As a Portuguese man, It's not uncommon to see tourists from Germany, France, Spain during the summer etc. The British on the other hand, are just unfortunately a bit too much. In my experience, British people (middle aged and elderly) are really good people and usually well behaved and cause little troubles. Unfortunately, their youngsters are the problem here. It's as if all the under 30s, teens and mid 30s adults just come here to get really, really drunk to the point that it's dangerous not only to their health but to others around them. They come here, not all of them, to get "a one night stand"and drunk with their mates. As you know, alcoholism breeds violence hence the issue with them not only in Portugal but in my neighbour, Spain. I think all of this stems from a few observations me and my Portuguese family have seen, they are not a family oriented people. They highly value independence from such a young age. This is both good and bad. On one side of the argument, being independent at a young age makes you grow and be more mature. However, there is a massive danger here. If your kids are taught to be sulf sufficient, independent at a young age with minimal supervision from your parents what do you get? Young adults, teens that think they know it all without the guidance of their parents. Studies have shown that the human mind is only fully developed until their mid twenties. The British parenting style is a problem. It's as if their friends are their family. They don't value family as much as we do. In Portugal, likewise nearby Spain, Italy and Greece we are raised to be not only close with our families but friends with them. For instance, I'm friends with my uncles, aunties, cousins, siblings and parents. We socialise on a week by week basis, we go out with each other, we visit each other's house, we eat out with one another. This is universal within Spanish culture too, Greek and Italian culture as I've lived in their countries for a few years. Family is the root of the British problem. 🤔

replace british with "chinese" or "african" and you would be called a racist. I don't see why applying it to British people is any different? Individuals are the problem, not a nationality.
@maria-212
@maria-212 Год назад
@@partyp3opl393 first of all it’s not racist because he’s also white (he’s European in case you skipped geography) so maybe xenophobic yes, but racist is not the right term. Second of all, he isn’t wrong. He wouldn’t need to single out Africans or Chinese as you claim because those cultures actually do value family. The importance of individuality is ingrained in British society and yes that doesn’t apply to everybody else, but judging the way that British youth generally act not only in their own country but in others, I think that’s enough evidence to signify their lack of family values. If you’ve grown up without knowing the importance of it, it probably means nothing to you but most Mediterraneans, Europeans in general and people from other parts of the world would clearly see the problem with this indépendant culture
@partyp3opl393
@partyp3opl393 Год назад
@@maria-212 "Not racist because he is white". Yeah, it wasn't racist for the holocaust because they were white people. Get off your horse, it's embarrassing. If you think I don't value family just because I'm British, then please take your stereotype elsewhere and just think about what you are saying. Sure, there are lots of bad apples in the UK. But there are also lots of really nice people - the same as any country. But to label a nationality based on the actions of a few is WRONG.
@maddox-mt4xq
@maddox-mt4xq Год назад
@@maria-212 what you are talking about is individualism which is definitely not a uniquely British thing my friend, most Scandinavian countries (most notably Sweden) are the same but I don’t think anyone complains about them abroad. As a Brit I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that it’s our drinking culture and the real “working man’s pub” mentality that causes this. That being said, you can lump us all in the same boat and I have seen people of all nationalities behave awfully abroad. Im going interrailing soon (including Amsterdam) and it’s incredibly unfair to lump me and others into this British stereotype when Britain (specifically London) is known for being very multicultural.

I’m nearly 18, I’m an introverted person but I can confirm drinking is a huge problem here 😅 underage drinking as well. I’ve got drunk before, like very drunk being sick and honestly not enjoyable but it’s a bad drinking culture here. Like everyone gets super drunk and it’s unhealthy, I quit drinking unless it’s on special occasions and in small amounts because I don’t really enjoy it and I only really did it at parties but to answer your question yes it is the norm to get blackout drunk and it’s peer pressure and all of that. Or just wanting to fit in. Uni students are probably the same 😅 I think some teens or young adults my age are responsible but you’re right they party hard here as well so it definitely is an issue, sorry about any awful tourists you experience they are probably alcoholics and I’ve heard at uni if you don’t drink you’re outcasted so yeah drinking is a huge issue here. By the way to clarify none of my parents are alcoholics, I just drank too much at some parties I think it’s too normalised to over-drink or drink whenever you gather with someone in Britain

I lived on the Costa del Sol and found that the British expats were instrumental in keeping their rowdier compatriots in check. My neighbour, a retired prison guard, patrolled with local police. His missed his truncheon, I guess. I observed the same phenomenon in northern Thailand, where young American trekkers were kept at bay by American retirees who'd settled there. Many of the latter were former teachers, who unsurprisingly were quite adept at it.
