Great video as always Matt. I have owned three cars from new and compared the official MPG to real world (almost obsessively) on all of them. I've done that to the point of not trusting the trip computers (which are also out by about 10%) and instead by brimming the tanks and using maths. I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a need for a new test. Real MPG figures can be calculated using a simple formula. Manufactures claimed MPG x 0.8 = real world MPG figures. I'm not joking, it is surprisingly accurate!

To achieve the claimed numbers is in a way mostly a test of willpower. I owned a 335i for 11 years and it had a claimed 7.2l/100km and once when driving about 890 km in one run I achieved 7.3l/100 km and on the way back 7.4. I achieved it by accelerating moderately, obeying the speed limit, coasting whenever possible, never flooring it when overtaking. I also had a really good number for city driving for many years but during the last few years I didn't have the willpower but instead feeling like using the power in a more aggressive way, of course the range shortened.

What this video omits is that trip computers tend to be optimistic too. On my 2011 Polo 1.4 it's usually about 4 mpg over my brim to brim calculation: 43.2 versus 38.95 on my last fill-up (city driving in summer). Yet testers tend to take the trip readout as gospel.

Owning a BMW M235i, I can say that getting the claimed 27.4mpg urban figure is easy. In fact I sometimes go above (30+)! You just have to adjust your driving style - have a very light foot, accelerate slowly/barely brake (let momentum slow you down) and understand when to let off the throttle to allow momentum and gravity to keep you moving. Oh, and to absolutely let rip when you feel like it ;) life isn't always about fuel economy!
@peanusbenis5631
@peanusbenis5631 6 лет назад
Rubbish. I had an M135i and I could never break 25mpg in town and that was with me accelerating pathetically slow and inciting many an angry overtake.
@peanusbenis5631
@peanusbenis5631 6 лет назад
Michael Sundarev What does that even mean?
@skybluesky1000
@skybluesky1000 6 лет назад
James Batchelor Actually accelerating slowly will give you worse fuel economy than accelerating "quickly". I don't mean you should floor it from a stand still but using 2/4 of the throttle and getting up to the speed limit and start to cruise is better than using 1/4 of the throttle and then cruise. Also something to note is that this is better in the long run, so if you're driving alot everyday then it will help you. Other things you could do to improve fuel economy is to: -skip gears when going up 1-2-4 or 1-2-3-5 -let go of the throttle when approaching a red light and let it roll as much as possible. Shift down when nessecery and try to keep the rpm above 1200-1300. Keeping it above will result in 0 gas being used but if it drops below 1200-1300 the car will automatically use gas to keep the engine running/not stalling -Try to always use the highway and avoid the city when driving as driving on the highway will result in less fuel being wasted because you're driving at a constant speed and you're not stopping and accelerating all the time as you would when driving in the city - I don't recommend doing this but driving behind a big truck on the highway really helps with fuel economy as driving behind a big truck will massively reduce air resistance/drag. So if you need 30% throttle to stay at 100km/h, you might only need 20%-15% throttle when you are driving behind the truck. And obviously the closer you're to the truck the more pronounced the effect will become. But as I said, this is not something I would recommend unless you're driving an Audi or BMW :)
@robduncan599
@robduncan599 6 лет назад
James Batchelor : Yes 100% . The people poo pooing your claim don't know what their high power cars are capable of in terms of fuel economy , largely due to never really trying to get max mpg . In the 1980s i had a ford capri 3.0 v6 with poor fuel figures (15-18 mpg avg was common ) yet using Hypermiling tips i got regular 30+ mpg . I once got 40 mpg trying very hard . Today i have VW golf + 1.6 d with a combined figure 52 mpg (not blue motion ) i get avg 700-800 miles on 1 tank ( 57-61 mpg avg ) The most important thing to get good fuel ( especially a high power car ) is as you say very gentle on acceleration & reading the road well ahead will save a lot of fuel . At what cost ? In time saved in an average journey in the real world , next to no difference , with all the congestion it makes little difference how quick you take off from the lights you have to slow down just as quick .

Currently on the 2018 Alfa Giulia 180bhp (2.2 diesel) Speciale, I get up to around 53mpg on a motorway run and around 37mpg on short city runs. These both include some "spirited" accelerations, but not flat out all the time, mainly sensible with the odd burst here and there. I haven't yet reset the trip to see what it would get after serious acceleration and no economical driving - will have to check!

