wether Persian engineers were sent to Greece to build these temples of worship as to show, not only their acceptance but encouragement of different religions and cultures and as a gift to Greece perhaps in order to convince them to join the Persian empire_*
I'm pretty sure there were many other civilization that built structures before the Greece. Where do you think Greece got inspiration for their colums? The Egyptians, etc.
People say we are advanced now ,but look at how many ancient buildings are there that were constructed and designed with no help from super computers and machines that lasted centuries.
All i have to say having been there with my wife is when you are there and looking at it you are just in awe of how massive everything is. Not only is the Acropolis amazing but there are like 30 different temples and squares within walking distance. Hadrians wall was amazing along with hades temple. Man was Greece amazing. Must see for any history lover
@@viktorfaucon533 Oi... My comment was intended to clarify that if you come to Athens and get hassled, as was stated in the initial comment, then it will not be by local Greek people. This is the truth and in my opinion needed to be said. I don't want potential visitors to think Athens is about getting ripped off and scammed by Athenians. Hence my viewpoint. Your reply displays your uneducated ignorance of which nothing positive will come. Your open invitation to this beautiful, troubled, and despite everything, tolerant nation has been revoked.
This would have been a great video if the music/sounds didn’t over power the narrator in key parts. Not sure if that was discovery or the uploading to RU-vid, but if was frustrating!
If women ruled the world there would be no wars. Just a bunch of jealous countries not talking to each other. Hi Do you intend to laugh so hard ? Then search this on google "makemelaugh8282" or "make me laugh 8282"
thats because its the only part where real facts are being taught. basically, they cant cut these pieces even today and when they do manage to, its at a rate of about 1 every 2-3 years. lol
@david edbrooke-coffin no they weren't, I live in Greece and I know better than you. They just paid to get them from the Ottomans back then and of course those Ottomans died when others found out what they did. The marbles were stolen end of discussion.
@The Bushwacker can't believe brits here to defend their ancestors. It's official that Britian has stolen a lot artifacts and also refused to return. Try reading articles on these topics. Famines in India Jallianwala massacre

Note that in this part of the documentary is not being mentioned that the actual reason the Parthenon was erected, wasn't exactly to celebrate Goddess Athena, ruther than to celebrate the victory of free men (Athenians) over an invading army which aimed to enslave them and Greece as a whole. That's what make this building so remarkable. On its frieze (which has been stolen by the British and is being kept in the British Museum to this day) there are depictions of free men, not of Gods and Goddesses.
BRING THE MARBLES BACK HOME! ELGIN STOLED THEM. NO EXCUSE! BRITAIN DO THE RIGHT THING AND HISTORY WILL MENTION YOUR NAME TOGETHER WITH THE GLORY OF THE MARBLES FOREVER. BRING THEM BACK!
@@Headoffury The Parthenon marbles are butchered from the monument which is the greatest symbol of ancient Greece. The symbol is butchered. after all half of the statue complex was butchered and half stayed and it doesn't make sense in parts it is a total scene depicting the war of gods and titans (the surrounding complex, as for the front and back statue complexes it is again scenes depicted) , with half the scene in England and half in Athens it is doesn't even make any sense as it is. And after all it doesn't make any sense when butchered from the building. Even if it cannot know be placed back on the building anymore, at least the statue complex completed again can be placed next to the Parthenon, observing the building, and after an hour or two hours the complete scenes. And after all it is stolen there was never permission from the Ottomans. Also was butchered and very badly treated and cut by Elgin. It has nothing to do with London anyway, London didn't even exist when it was built in Athens.
There was a carved statue of Athena from an tree that the ancient Greeks had no idea where it came from on the Acropolis. Just one of the ancient mysteries. That was one of the reasons they made the Parthenon. If I'm not mistaken, the wooden Athena burned from a lightning strike in the early 7th century bce.
Δῐῑπετής Αθηνά = Diipetes Athena =myth says that the wooden statue flew on the Acropolis from god DIAS her father. This statue was preserved at Erechtheion ,near by Parthenon.
Aliens is the easiest explanation / Truth is hidden from all these propaganda bastards / i have in my hands a very old book with all these methods of transportation / cutting the marbles / lift them with special cranes / i will try to scan the book and create a video
Robert On the Surface/Hearing it for the first time: Yes, but the more you listen to both accents, the more you realize that there are some differences. I love spanish and greek language.
Greek and European Spanish have a very similar set of sounds haha When I was growing up in Athens, I'd often catch snippets of conversation between Spanish tourists and it would take me a second to realise I couldn't actually understand them because they weren't speaking Greek :')
I'm watching it right now on the Science Channel. I came here to watch it without the commercials interrupting every freaking 3 minutes, but all I can find is this 8 minute video.
you mean classical american stuff. The english make great documentaries. The Germans French, Italians, and generally Europeans as well. Americans enjoy the hollywood effects and sound effects and such things these days.
It is a huge difference when you see ancient buildings in Rome and false ancient building in Athene. It's not matter to like or dislike, it comes from the fact that Roman antic building have a long tradition and own history, in this case we have fabricated history from 1830 to nowadays. You can charm people who doesn't know the past but you cannot cheat the people who are educated with the knowledge of the past and knowledge of buildings material. It's so horrible for the person who deals with historical research especially when it recognizes a salt coated marble which is produced over a period of time who determines the age of the building and a marble that is set less than 150 years on soil without foundation. I personally like the ancient buildings who still held the ancient in themselves which are held in the original version but this violent method of rewriting history, NO, anyhow thank you for your advice.
