To those asking what model this safe is I believe its Stack On model FS-14-MB-E, its a 14 gun safe usually going for $400 but I guess with some sales, especially Black Friday, you might be able to get it for $300.
Pete, I purchased a StackOn Elite at Gander Mt. last week for a hundred dollars more than what you paid for yours. I am guessing the extra cost was for the door panel and portable hand gun mini vault that came with mine. I placed mine in the master bedroom closet to hold some go-to weapons just in case there is a thump-in-the-night . It houses an IWI Tavor, a Mossberg 500 Cruiser, a Glock 22, and many spare magazines and ammo for all. I will be going Costco to pick up one like yours this week. Great idea to secure the ammo, not only for fire, but for theft as well. Thanks for the info and all the great videos. Keep it up and don't let the J.O.'s get you upset.
Ammo wont really explode in a fire. Yes the powder will ignite and it will cause the round to be pushed out of the shell but with no chamber and barrel for the bullet to build up velocity its not going to do much. Would I want to be close to it when it burns, no way but its not going to be like a bomb.
The main thing is the bullets will not fire off as if they were in a firearm chamber. Some possibility of fragmenting shell casings that could be dangerous if you were very close but mostly would just be loud.
True but then being responsible is what responsible people do. More importantly is keeping ammo out of experimenting children's hands. As a stupid kid that is what I did. Played and made "bombs".
I've had this safe for about a year now. It's prefect for my needs. Weighs about 250 lbs empty as well so it's not something that someone can just pick up and take out of your home. Fits an AR with the stock collapsed but won't fit a full length shotgun. Overall a great buy for the money.
You did a good job organizing the ammo; It looks like you put a bit of time and effort into it. The extra time spent organizing it all makes it look a lot better and you can see where each type is so you don't waste time looking for a specific round.
Even if its full you should still bolt it down. 2 or 3 guys could get that safe on its back. Once you get the safe on its back you can attack the safe door from above with various tools. You have more leverage that way. There are a few videos on youtube that show how even the heaviest safes are vulnerable if flipped on there back.
Another "Just in case" is to get a 5 gallon water jug or 2 and keep it on top of your safe. that way if fire does break out. and melts the plastic you will have a nice 5 gallon flush and puts out any fire within a good distance of the safe.
The one thing people don't think about is... A gun safe can be cheaper to a point... It's locked and, if mounted right, stops people from just walking away with your guns unless they have tools and time, not the case for most home invaders. And most upstairs safes can't be too heavy anyway. HOWEVER... Ammo needs to be in a "real" safe, heavy, fire and sledge hammer proof. It's easy to have more in ammo for a gun than the gun costs it's self. If it is stolen or the house burns and it starts torching off, your done. If you have to make a choice, put your money in a high dollar ammo safe and spend less on the gun safe, not that you shouldn't get the best you can afford. But many people can't have two expensive, commercial grade safes. My ammo safe is 400lbs if it's an ounce and it's not that big, under 5' tall. But it's a tank. My gun safe, is sufficient but not the same quality. I'm on a limited income and do what I can but the most important thing... I HAVE a gun safe and a cheap one is far better than none at all.
Great price and nice size safe for sure. I keep some of mine in a safe Pete but they don't keep the piles of ammo in safes at any Big Box store or even most gun shops. I don't think it's that dangerous from what I can remember from being a fireman 2O years ago and here is what I found from NRA about it. NRA technical expert Julian Hatcher and his team conducted numerous tests. Page 145 of "The NRA Fact Book" states: “When small arms ammunition is burned, cartridge cases may burst open and bits of brass may fly about, but not with any great velocity, and usually not with force enough to be dangerous to life. The bullets generally have even less velocity than the brass cartridge cases, and it is necessary for the powder to be rather strongly confined to develop any velocity in a bullet. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufactures’ Institute (SAMMI) reported a demonstration made by taking a large quantity of metallic cartridges and shotgun shells and burning them in a fire of oil soaked wood. The cartridges and shells exploded from time to time, but there was no general explosion of throwing off of bullets or shot to any distance. … The test showed that small arms ammunition when subjected to fire will not explode simultaneously but piece by piece, and then the material of which the cartridge and shells are composed will usually not fly more than a few feet.” Peace, David
Right on. The pressure inside the barrel causes the bullet to be expelled with high velocity when the powder inside the cartridge burns. So lookout for a chambered gun that catches on fire, but no one's going to die from ammo on the shelf that catches on fire.