This video made me chuckle. I've got a 2011 Jetta TDI with 300,000 km, almost 200,000 miles. I drive 150 combined miles every day to work and back. Part back road, part highway, part city traffic. I actually get over the estimated MPGs for my car. Which I believe is 34, and I get between 37 and 40 depending. My wife has a 2013 Mazda CX-5, drives around a 50 mile round trip through city and side road, she also achieves equal to or above the rated MPGs of her car. Cars will do the MPG they are advertised to do. Will do it quite easily in fact, so long as you're a smart driver. Give yourself a bit of extra time when you go places so you don't have to speed. Know that when you start getting above 50 mph and on to highway speeds it is more efficient to run the A/C than have the windows open. The same goes in reverse, below 50 just open a window. Don't be a clown on the throttle, keep it smooth, and try to avoid hard braking. What this nutsack doesn't take into account is it's how you drive that matters. When they get these mpg figures they do it by driving an empty stretch of highway at the speed limit, they don't take into account people being late and doing 100 mph and such. They aren't posting false or unattainable MPGs, if they were it would be false advertising and they would be hit with heavy fines. They can prove you CAN in fact achieve these MPGs so long as you're not a knob behind the wheel.

The extra urban figure from the old system was at an average speed of 47mph not 70mph like most people do on the motorway. This actually makes a massive difference to mpg for cars of normal size engines but for cars of large engines with no consideration for mpg it makes very little difference. For example independent tests on a Mercedes 450SEL 6.9L did 22mpg at 30mph and 19mpg at 70mph. My personal car with a 1.5l uses twice the fuel at 70mph vs 30mph.

I've noticed this with electric vehicles too. Whenever I watch a British review of an EV, they quote the advertised range (like 200 mi for the Leaf) and then give a far lower real world range that they determined by driving it. A real world range which just so happens to line up with EPA numbers more often than not.

I actually manage to destroy VW's average MPG in their MK4 Golf (mine's the 1.6, 105 BHP, petrol variant). Claimed average is 39.6 MPG but I always manage 46+. I always drive economically though, which involves me feathering the throttle, changing gear under 2k RPM (unless forced to go over) and always keep it in 5th gear (highest it's got) when going 30 MPH or over.

Fuel economy really depends on how you drive too. My MPV gives 9 kmpl in city driving and gives 15kmpl (higher than its certified mileage of 14 under standard test conditions) on highway driving while going at 70-80 kmph. IF i go at 100 it falls to about 12 kmpl.... 120 10 kmpl and 140 its 8 kmpl. Its really how you drive that causes such variation in mileage.

Hi there, very interesting, I've never been incloned to believe advertising, but ten years ago we bought a second-hand Skoda Fabia, 1.9 turbodiesel. We have now done forty five thousand miles on it and the average fuel consumption, based on recorded mileage and fuel purchase, is about fifty three MPG!. It is not as if I always drive slowly either, if I clod it on motorways all day at 70mph plus a bit it may drop to 52mpg. It looks as if we'll have to hang onto it for a bit if what you are saying is true we will be hard pressed to do better. Cheers, Richard.

My Fabia vRS is listed as having about 47.3mpg but you can easily achieve slightly higher than that if you try I’ve had around 52mpg out of it... not bad for a car with both a Turbocharger and a Supercharger

I drive a 2010 citroen c4 picasso 1.6 hdi to work 26 miles. I live in skelmorlie scotland and have a variation of hills and motorway on my route. The manufacturer claims 53 mpg average but on my route when actually concentrating on my efforts to drive efficiently and not putting my foot past quarter throttle and what not, the trip computer after my daily commute regularly say 64 mpg after I complete the the full journey. I have also further tested this by topping the tank to the first click at the pump, running my commute and using the amount of fuel put back in and the number of miles traveled to accurately measure the mpg and it almost exactly matches what the trip computer records so I can trust the data the car is recording to measure my consumption. I believe most drivers do not have the patience or attention span to actually drive economically and that's why the forums are full of these discussions condemning the manufacturers for far flung mpg claims when in fact there is a lack of skill.

I think we will be surprised about the Nitrous Oxide emissions of all those tricilindric petrol engines that have become so popular in Europe in recent years. I've heard these turbocharged small engines are not as clean as we have been told. I've got an ecoboost and fuel consumption is far superior than what the official figures say.

VERY accurate depiction of an Audi driver @ 1:25! haha. I bet we will see loads of models withdrawn from sale between now and September once they are found to fail the new RDE tests, with diesels being the biggest casualty. RIP derv!

