This tweed Bassman amp once belonged to the bass player for Tennessee Ernie Ford of "Sixteen Tons" fame. According to the current owner, he played this amp in Tennessee's band from 1956 until about 1960 or 1961. This is the 5E6 or 5E6A version of the Bassman with two 5U4 rectifiers, 6L6G or 6L6GB output tubes, two 12AY7 and one 12AX7. This example will get a complete overhaul, including all new Sozo NexGen caps and F&T power caps. At the end, we'll demo it with a Les Paul Jr., a Fender Strat, and a Hofner 500/1 Beatle Bass. This is no Mesa Boogie. This is the ORIGINAL "Dual Rectifier"!

Love the sound of this circuit. Do you like the change in the bypass cap you made to the low end response? I believe my ideal studio amp may be this circuit with a 12 in Jensen in a small combo package. Ever tried that combination? By the way, as an EE having worked on technology from DC to over 100 GHz (defense and such), I am impressed with your practical presentation of information that is very informative and boils down your experience in a succinct and interesting way. Having done the theory, you have improved my practical design and tweaking skills in a very esoteric field of audio that requires a real understanding of the practical application and history of the industry. You distill the the technical and subjective attraction to vintage gear that has collectively evolved for decades. Keep up the good work!

That there is holy grail tone especially given the tasteful, musical and masterful playing of yourself. Just when I'm happy to see my favourite p90 being put to use you whip out a mocha strat that shouts outlaws. Awesome! I wish there was more of a following for dearly departed Mr Thomasson in the UK. Wonderful. Thankyou for brightening my day

NOTE: I forgot to resolve the issue of the 10M feedback resistor.... That resistor was not present in this amp and by the look of the solder at the spot on the board it was supposed to reside according to the layout diagram, it never existed in this example. Even though both the 5E6 and 5E6A schematics show it in the amps, it was never installed in this one. Furthermore, even though this is the earlier 5E6 , it had the 3300 ohm resistor in the bias circuit, like the 5E6A, instead of a 6800 ohm as is shown on the 5E6 schematic. This shows Fender was probably tweaking this circuit through the life of the model.

The fact that you thought to swap the ground switch out for the standby switch made me incredibly happy. I usually scoff at people who insist on keeping vintage components, even if they don't work properly, but that was pretty brilliant, and probably wouldn't have even occurred to me. Much respect for your attention to detail.

FK is November 1956. What a cool ass amp! 18ga stranded blue and brown cloth insulated wire would be correct. GB's or 5881's would be great for guitar, GC's for bass. You probably already know that, I'm a Bassman nerd, if you ever have questions about the 5E6(a)or 5F6(a), I'm always around. Milstap has a great video on the 5F6A differences from the schematic of 59 and 60. I really should watch the whole video before commenting. The GZ34 was released by Mullard in 58. The 5U4 was the best for the application at the time. The Blue Molded caps are great replacements, as are the Jupiter yellows. The Sozo caps are great after 20-30 hours. The PI input cap needs to be .1uf 200v, I don't know why but it sounds better. Charge time? Plate specs? Who knows why. Jupiter makes the yellow type .1uf 200v. Great video, I'm drooling over here!
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 7 лет назад
Thanks for the informed comments. I think to be best for guitar, the 6L6GC needs to be re-biased in the manner I showed. I probably could have popped some 5881 in and they would have been dead on already.

Hey man If you could , what are the differences in sound and features in A 5F4 , 5D8 and the 5E6A ? I wanna get one of these built but I don’t know which to choose from. I’m looking for an amp that can do good cleans for R&B and Blues to edge of break up for more classic rock/60s psychedelic rock sound.

Nice catch! I didn't say. This amp is an earlier 5E6, not the 5E6A, which is the schematic I was using. That 10M resistor for feedback never existed in this example. I checked where the R should have been and the solder had never been touched there either. Thanks for reminding me!

That 10M feedback resistor is an important circuit element; it's not just to make the tone cleaner, it has the effect of creating a virtual-ground summing junction at the tube grid, summing together the two input signals. It would prob work acceptably without it, but mathematically a different function is happening and you'd lose the crosstalk and noise rejection of a virtual ground. This is quite analogous to the same inverting summing amplifier realized with an opamp section, which might be more familiar to some folks. All this sophisticated circuit theory was developed well before transistors!