@@seatleon7368 You seem like one of those low IQ folk. The parthenon is far from a 'false' ancient 'building' you troll. Greeks pioneered this type of architecture and it is still being replicated millenias later.
The Parthenon was in very good condition until the Italians blew it up in 1687, which turned the great structure into a pile of ruble. People were robbing the little bits and pieces when Lord Elgin acquired some for the British Museum. The Parthenon was built in about 10 years, and they have been rebuilding it for 300 years. Make work project.
Actually the Italians did not blow it up. The Venetians had barricaded themselves in the Acropolis, besieged by the Ottoman Turks and used the Parthenon as their ammunition dump. It was a Turkish cannon ball that hit the Parthenon and exploded the ammunition within it. The Parthenon was not completed for many decades. The current restoration project is also only a few decades old but progress has been slow for several reasons. 1) The Archaeologists and restoration experts are having to be extra careful not to damage the existing structures. 2) Work is slower as the original architect Phidias employed hundreds of persons for the project. All in all there were thousands of people involved in its construction. 3) Current works have sometimes been stalled as it was hoped the the UK would return the sculptures as it is difficult to reconstruct the building to its original specification without them. May I suggest you fact check?
@@elbmw Fact check is a good idea, indeed. The story about Turks and Venetians is true, but the Turks were inside, and the Venetians outside. Both are to blame: the Turks for storing ammunition in there, and the Venetians for bombarding it. Current works have been going on for over 40 years (not....300, as ziggy2shus wrote). We agree that they are very careful and meticulous -- basically they are putting every possible fragment back in its place. But their progress has nothing to do with the sculptures. Even if they are returned, they will go to the museum. Here is the explosion story: www.historytoday.com/archive/months-past/parthenon-blown
@@AALavdas You are indeed correct regarding the explosion but would it not be better to put them back on the Parthenon? Little point in taking them out of one museum to put them in another, albeit a much nearer one as the argument for their return would be much stronger then.
Your cities and some philosophers are mentioned in our ancient Indian texts, Greece is mentioned by the name of Yavan, Alexander is mentioned as Alekshandra, even the daughter of one of the Greek king in Persia named selucus nicator's daughter married our Indian king named Chandragupta Maurya. Her name was Helena.
The retaining wall beneath the pnyx is supposed to have been another inspiration to develop the akropolis, as it predates it and also dwarfs the building techniques of the rest of it.
If it was not stuck up on that mountain it would of been plundered for every bit of marble for other constructions like all the Roman Buildings all over the Empire , so we are very lucky to have what is there as humanity are so destructive , how could people in the past be so irresponsible with that ancient building is beyond belief , but if you look at Western society today , one half keeps it going while the other half bleed it dry and try and tear it down .
it can be that the Parthenon wasn't the original temple or that there was a previous temple there. Also, if on the Pentelikon marble you use certain chemical substances it can shine again. We do that in older houses where at least one part of the house has this type of marble as flooring. But those chemicals unfortunately they are too corruptive to use on the Akropolis marbles.
Go to Nashville, TN and see the thing fully built with Athena inside. Been there for decades. Will look much better than the Frankenstein-building they are making.
@6:47 Question, what is the animation called when the building blow up into sections? I want to search it on the internet, but I have some trouble about the keyword. Please help
Oh yes, the Parthenon. Could it be that this is not the original structure? It is the one that was created during the Athenian "Golden age" but that hill was sacred for many milleniums before. Some archeologists or some people do have trouble understanding that the locations pre-existed as important in the minds of people. The monuments came after. So below this structure exists the older temple, and below that one it is probable, that one or two more may be found (or what is left of them, if anything is left).
Me to, I will leave Amsterdam for Athens upcoming Saturday. When I look from my whirlpool on the roof, I see the Parthenon. I've seen a lot, but this country is the most beautiful on earth, in all aspects. The best people you've ever met. God bless the Greek citizens!
From the word Νίκη = win . I don't get it. For fun I checked google translator, the first translation is win and the second is nike. Way of hilarious!!!
Athens was named after Athena. The old story is there was a contest between Athena and Posideon for naming rights of the city. Posideon brought the sea to the city and Athena brought the city Olives and Olive trees. The people thought the Olive trees were the better of the two so they named the city after Athena
Phidias used thousands of persons to complete the project. The current restoration is taking a lot longer as I think there are only a few people involved in the project.
They are using the existing pieces found on the ground, not just making new from scratch like the original project. . 100,000 pieces and each one only fits a certain spot. It's a huge puzzle to put back together.
this is greek history and not british why I always must listen how they see and explain my history when thiς was build anyway you not even exist, this is the appreciation of the to the greek's grabing they culture like Lord Elgin did
I found what I believe is an entrance to what ever it is below this I have pictures. It is yet to be discovered. What ever it is that I found might change everything we know about this.
Under Parthenon there is a different temple witch is called pro parthenon and it was unfinished because of the Persian invasion on Athens and acropolis as well so most probable there are the remains of the anthero witch is the top layer of marble that on top of it was everything else
Why people used marbles. Marbles are seasoned silicate usually found under big river lakes over years of water flow. They have a good polishing finish. To assemble them it was a little bit easy and extreme fine art work can be done with clear detailing and finish look. Moreover planters are not much needed as they could cut wedges and stack with extraordinary precision to get a well balanced structure. Usually tall structures are difficult with small stones and plaster. Weather also took less tolls. Ideal heat and temperature maintenance inside. Water storage was easy inside high mountains. Mostly overlooking the place. Water was number one requirements for the city below.