My VW mk2 Golf gti will do 45-55 mpg, on the motorway. Considering it’s 28 years old, I’m pretty happy with that! Just had the engine fully rebuilt but I doubt that’ll make the fuel economy much better

Well what I've seen is that the biggest offenders are small turbocharged petrol engines while diesels tend to be much closer the estimated figures and many times almost true

In the past i've ALWAYS manages to get more than the manufacturer's stated MPG!Oh, except for my second S2 Land Rover. The more new bits i swapped on the engine the less MPG i got. After new dizzy, leads, points and carb, i was down to 6MPG!So i swapped the 2225cc petrol engine for a used 2500cc diesel out of a LDV van

PSA were quite forthcoming with "real" MPG figures a last year using a similar testing method, with plans to publish NOx emissions at a later date. The question is, why didn't anybody else do the same thing?

My experience with several different cars and makes Mini Cooper S, Volvo V60, Porsche 981 S are some examples: one can actually match and in some cases beat the stated mpg if one tries to. Instead if one drives like there is no world tomorrow or without any insight / planing then one does not have the right to expect miracles. Miracles are not to be expected if measures are made whilst the engine is cold, on very short runs or spending more time like a dead duck sat on traffic than actually driving for example and as well. This massive fuss that most and in particular the press have done throughout the years has never been a problem to me.

Very good upload and cant understand the direction of comments.. Anyway here is mine..Question 1.. Would your dream car.. Say hypothetically be a Porsche 911, stop you buying it if you only returned 20mpg against claimed 30mpg.. Answer no.. Why ? you couldn't give a toss its a Porsche and your happy.. Question 2 your dream car is a environmentally friendly sporty eco acceptable vehicle lets say for an example a BMWi8 that beasts 0-60 and produces a claimed 130 mpg but in reality achieves high forty's.. dam you would be mad.. Lets face it a huge percentage of normal car purchases are based on regular vehicle purchases not dreams not Porches or alike..part of our normal car buying decisions are based on affordability, practicability and achievable accurate mpg..A claimed 57mpg for a normal saloon that only hits 40 needs to be addressed

Focus 1.0 EcoBoost has given as 53.3 MPG, which I think is really good. That Astra also has a one liter turbo engine, so the 40 MPG sounds really bad. Our driving is pretty average city + highway 50/50.

I'm in the United States so our fuel economy isn't calculated the same, but my car's EPA estimated economy was 17 city, 24 highway back when it was produced in 2005. Mind you, this is in a 3,800 pound sedan with a 4.6 liter V8 and a body as big as an Escalade. I regulary average 18.5 mpg in the city and 25+mpg on the highway, so it's estimated economy was calculated very accurately.

In uk u use MPG - distance per gallon. In the rest of Europe we use l/100km - how much fuel we will use with given consumption if we go 100 km.

I follow the shift light religiously and drive as economically as possible (coasting in gear, staying out of boost). I even inflated my tires more than what the sticker says. On my commute in the city, I average about 32 MPG (imperial) in my 1.8 golf VII. However, on the highway I can get it to 50 MPG.

you should never coast because its dangerous and it won't save you fuel. You also don't want to rev too low or you lug the engine making it use more fuel. Downhill is the best save though. Pick a high gear and take your foot off the accelerator and you will use no fuel going down hill at all because the ECU stops injecting fuel.

How does this work what would be the mpg if I was going 100mph in fiesta
@gravemind6536
@gravemind6536 6 лет назад
It would be incredibly low since its got a 1.0 litre petrol. Honestly if you plan to do 100mph get a more powerful car it will actually get better fuel economy.

In my experience with my 2014 swift sport are rated at 6.5L/100ks but i am able to achieve 6.1/100km. To help me get those figures i inflate my tyres 2psi above the recommended level, coast in gear as much as possible and use windows instead of aircon as much as possible

This tv show is the best for educational. remember I am from south Africa so we often look for quick wins and fixes so if we can go faster on less petrol or sometimes we use diesel then its good. Mister Mat please don't encourage us to drive stolen cars it is a problem in my country.

I have checked it... I mean I got 26 mpg on my first drive (before I got my license) but then it fell to just a tick over 20. But my car is supposed to get 24 city and 28 highway. I've tried to Prius it, but it doesn't help out much (maybe 1/2 mpg better).