Hello. I used to own one of 'these, I had to sell it in 2011 for money, still regret it. I bought it used in 1983 from someone in Upper Michigan for $100.00! I replaced original speaker with Bassman Reissue ones in 1991. Handle was always broken off, tweed torn at edges a little, grill cover in good shape and front label still there. Wonderful sounding whether using a Strat or Les Paul, using a Tube Screamer or Chandler Tube Driver. Recorded well and sounded great live. So now I'm "settling" for a 100 watt Marshall half-stack and a 2x12 original Marshall Silver Jubilee 50 watt combo.

Those things really represent a high point of design and quality. If I could only have 2, I'd take one of these, and the other one would be my '56 Princeton. I hear that the "Turn it Down!" Police will soon have a SWAT team. Maybe in the future, they'll have Tweed ear buds. The Karens have conquered the world and turned it into a global HOA.

i would put the micro switch on that 10 meg resistor on feedback circuit, for distort off and clean on. if you use ANY pedals on this amp, i prefer to keep 10 meg resistor on the circuit, it opens up headroom dramatically for the sound!! (no matter pedal is analog or digital) this is not djent music or modern heavymetal amp anyhow... 8)

The tube chart says 5e6 but the layout of the amp does not match the layout and circuit of a 5e6. The amp in the video appears to have the tone stack like a 5f6 and a 5f6a circuit with two .022 caps and a 250pF cap with a slope resistor. I have seen another tweed Fender amp from that era like this. It appears to be a "crossover" circuit with the cathodyne phase inverter from the 5e6/5e6a circuit and the tone stack from the 5f6/5f6a circuit. Compare the close up of the amp guts around 7:26 in the video to the layout of a 5e6 and you will see the differences.

Gotta say, this was a GREAT video. Very well explained with deference to the historic nature of this amp. This is the first time someone explained negative feedback in such a simple and clear way. Thanks for taking the time to make this video, show the schematics and document your process (it is much easier just to do the job without documenting so we really appreciate the time taken to share). Great job... Love my 1992 Bassman 59' Reissue but this 56' is truly a rare and special thing.

Russian mil spec PIO/Teflon/Lavsan and oil caps are dirt cheap HQ NOS types that work very very well in both tube and SS amp designs. They are well worth checking out because of the sound quality and the price. I've gone through the entire line and have been impressed by their solid construction and longevity. The Russians sure did know how to make some great caps among other things.

Hi. First off I subscribed to your channel about a month ago and it has quickly become my favorite channel. This amp sounds incredible especially playing that Gibson with the P90 thru it. On a side note I have an early Marshall JCM2000/DSL100 with an issue which initially brought me to your channel to begin with hoping I could find a solution. I believe you have a couple videos on those particular heads. Took it to a local repair guy here in town and he couldn't fix it. So not sure what to do about it. Not playing out these days so don't really need it just want it working properly. BTW you're an excellent player!!

Thanks so much for the quick reply. The amp actually works and sounds normal but after about 15-20 minutes it starts humming rather loudly. I was hoping it might have just been a tube issue but the guy who looked at said he swapped out all tubes one at a time and it still did it. I could record a short video of it acting up for you if might have a few minutes to look at it. Thanks again!!

You mean the Bell Telephone Labs PA ? All original fender guitar amps derive from Bell Labs PA circuits. I understand that Leo got the Bell circuits modified with better impedance and relatively decent tone stacks for guitar use. My 1954 Champ has a Bell Telephone copyright sticker on the chassis. I sold that in 1979 for $150. I just have no use for the Fender amps.

I just had my 59 Bassman (that I stumbled into!) serviced after nearly 50 years of storage. We went with Sozo blue caps in it as well to replace the Astrons that were leaking badly. They sound amazing - very similar to this beautiful 56. Interesting side note on my 59 - it spent its entire previous playing life (1959 - 1967) as a bass amp. Thanks for the great video!

Great vid!..off topic here but is that a graphite nut and string trees on the 70's Hard-tail Strat? I had one like that for years and sold it to a collector kind of guy 5-10 years ago I can't remember. It would be really cool to see if it migrated into your hands. It's a long shot maybe but it looks like very much like the ole Strat I had. That was a very interesting video on a cool amp. I prefer the greater clarity of the sound with the lower gain V1. The 12AX7 I thought brought on a mushy kind of distortion. Must have been nice bringing an amp of that pedigree back to good robust health! Your hired! Thanks Brad.

