www.MidwaySimpl... - In this new episode of the Midway Decluttering Show, you're going to listen to a very interesting decluttering story. It might be a bit weird, but it holds a very important lesson on how to easily start decluttering your home and life.
My special guest in this episode is Lorilee Lippincott of Loving Simple Living. Her blog is one of my favorites. Turns out she was a minimalist before she even heard of the word!
She is the author of 3 books: Simple Living: Thirty Days To Less Stuff and More Life (already being read by 55,000+ people), The Simple Living Handbook, and 321 Stop: Stop Running and Start Living.
Enjoy watching this new episode!

I have a big house full of stuff but very well organised. In fact I don’t need any of those things, still I put them properly. I am interested in creativity. Now as I am getting older, I realise that I am not getting enough time for my passion because of the clutter at home to look after. So now I have started to de clutter.

Looking at my larger things now, got rid of clothes and books, decorations, extra cookware, now slowly selling furniture pieces I love but can really part with and open up my space. Also considering selling my car and sharing a vehicle. Had an addiction to greenhouses, impulse buying plants for my yard. I went back to starting plants from seed in the window in early spring, and nurturing them along instead of buying the big, showy grown up versions. Keenly looking for things to part with. It frees up my mind, my creativity. Feels like a relief!

Pam Young & Peggy Jones "The Slob Sisters" started teaching How to Get Organized back in 1977. They have lots of help on the internet for those who are NOT born-organized. Deniece Schofield teaches how to get organized at seminars that she began in 1982. Her book "Confessions of an Organized Homemaker" is worth reading. She had five children & kept her house easy to clean & completely organized.

For me, decluttering the books was much easier than attacking my closet, that was the last thing I wanted to do and it caused me a lot of stress just thinking about it. But happy to say it's well on its way now :)

Very helpful interview! Thank you so much. I know the why of decluttering but always get stuck in the sheer work of it. But it's worth it, I know.

Q: I like making props, crafts out of recycled things. Everytime I want to get rid of something I think of an idea for it. Suggesions?

+SuperDashRendar Make all the beautiful craft things and then give them to Oxfam or Red Cross etc, then you are saving the planet, giving service, re purposing, decluttering AND helping people.... St Teresa of Crafts?

Have two or three different boxes of various sizes. Put the "wow! Neat!" Items in those boxes and after a certain amount of time, say six months, if you don't use what's in them or don't find an item inspiring ( what WAS I thinking...?) then let it go. That way you can get serendipitous stuff but you have a limited designated space for those supplies.

Know needs from wants. Then rethink the needs and try and pare items down to items that can do more than one thing. Also ask yourself IF a natural disaster were to happen what would you actually miss.

I am 27 and have had trouble decluttering for 3 years. Moving back and forth, I'm an artist and have sentimental value with what I feel like is everything. However the stress and mental energy of always trying to organize is crippling me. I am going to try some of these techniques. A tip that helps me is to give away something I have sentiment towards to someone else. They appreciate it and you don't feel like you lost the item.

Books are organized and neat. Why not start with the messy piles in the garage, attic and miscellaneous stuff stashed in closets?

My problem was when I went shopping so, now instead of putting the item I like into my cart right a way I will look at it and think do I really need it or do I just want it and most of the time even if I put the item into my cart I usually end up taking it out and not buying it. Most of my money is spent on the things I need and not want.

I moved to a one bedroom apartment when i got married and we both needed to get rid of stuff. I had half the space and now I have to split it honestly I take up more space than my husband we are planning a family eventually a big family I also want to home school and do canning, knitting and sewing so I have stuff. I had to systematically go through each section yes no maybe then again yes no maybe what am I realistically going to be able to use in x# of years before my next move and how many times do I want to be moving this. as far as starting a family I do hold on to things for the future but I saw most mom of little babies get a pile of cute either pink or blue baby clothes at a shower and that is all well and good until now with a new born its a thousand pieces of laundry to manhandle I decided there is no medical need to have an ultrasound if i am not high risk so i am going to skip it midwives often don't do them. when I have my shower we are getting gender neutral specify how much I am looking for and that we live in a one bedroom apartment most of the really impractical baby stuff is gender specific anyway we have a tiny washer and dryer so between me and my husband we have to do almost five loads a week so add a baby in cloth diapers that's every day. I don't need two weeks worth of clothes I also found thigh high baby socks that double as pants and don't fall off so I don't have to spend much time finding mates for socks my husband has one type of sock they are all the same recently he had to acquire a small number of thick socks for the snow and I have my socks paired down that matting socks is practically a non issue I like getting second hand free things but I have to realize sometimes I have to be picky otherwise it will consume me. my advice gender natural stuff

I grew up in a decent sized house, but in my 20s I lived in a shared space, which teaches you pretty quickly to be tidy, and there's simply no space to have stuff. Now that the boyfriend and I are living in a 1 bedroom house, stuff keeps accumulating EVERYWHERE! I have started minimizing my stuff, but don't want to impose on my partner, but just having a manageable amount of STUFF is rather liberating. You can actually see what you do own :-)

mile225jr I know for a fact he's not coming to help us declutter. After all he's not real. Religion was made up to keep us in line. And to promote retail sales did you buy Christmas presents? When you should be buying Jesus Birthday Presents! Like planting a tree, unplugging a stream from trash ect. My real father died but I don't still buy him presents. Also if god was real he wouldn't want us buying expensive presents we can't afford, that is a sin. No debt. Debt is wrong!! It's in the Lord's prayer. (Matthew 6:12 "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.") (Matthew 6:19 " Do not lay up for yourselfs treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.") The Bible is a history book nothing more. our children read history books everyday in school slightly altered. (Look up the Vietnam War for example.) Jesus was a magician, nothing more nothing less. Everyone has the power to do what he did. ("By the way the Lion did lay down by the Lamb.") According to the Bible. If you don't understand you never will. I have studied every Bible for every religion and no were does it say decorate a tree and give each other presents. Or color Easter eggs to celebrate my resurrection. End of story !!
