Dylan has as much fun as the audience - if not more - while performing "Goodbye Jimmy Reed" at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, RI, November 26, 2021, near the end of the first leg of his current three-year Grand World Tour.
He starts out high energy, and becomes more animated as the song goes on. His facial expressions throughout, and especially by the last verse are whole show of their own, worth the price of admission just by themselves, at least for me.
What first led me to start videotaping in 1989, in fact, was my inevitable, but still deep disappointment that I couldn't remember each and every amazing expression which passed in such quick succession across Dylan's face as he sang every line, while I listened right after concerts to the audios recorded by my husband.
Dylan has never had much success acting on screen the few times he's tried, but when he's singing, his ability to project, convey, and emote visually is a whole different story!
The original footage if this perforance had a lot of problems, unfortunately. But the good parts were so good, and Dylan's performance so great, that I spent considerable hours over about 6 weeks doing what I could to make it more watchable throughout, and also tweak the sound.
I hope you enjoy the performance as much as I do!

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing when this record came out. The way on Goodbye Jimmy Reed it’s like he’s shaking hands with the guy from Highway 61 one last time… and MMF one of his greatest songs dropping as it did right in the early midst of Covid-19… I wasn’t expecting to get such a vital Dylan moment in my time, so long after the 60s and 70s, in such a different world..Saw him a few years later, 2023 in.a semi full theatre in Seville. Phenomenal band, they ended on a deeply felt version of every grain of sand. Choked up a bit. My dad passed in 2018. I know how much he would have loved this record. Thanks Bob, wherever, whoever you are.

I paid for a front-row seat at his June show in Redding, and he was smiling all night. He even stood up behind his piano and applauded back at a guy in the audience who'd given him a one-man standing ovation.

Yes. I also saw the 3 shows at the Beacon Theatre the weekend before. All were excellent - but Dylan seemed a bit more subdued than in Providence, and also seemed to be less comfortable standing, which may have been a factor as well. He definitely seemed to be having more fun at this Providence show right after Thanksgiving.

I’m currently going through the footage, editing and posting clips as quickly as I can manage, but I do a fair amount of work upgrading picture and sound quality as best I can, so it takes a while. Depending on the venue, front row often isn’t the best place to be. Unless your short and a lot of people stand up much of the show. 😉 But esp. these days with Bob sitting behind that upright piano. And sound right up front center is often not good either, because the sound is focused further back. 4-5 or 6 rows back is often better for watching than 1st row. And sound is often best about 8-10 rows back in the center of the orchestra. You can be further forward on the side. Right in front of one of speaker stacks a couple of rows or more back can sound really good - but you should probably bring ear plugs if you don’t want to damage your hearing over time. 😵‍💫 For seeing Bob up close, your best bet is sitting just about anywhere with a good zoom. 😅