Theres a video of SAMMI testing all sorts of ammo in different situations, ammo isnt dangerous unless it can build pressure. So unless the ammo is going off in your palm while making a fist its not what people think it is
I purchased this exact safe, from BJ's, for exactly what you paid for it…I got mine back in November…it is quite heavy for it's size….if I can make a suggestion, every 6 months ( March & September ) I change my smoke detector batteries in my home, and I change the battery for the safe also…put those keys that came with the safe, in a "safe" place…lol…in case that battery dies on you…..also. let me take this opportunity to thank you once again, for all you do…you are entertaining and informative, and it is always a pleasure to spend a few minutes with you, on each video……keep up the great work ! ….. Jim
I guess you've never seen rounds cooking off in a burning vehicle or building. The internet is an amazing thing. Look it up. It happens quite frequently.
Fantastic value! I bought the same unit at BJ's for $329 and three months later they had a $70 instant rebate. Went to the customer service desk and they refunded me the $70...even better. I made a few mods so that it would fit my rifles as well and re-carpeted the whole interior. I did a video on 12/16...check it out.
Excellent video, Pete. I like to stack up 9mm, .45 ACP, GP11 and GP90 as often as I can. On my side of the world, every December, Remington UMC, Geco and few other manufacturers have great sales, so I get large heavy boxes as my Christmas gifts. Lately, I found large quantities of surplus GP11 for my Swiss K31 rifle, purchased from elderly shooters who want to get rid off their ammunition because they cannot target practice no more due to poor health conditions. They are always happy to see younger guys being involved with our fun hobby - the shooting sport. So, it's a win-win situation, they get pay and I get to shoot at a lower cost. On the other hand, I keep my brass as I am planning to reload soon or later.
Nice safe at a great price. I would bolt it to the floor not because someone will take the safe (full of ammo it weighs a LOT) but because if you open the door the safe might fall forward and onto you. No one would want a 500-600 pound safe (that's with the ammo in it) in their lap or on their foot, etc. Maybe it seems solid now but you might take some of the ammo out to use and shift the internal weight just right and that will be "game over". I've seen it happen. I've been watching your videos for about 2 years and I really enjoy them. This is my first post on your site. "Caute"
Sweet safe.. One quick thought though... Check floor below (or basement) to make sure it is not overloaded with all that weight of lead. You may want to add floor support jack right under to ensure no sag and give on floor. Keep the safe.... safe.... along with yourself or those under it.
pete, you might want to think of putting some bracing under the floor in that room. that safe full of ammo and the gun safe are probably really fuckin heavy. maybe a couple screwjacks if your basement isn't finished.
Just letting you know..... That red button on the r/side of the door is the key for anyone to open your safe. You can slide a flat piece of steel in the space between the door and body, press that button to reset the combo then enter a new combo. Easy as that.
That is a good deal! I have a Fort Knox that is not even in my residence as I've been too lazy to move it from one location to my location. So...its a pain but the thing is so heavy I need to hire pros to move it. I like that Stack-On. I do have one but it only holds 6 handguns and its bolted to the floor. I figure once I move then I can hire movers to get my Fort Knox to my new home... but the Stack-On has worked very well and I do think its worth it. Thanks for showing this thing!
They need to sell a storage cabinet/safe specifically for ammo thats large on the inside with enough security that will deter people from messing with it but with the primary feature of having it fire and heat resistant. An actually safe is overkill for ammo storage and some people (not saying who) have no much damn ammo that it doesn't matter how many refrigerator size safes they have, it wont all fit. I have a 56 gun safe I keep my expensive match and self defense ammo in thats 50 inches tall, 44 inches wide and 32 inches deep and I think I can MAYBE fit 6k rounds of .308, 2500 rounds of 7.62X39 and 8k rounds of 5.56, then 1 shelf is dedicated carry ammo with another 4 shelves being all match ammo. It was $799 and I feel it was such overkill and a waste of money. I would be happier with a 10 gauge steel cabinet lines with 3/4" drywall to keep it fire resistant.
You got a heck of a deal Pete, good job bro! That is one sweet safe, I need to do the same thing. I can't get all of my ammo in my gun safe, thanks for the idea! I'm looking for one right now.
Hey Pete. Great channel. Long time sub. I just wanted to pass this along on your safe. I was searching safe's on youtube. Found a safe simular to yours. These safe's can be broken into very easy. The red button on the inside of the door you can access with a small piece if metal from the outside door jam. After you press this you are then able to enter a new code on the key pad, and the door will open. Just wanting to pass along from one gun owner to another.Kelly Alwood has a video.
As a firefighter in your town and a range visitor I thank you for fire proofing all that ammo and I can assure you we will be there in under 5 mins haha see you at double action
To keep all the ammo that I have on hand I'd need 30 of those safes. At some point some ammo will need to be out in the open it just doesn't make sense to me to have a safe just for ammo but it's a free country. That is a nice safe for the $$ though.
