Had a most excellent adventure in the Glens of Antrim at the hidden clachan [ village]of Galboly on the Garron plateau, steeped in the charm of a bygone era. I spoke to Donnell O'Loan local historian member of The Glens of Antrim Historical Society and editor of the magazine The Glens. A quick phone call and I was talking to Liam Kinney whose mother was born in the village as well as generations of his family all from the clachan and who continues to farm sheep in the heart of the Glens.

The monk who lived there wasn't called Peadar, he was Veder (O'Kane) a Cistercian from Portglenone Monastery and native of Coleraine, who chose to live in isolation there having attended the local boarding school, St MacNissi's, before his recent and untimely passing. He lived for over 40 years in the bungalow directly behind the owner in the clip.

Great video! I am hoping to go for my first wildcamp in the not too distant future (as soon as family/work life allows it). Galboly was on my list but I think I'll have to take it off - or just approach from the Garron plateau and hide up there somewhere!
@Sagewitchevensong
@Sagewitchevensong 3 года назад
It’s obvious we are not welcome by the owner , however as Liams land remains ‘open’ to visitors , I see no reason why you couldn’t hike through the hidden village and head on up top as the intro clip shows walkers heading up , I’d make sure I was well up the plateau as stealthy as possible with your pitch , no open fires and LEAVE NO TRACE . If you don’t mind sharing your camp with the Fae that is 😁😀 thanks for the sub will return the favour ATB

The village was not a 'clochan' as someone in the video said. A clochan is a collection of bee-hive stone houses. I know that a few clochan houses were rectangular but they were still stone from the ground to the top of the roof.
@Sagewitchevensong
@Sagewitchevensong 3 года назад
clachan /ˈklax(ə)n/ Learn to pronounce noun noun: clachan; plural noun: clachans (in Scotland or Northern Ireland) a small village or hamlet.
@Sagewitchevensong
@Sagewitchevensong 3 года назад
A clochán, or beehive hut, is a dry-stone hut with a corbelled roof, commonly associated with the south-western Irish seaboard. The precise construction date of most of these structures is unknown with the buildings belonging to a long-established Celtic tradition, though there is at present no direct evidence to date the surviving examples before c.AD 700".[1] Some associated with religious sites may be pre-Romanesque, he considers most fully intact structures to date after the 12th century or later.[2][3] It is where monks lived.