So with that speaker basket shorted to the transformer, I wonder if you damaged any of the new caps and/or resistors that you put in, when you fired the thing back up to test it with the bottom pair of speakers connected? Dammit...maybe the tubes got damaged, too. Just one of those things I'd obsess over...maybe components got damaged, partially fried & put out of tolerance. Also, per the schematic, isn't +/- 20% values tolerance kinda crazy-high? I'd figure 10%, max.

Brad, I am just starting to dig through your videos. I'm one of the guys that has a lot of 5F6-A Bassman videos on RU-vid, Millstap. One thing I have noticed with my amp is all of the changes Fender made at the factory that are contrary to the old schematics that are out there. I have a 1959 and 1960 and neither of them match the schematic. The 1960 did however match the newer Bassman Reissue schematic so that tells me Fender has access to all of the schematic iterations and used the one that matches my 1960 to make the best sounding reissue. I have since modded my 1959 to match my 1960 as much as possible. My question is, do you have to rely on the old schematics to put these things back to spec or do you have sources other than the old schematics.

There are several Fender amplifiers like this one that came with 6L6G or 6L6GB outputs. How did they operate these tubes at +410V or +415V back in the day without failing? The 6L6G is only rated for +270V screen and +360V plate. Were they failure-prone before owners upgraded to tubes like the 5881 and 6L6GC?

On page 170 of Tom Wheeler's book "The Soul Of Tone: Celebrating 60 Years of Fender Amps", he states there is a short lived 5D6 Bassman with DL stamped on the tube chart indicating December of '54 with two 5Y3 rectifiers. This predates yours. He also saw another with a Nov.1954 date as well with two 5Y3s.

Looks like GZ34 came around in 54. As far as the input cap, I saw I think it was spice mockup comparing the 320uF of a lot of Marshall circuits to the 25uF of typical Fenders. With same Rs and they were almost exact. I was sort of blown away but it seems past 25 microfarads there's not a lot of signal wants to be processed. I'm of course not talking about today's low B strings and whatever... As an aside a buddy of mine plays a Pro from around that time. I was gigging with him when an acquaintance that worked at Salvation Army brought it in. They offered it to him for $50, as he worked there, and he gave them 200. He brought it to my buddy Jim, (his Friend) and got $800. It was all original, I've been inside it, repairing it and cleaning all the glass out of it when Jim rolled his car. Original Jensen sounds out of this world, the amp is just a winner. I build amps myself and really believe they can be duplicated and sound great it's just parts and voltages... But I'd rather be driving my old Triumph GT6 then my newer Jetta which probably outperforms it in every way. Even with air conditioning and no matchbook cover stuffed between the wind wing & glass.

I have a 56FA form 59. Amazing for guitar. My guess is if the bass pot was not higher than 5 or 6 the MOST clean headroom a bass could get would be having the volume on 2 or maybe 3. That tells me Tennessee Ernie Ford's bass player either played way way low volume -- or he played distorted.

I thought I would love the tone but I didn't for some reason. Maybe the bass was set too high? The Bass guitar sounded great though. One of my favorite sounds from some of the amps guitologist has had on these vids was the Gibson G19RVT's he had. He had 3 on one video and then there was another video where he took out the "couplet" or "tone sucking network" but didn't actually show how he did it on the video...lost on the edit I guess but that particular Gibson G19RVT crestline amp sounded so damn good. I couldn't believe it. My ears like different amps at different times I've noticed. I go through phases with what tones I favor.

Informative video of an overhaul of a relatively basic amp. The Mesa Roadster video had my head spinning. I don't think many would have found that transformer/speaker short. I wish you lived around here. I think that LP Junior (with a P-90?) really works with the Bassman. Spin the volume and voila-crunch or clean. Great playing..

So now you know why the reconer put in the isolated terminals. Its a bad concept to run one of the tinsel wires to the driver basket.. yuk! But what an amazing little amp. I might want to clone it! If I did, I would do a switch on the feedback.

A real nice job on a beauty amp. I prefer my amps (I have about 40) to work right. Not any "mods" but replacement parts and new solder are fine with me. I have a 1946 National amp that has dual rectifiers. Two mighty 6X5 rectos, so not in the same class as the Bassman, but it is a guitar amp. I can't post pictures or I would show it to you. Keep that interesting stuff coming.

BAM! I knew there had to9 be at least one earlier one. No surprise Valco would be in there with an entry. My favorite guitar amp company of all time. In fact, the next vid I got coming up is a Valco National.

