Here in the states you will probably lose your job for going after a person committing theft. It's a safety and liability issue especially if the employee gets hurt on store property. As a former manager, we had undercover security for that reason who are trained and hired to handle the situation. We told the employees to let them go and the authorities will handle it. The merchandise is NEVER that important.

I built a switch on my front porch when a package is lifted up to be stolen . My baby Damien my 95 pound Pitbulls doggy door slides open releasing him , I have to say it's worked beautifully very , very effective . So far I've found 2 book bags 1 pair of overalls and a hat .

I grew up in Great Falls Montana in the 60's and 70's and we used to use the word "nicked" to refer to stealing and I have never heard it again until today. I had no idea we stole that from the British.

We were feeding a neighbor's cat while they were away for the weekend years ago. Normally, one of us walked up two houses and did the job, but this particular day, I was on my way to a meeting at church so my husband drove me up the hill to feed the cat before the meeting. After I fed the cat, the key was stuck in the lock and I hollered to my hubs who was sitting in our pickup with the motor running, "Help!" so he put the truck in neutral on seemingly level ground and came over to help. I looked up, so the truck begin to roll backwards and told him. He said, "Well, go get it!" So I did. By the time I got to the truck, it was moving pretty quickly. He'd left the door open and it knocked me down before I could get in or reach the brake. The truck's left front tire passed over me from my left thigh to my right shoulder. Took out two other neighbors mailboxes and eventually, at the third nieghbor's mailbox, ripped the door off the truck and stopped. We got to the hospital with the aid of another neighbor in whose ditch I'd ended up. They kept me for three days to be sure I had no internal bleeding. My only broken bone was my right index finger although I had deep bruising on my thigh for about 6 months. Ribs were quite sore for a good 10 weeks. The sister-in-law of the surgeon they called in to be on hand if I required surgery had lost her life doing exactly the same thing a year before. He said to me, "People don't live through this!" I think of it every time I see a video with a car rolling backwards.

I would guess that most of the cars that are taking off after the person gets out (in the clips from the US) is because they are not putting it in park. In the US the majority of cars are automatic, as long as you put it in park the car should not roll. Unless your on a major incline, but even then the chances of the car rolling are slim.

The thing is you aren’t actually being watched by anyone everywhere you go. If you commit a crime they can pull up the footage but people aren’t just sitting there watching the cameras all day.

As someone who works in retail here in the UK, and has done throughout the entire pandemic, the shoplifting has been so crazy. I've had someone pull a handful of use Heroin needles out of their pocket and swipe at me with them for trying to stop them, I've had people try to bottle me, I've had a knife pulled on me, there was one guy recently where I'd had enough and after he threatened to stab me I floored him and we chucked him out, even he ended up coming back with 5 of his mates and kicking off until we had to get the police involved. It really isn't an easy job, especially when I'm expected to stop them so that the bottom line isn't affected and the chain owners and investors keep getting their insane pay and I have to struggle along at minimum wage despite being on the front line fighting people over a couple of bottles of wine. It's fucking mental, half the time I just want to let them leave and have what they want, but Head Office keeps eyes on the cameras to make sure we're doing anything we can to stop stock being lifted.

The attendant who pulled out the gun isn't very smart though. No idea why he'd walk closer and closer to the guy. Keep your distance or someone might snatch that from you. It's a ranged weapon, just tell him to get on the ground and call the police while having him at a distance at gun point.

surveillance of public areas and key finical buildings like banks are acceptable. A necessary crime prevention measure. However there is a thick line in the sand when it comes to cameras in residential or private areas like bathrooms.

20 years of driving. Think the only time I've used a handbrake is when working on a car, parking on a very steep incline, or when driving something like a big U-Haul moving truck. It's not taught here for the most part and I've never had a car roll after being put in park. So, not sure if it's folks not using a handbrake or just folks not taking the car out of gear. Of course, I could just be stupid, lucky, or some combination of both.

I’m a cashier in Oklahoma USA and if we try to stop a thief like that girl did we would be fired. We are not allowed to go out the door at all to get a better look at their getaway car either or they would probably fire us. Because they could be outside the door on the corner and stab or shoot us. They say our lives are not worth risking for the products their stealing.

That last one. It was just like what happened to me at work. I didn't have my whole foot on the step, I think there was some mud on my foot and my foot slipped right off. My ass hit the ground at the same time my back slammed the steps, and I was the last one there. IT HURT LIKE A MF! Fortunately, I didn't break anything so I took the next couple of days off.

The worst place I've banged my head was back in high school during gym class, I went to drink some water off a drinker that was placed near a wall corner. and once I was done I was about to speed back to the class and banged my head as I made the turn. I would argue in most Americans mind the phrase “If you have nothing to hide” isn’t the really the point, it’s more about civil liberty and how much we let the government get away with just blatantly dragnet surveilling everyone and turning into a big brother state. Don’t get me wrong cameras are great in public places for loads of reason but it can be a slippery slope especially with clumsy facial recognition and licensee plate capturing when no crimes been committed, etc. For America’s part of the “social contract” some levels of surveillance just kinda fly in the face of outlined principals and ideals we hold on to.
