why? Do you think they will actually ask you what port number is used by X application? Or some pcap analysis?

Our hospital just got hacked and was told to call a company they use and to make a payment. They (I’m guessing) did a man in the middle attack on their VoIP system and intercepted a call (hospital called the normal number) but the people said they were taking payments differently now and to send it electronically instead of through the mail. They took around $300,000 and now the FBI is looking into it.

How can you check if these protocols are applied ?
@user-ky2vu1mf5d
@user-ky2vu1mf5d Год назад
one way is to check what ports are in use, other is to use a packet capture to view the structure of frames being transmitted

You say encrypt browser based mail with SSL but I think you mean TLS? It's confusing when you substitute SSL for TLS. I know people commonly do that, but shouldn't you say exactly what you mean for teaching purposes?
@professormesser
@professormesser 2 года назад
Although we almost exclusively use TLS today, we still colloquially refer to it as SSL in normal IT conversation. It's actually uncommon to hear someone refer to TLS as TLS, unless you're having a conversation about something that's unique to the TLS protocol. Generally speaking, either TLS or SSL is an acceptable term, and we all recognize that someone mentioning SSL today is really referencing the TLS protocol. I also specifically mention this in the video when discussing secure web communication.

Alena, Professor Messer has explained this multiple times throughout the series and even in this video. He is saying that the updated term is TLS. So, you may still hear IT people refer to it as SSL, but when you hear that just know that they are talking about TLS.

@@professormesser I read in the SYO-601 book this is because SSL/TLS are too related to NOT refer to them as separate things but i dont know exactly why this is. Do any of your videos explain this in better detail?