I'm at 28 minutes and I'm going to bet a dollar that when you 'fix' those speakers they're not going to work. It looks like somebody punched around with a goblin they couldn't find, and finally in exasperation used non conductive hot glue because of some goofy grounding issue, and just slapped wire on it. If so I'm confident you will find it.

I prefer lower mu preamp tubes in all of my fenders I put an ay7 in V1 of my vintage 1964 Princeton reverb and now I get clean tone all the way up over 6 with an efficient 12 speaker it is now louder than ever and more power amp OD with out pre amp OD...just like this video. The amp literally sings

speaking of those purists who want everything 110% stock. i saw a dude who "recapped" a 60 something twin reverb, and all he did was take out the death cap and left all the bulging and cracking original caps. it sounded so bad and he pointed to them and said the tone is all in the original parts being original....fuck that dude, you do it right the first time and all your jobs come out sounding amazing.

Love how that natural compression from the tubes caress the notes and takes just enough off the high end and leaves the sparkle. No wonder they are sought after....

Hi there. Just discovered your channel. Say, I wanna ask, which kind of amp would you recommend for achieving SRV type tones?
@brianbatie6650
@brianbatie6650 5 лет назад
Somewhat concerned that you would change the bypass cap, using the reason that you would make a bass amp more suitable for guitar. It is a bass amp after all, why choke off the low end? If a bassist bought it thinking it was a Bassman, he might feel cheated by the weaker low end, and the extra distortion from removing the feedback "cleaner" circuit. Not everyone is a fan of distortion/overdrive, more so bassists.

You should have kept the 250Mf in there . the 100Mf will have more bass and take out a bunch of highs. Now here is how to find out witch is witch . Get a speaker hooked up to some music make sure the speaker is full rang now connect the cap to the speaker wire then the cap to the speaker terminal . I use to install car audio and i would use different caps for the mids . Try different size caps and use the - side of the speaker for the cap.

Cool project. the bass amp before they knew how to make bass amps. I mean that with a grain of salt... as they didn't produce much bass with the smaller output Xformer, and an open back cabinet. Speaking of caps... Seeing what F&T and JJ have their caps priced at... WHY is Sprague ATOM 3x more expensive? I didn't get that one.

Boy you had me all excited at first. I'm a huge fan of Speedy West and Jimmy Byrant (I have a video of them on my channel), and as you may know, they played with Ford on Hometown Jamboree. There are 3 or 4 videos of them playing with him on YT. Unfortunately, it was couple of years before this time period (I think 51 thru 54 or something like that), and their bass player had a standup bass. I guess he could still be the same guy though. Maybe he switched to electric later on. You ought to find out what his name was. If he was the same guy who played with Speedy and Jimmy, that would make this amp very special in my book. Wish I could afford it.
@TheGuitologist

Ford had a TV show from 1956-1960 on NBC primetime. So this could have been used on that show. The timeframe is exact for when his bassist would have owned it.

Are all those speakers 8 ohms? If so, in order to keep the cabinet at 8 ohms you'll have to wire two speakers in parallel and then wire the speakers in series to maintain 8 ohms. I have my speakers wired like that. 8 ohms in parallel with 8 ohms = 4 ohms. Then 2 sets of 4 ohms in series = 8 ohms.

Beautiful amp. What volume setting is the demo? Earsplitting? Aren't Standby switches kinda baloney anyway? Also, what purpose do the speaker bells serve? just keep dust out of the magnet?
@TheGuitologist
@TheGuitologist 7 лет назад
Yes. But trying to be as sympathetic to Leo as possible. If I was building one of these from scratch I'd eliminate the Standby from the design.
@silasfatchett5693
@silasfatchett5693 7 лет назад
I believe that this was the first amp to use a DC coupled cathode follower to drive the tone stack. It's possible that the standby switch was included to prevent arcing in the tube at power up, although a neon bulb from grid to cathode would have protected the tube automatically, rather than relying on the user to follow a power up procedure.
@jenniferwhitewolf3784
@jenniferwhitewolf3784 7 лет назад
Silas Fatchett I use cathode followers in my own guitar amp design... on every gain stage. It uses more tubes, but it works incredibly well. I need to find out if this was designed by the great Freddy Tavaris, principal designer od Strat, and most of the 50s~60s amps.. he was Leo’s total right hand man, an incredible musician in his own right as well. Dual rectifiers and cathode follower to drive tone stack is really advanced in the day.