@@milkcow Hi - would have replied sooner but it's been busy. I've seen Dylan at this Providence theater a bunch of times, under different names - Ocean State Theater originally I think, then Performing Arts Center, then The Strand. First time was during 1980 gospel tour. Then a few times in the 1990s. Probably later, too. Most memorably at the 1980 gospel show, Dylan stopped at some point during his set and said, "I can tell you one thing for sure. There aren't going to be any altar calls tonight. There's a big pit in front of the stage." So I guess he noticed the same pit back then and didn't much like it either. Still, I thought it was a funny remark for him to make - because even without the pit, I really don't think Bob was going to be inviting people to make "altar calls." I didn't hear about him doing anything like that at earlier shows, starting with the 1979 Warfield Theater shows in San Francisco and on through the previous shows in 1980. He certainly didn't invite anyone to come up at the show the night or 2 before in Worcester. That show in 1980 I think was the only time I sat in the orchestra. Every other time I've been in the mezzanine - partly for obvious reasons after 1989. But I've learned over the years that if you're short, (I'm 5'2") and if people are possibly going to stand for long periods of the show, it's a much better view. Some theaters' upper sections are further back. But a lot of them including Providence, the mezzanine hangs pretty far forward over the orchestra, and it's not that high up, so you can get a better view than from more than half the orchestra seats for sure. The other memorable thing I witnessed at this theater was in April 1996. It was weirdly a general admission show, and I had my camcorder so I tear-assed it up to the mezzanine as soon as I got in. There were a couple rows mostly full already, but still good seats. But the best seats - the front 2-3 rows that were a step down past a little aisleway, I think, and right up against the mezzanine rail -- which is where I was headed (I sat in the front row there in 1994) - they were roped off so no one could sit in them. I wondered why, if they were reserved, who for. Just before the show started, a few minutes before the theater went dark, a whole procession of beefy young guys in suits and ties, and their girlfriends dressed to the nines in fancy cocktail dresses, lots of jewelry, hair done, lots of make-up, etc. - looking like they were halfway going to a fancy prom, a wedding, or a nightclub - all marched in a line to those seats and filled them up. I swear some of the guys were wearing pinky rings. It was pretty clear to me after a minute who they were -- high school and/or college age, and maybe a bit older also, sons and daughters of connected mafia people in Providence. It has been a BIG mafia city for a long time. The way the guys and girls was pretty unmistakable. The special treatment. There were even some tiny cocktail like tables placed between the seats in the front, and they had waitresses coming during the show delivery drinks to them and them only. For most of the show, they watched fairly politely, not too excited, talked a little, whatever. Then near the end of the show, next to last song before the encore, Dylan launched into "Joey." And I could see a few of the guys start pointing and elbowing each other a bit, smiling and winking a bit. Dylan didn't do the song at any other show during that spring tour. It showed up a exactly 2 fall dates that year, but was definitely not a regular selection on that year's setlists. I've always wondered if Dylan chose the song on his own, knowing these mafia princes and princesses were going to be there by some kind of special arrangement, or if someone had asked him to do it! I figure the theater owner and/or local promoter had to be "connected' in some way. Anyway, it was memorable.

@@ArturArtist yeah the state was pretty crooked back then. Could have been political connections too. Who knows. It’s all the same crap. We’ve probably been at a lot of the same shows over the years. @ArturArtist Год назад
They did. I went to 4 shows last November - the 3 at the Beacon in NYC and the 1 in Providence, RI. Security was tougher getting in than it once was. I had to experiment with new ways just to get stuff in. In 2022 they started taking everyone's cellphones and putting them in pouches to be retrieved after the show, to stop people taking pix with their phones. I'm not sure if that might have made my thing actually easier rather than harder, but didn't get a chance to get to any 2022 shows to see. I'm hoping I'll get to some more in 2023. 2021 was actually the first time I shot a concert in 17 years. I used to get to lots of shows, but during those years of "retirement" only managed to see 6 shows total, and never more than one at a time. So I wasn't going to mess up my few rare opportunities to see Dylan during that period. But with the opportunity to see a few shows in a row again, I couldn't resist giving it another try.

@ArturArtist
@ArturArtist Год назад
I don’t think Dylan was having trouble remembering lyrics. He stood less long than this while performing hthis song at the 3 immediately preceding shows, which I also saw. Whether due to back problems as some have suggested, or a remnant of the vertigo Dylan recently mentioned that started in 2019 and continued through the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020, he clearly was having trouble standing or walking for any length of time during most of the shows he performer in 2021; certainly at the 4 I saw in Nov 2021 - those were the 3 at the Beacon Theatre in NY, 11/19-21, preceding this one in Providence a few days later on 11/26. Bob actually stood longer and more frequently during this Providence concert than he did at any of the 3 in NY. But, except for one short number - Melancholy Mood - he never stood up for a whole song. Either he stayed seated at the piano the whole time, or he’d get up to sing a couple of the first lines - not even a whole verse like he does here. Then he’d quickly retreat to the piano where mostly stayed seated for the rest of the number. He never seemed to be having any trouble remembering lyrics to any song he performed at this show or the others I saw. Any problems he’s having seem strictly physical, not any issue with his memory.

Umm, Weren't all📲 Bannished & locked 🔐 away in Bullet proof, sound proof canteens, how did this video get past Dylan's, prying eyes, it was almost lying on his upright 🎹

The use of the "Yondr" pouches began in 2022. Great video! I had good seats at the three 2021 NYC concerts plus Wash. DC, and then in 2022: the tour opener in Phoenix, the three Los Angeles concerts, plus the tour closer in Dublin. This video is just as impressive and with a better view.
