my notes: Regional Differences - immigration ○ Huge amount of immigrants, Irish and German, arrived to US seeking new home ○ Settled in cultural enclaves to keep alive languages, religions, cultural customs ○ Often lived in slums - mortality rates high, disease ○ Germans moved west to find land to farm ○ Significant movement, Nativist movement rose up against immigration ○ Nativism - a policy of protecting the interests of native born people against the interests of immigrants ○ Know-Nothing Party - against immigration and catholics § Focused on limiting immigrants' cultural and political influence - Slavery ○ Northern economy was stimulated by free wage laborers working manufactory jobs in factory ○ Population was growing rapidly ○ Southern economy was fueled by slave labor working on agricultural plantations ○ Northern territories did not always disagree about slavery on a moral level but on an economic level § If new territory entered as slave state, free wage laborers could not compete for jobs § Gave rise to free soil party to give white people opportunities - Abolitionists were a minority in North, but were highly influential ○ William Lloyd Garrison - The Liberator, abolitionist newspaper ○ Harriet Beecher Stowe - Uncle Tom's Cabin - depicted brutality and dehumanization in graphic detail ○ Northern readers saw the evil in the south, Southerners were outraged ○ Frederick Douglas, orator ○ Underground Railroad § 10s of thousands of slaves got freedom through network of houses that would provide shelter as they traveled to freedom in the north ○ John Brown - believed only way to get rid of slavery was a slave uprising § Raid at harper's ferry - goal was to steal weapons and start rebellion § No slaves joined, unsuccessful § Southerners saw this as symbolic of all abolitionists - they all wanted a race war where southerners would suffer