Didn't check the comments to see if this has been mentioned but it's my understanding that storing ammo for long periods of time in the factory cardboard boxes causes them to collect humidity and thus promote corrosion of the rounds. Are you still storing them like this? Any issues as a result?
After seeing your collection of .22LR ammo, I really hate you now!! Lol, finding .22LR ammo is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Great safe at a good price!!!
They had it at the range where Pete works for quite some time. Was not Walmart priced, but I would buy a box or two every time I visited. I love CCI. The range has not had any 22 either for about two months now.
smilemoney - I live out here in California & MAN .22LR is hard to find. I get lucky sometimes but the stores I buy them from have a 3 limit per customer
I lived in a house that burned. A box of 38 was in there in a dresser that burned to the ground. The box burned off the ammo and not a single one went off. I remember being afraid to even pick them up later.
Damn that looks like a perfect size for ammo. I have a "large" stack on safe that only manages to hold one brand of one caliber target ammo and the hollow points for that caliber. Nevermind the other 45 target ammo, the 22lr 22tcm 9mm 10mm 38 357 mag and 44 mag. Thanks for sharing that I'm going to pick one up.
get rid of the electronic keypad and get a mechanical lock. that electronic gizmo gets zapped by static the right way and you will have a 300-pound paperweight that you won't be able to open without a $250 locksmith donation
I can attest that this safe is unmovable when full to capacity you would need some sort of hydraulic assistance that has the ability to pick it up from the sides good luck on that lol
great deal for a quality safe.thousand rounds is great for some one who shoots once a month but it's not that much.I like in CA. ammo is very hard to find .I have to pretty much depend on the I internet.
My purpose I think is the same as yours. Not to worried about some Yahoo stealing my ammo, but more about Safe storage.$299.00 is good price, but what was the delivery cost for the safe?
Love the video but, when you put that much ammo in a secure safe....the only thing you have in a really bad fire is a giant pressure cooker bomb! Much safer keeping the ammo in a breathable secure storage unit...after 1400farenheight you can say goodbye to anyone in that vicinity!
I am still young but one thing I have really had to learn and continue to learn is to stop pushing my way of things on other people, if thats how they want it than let it be. If they like Glock and I don't than oh well, if they like 40caliber and I prefer 9mm and they shoot well with it than let them be happy with it. If its something that needs to be brought up or if their was like a huge problem he was missing about his safe than feel free to tell him but besides that let the man do it how he wants! Lol
Good Morning Pete, you got an update on this safe? I was thinking of using Christmas money and bonus money from work to buy myself this safe for my ammo and a few valuables I want to lock up. How'd it hold up over time? I even checked my local BJ's and they have it for $350 at the moment. Not Bad! Thanks for all the videos man Have a Happy New Year and hope to hear back from you.
I can't fit half my guns in my 2 safes. If I tried to fit my ammo, reloading gunpowder, and primers in a safe, I'd need one of those deluxe Cannon deals. I really can't see a conventional thief lugging hundreds of lbs of ammo. I'd love to see Tashawn or Leroy trying to climb out my window with a stack of 54r spam cans. Lol.
New to your channel, some nice posts. My question on this ammo safe is this, I have found the shelves on these safes start sagging from the weight of my handguns. How is it holding the weight of all that ammo without starting to sag. I have ALOT of ammo, and have started boxing the ammo in the large plastic dry boxes (with "O" ring seals) for easy access, instead of having cases piled one on top of another. That safe of yours won't go anywhere. I a 450lb sentry for some of my long guns. I lined the floor with 6 cases of 9mm., Not bolted, not going anywhere. P.S. don't forget to put a portable rechargeable moisture removing unit in there.
theARMORYchannel That doesn't matter because the solid welded lugs on the side of the door keep the safe locked, not the hinged themselves. Having the hinges on the outside is better, leaves more room on inside and makes the door removable for easier moving. So if you removed the hinges the door would not open unless you cut the lugs off.
christian7750 Doesn't change the fact that the thief will definitely attempt to hammer the hinges, leaving you with a safe that doesn't function correctly.
Here's your security you can even view it remotely via smartphone iPod tablets all live. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/736019-REG/EverFocus_ECOR264_16X1_2T_ECOR264X1_Network_DVR_with.html
People get way too carried away with do this do it can be broken into it can be hauled off, he's obviously not that worried about it. If they manage to get to the safe without being shot and they manage to get away with it than oh well its just ammo it can be replaced, its not the last ammo on earth.
Damn Pete people are giving you a bunch of shit today! I keep most of my ammo in a safe as well and that is a nice stock of mini mags you got. I can't find them anywhere in NC
My Winchester Series 20 (60x20x18) was on sale at Bass Pro for $399 plus cost to deliver. Hate the combo lock big pain to open, so I want to replace it with an easy digital one (+$300).
