Have you heard of the Hampton Ferry at Evesham? We take our narrowboat over the ferry chain and continue our journey along the River Avon. Amusingly we also pass through the hilariously named 'Wyre Piddle' and have a few laughs.
Annamarie has painted a beautiful rendition of the our travels today and the artwork is available on our online shop- please check it out- artbyannamarie...
Thank you to Paul Plowman from www.mrol.com.au for sharing the amazing footage with us and keeping up such an awesome website.

@@nathanisip Annamarie and Kath have been great about including railway content, which even though I'm here for the narrowboating is greatly appreciated. Looking through past videos will find a few "Through the Hedge" videos which feature railways and attached tea rooms, if any. One cruising video even features a preservation steam train crossing the bridge which their boat was just passing beneath. Annamarie did a watercolor of that event. And they have an enameled pin representing the event.

Okay, 1963 would have been during British Railways era. Now, being an American who has long liked UK railways but is no expert on the matter, I'm guessing the locomotive is either an ex-GWR Pannier Tank or is one built to similar design. And in mostly an outright guess, I'm going to guess the carriage which seems to be in overall maroon is from the Mk1 series of BR coaching stock.

I would stop due to the windy conditions. If you are not in a rush to get somewhere, just have a pause and don't stress. We had to do this several times in the French canals. We would be set up to tie up on the starboard side and the wind would gust and I'd have to scramble for fenders before being up against the port side of the lock. Fond memories. Thanks again for bringing us all along for the ride.

Hello ladies, thank you for another great video. I enjoyed it at the crossing. I work for Amtrak here in the states and I love trains. Have been doing it for almost 16 years. I travel from Los Angeles to Chicago and back, then I drive home to Las Vegas. Absolutely love the painting. Glad you stopped. I don't care for the wind but as you know taking keep going unless the winds are at 50 or more. Then they make us stop. Hugs to both 💕💕

Have a windy Chadbury lock idea Kath could make in her workshop; what ya need are about a dozen old lawn mower wheels, a lot of clamps, and plywood or sheet metal -- what ya do is make some horizontal wheels to clamp to the gunnels and then you can roll right along the walls in to and out of the lock! And then if you make 2 sets, the boats coming out could roll right along your other side. Brilliant, no? ;D

What an interesting journey. Thank you for sharing so many fascinating things about this area, the ferry was so clever. I say pull over when it’s so windy, I would think piloting the boat could be a real challenge and not near so enjoyable. With that said, it made me think of my husband and I many years ago deciding who would ride which horse in the stable...it depended on what kind of ride you wanted that day :).

As enthusiastic hire boaters, we would probably have objectives to reach, rather than stop on half the day! Don't forget, if it takes you a week to go from A) to B), it doesn't matter, but we not only want to make the same objective, we've got to get the boat back! We would only have three days (at most) to get there before we have to turn round. Nice train though, looks like one of those rail motor things where the fireman stays on the engine, but the driver uses the primitive 'cab' at the end of the coach when propelling it. We didn't get to see if the original track bed is still visible. Nice vlog girls.

Info: The diamond lock is at Pershore. I remember some friends went to a do in Coventry. When they were asked due to their strange accent, where they had come from, they replied Pershore- which sounded like Persia to the organisers. So they were given the 'Greatest Distance' prize for travelling so far. A free bottle of wine. We had great fun on the community field. I had a heart attack on the 1st of September. You don't take that lying down, but I was fortunately. After four days and two stents I am back home and now have to take more pills and hope to get walking up to 6 miles a day! I did about 200 yds today. Love you girls and your brave trip. Gpx

Talking about windy, even though automobile instead of narrowboat, there was one day driving around Virginia Beach in 1980s on a gusty day with all the car windows open, just as I turned my head to see oncoming traffic for a turn, a gust hit at just the right angle to blow my glasses off my face! Fortunately they landed inside the car!

In the US that type of ferry is often called "cable ferry." Several here do use steel cables and are large enough to transport 1-2 passenger cars at a time. There are three in North Carolina, with old gasoline motors for their power (and no braking - throttle and clutching only.) In double checking this I found out that the same state (where I lived for a decade) used to have more ferries and several, like Hannah's Ferry, used the river current for propulsion.

What a fantastic coincidence you could uncover an old film clip to reproduce where you were at that rope ferry. Odd that such a ferry is still in use although I didn't see anyone but the driver/pilot/rower/rope puller on board. It seems to me rivers versus canals are a very personal choice. If I were a regular narrowboat owner I would avoid such tourist traps as Stratford-on-Avon as it seems like the M1 - busy, expensive and over-used. I agree with your philosophy that once in a while makes a change, but canal life at its best is slow, peaceful and quiet. John, Ontario, Canada.

Loving this journey on the Avon. Really appreciated my diesel heater this weekend as it was quite chilly at night. Saw a Narrowboat do almost a 360 as the helmsman lost control in a strong gust the other day and then his stern was stuck in the mud at the side of the canal so it can be a problem but not in my Cruiser as it has a powerful engine and is much lower down. Great to see another episode from the river Avon. Our river experience (and we have no experience of the canals at all!), is from the Norfolk Broads, where we owned a boat for 10 years and where I grew up. Quite a different experience to the canals, with tides and no locks at all! The chain ferry you passed, reminds me of one we know well, both from the water and by road. It is Reedham Ferry, on the river Yare. www.broadsnet.co.uk/riveryare4/reedham-chain-ferry/. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reedham_Ferry. This one carries cars. Enjoying the vlogs very much 😀. The wind is an absolute pain and led us into difficulties (more than once or twice) but never stopped us from moving on. First experience was on the very first day of boating and we unceremoniously bumped a complete row of moored boats on our way to the first lock. If the boat owners hadn't been so angry with us, it might have looked funny. We learned a lot in the years we had our boat but still have to smile at our first encounter with wind!

p.s. I was told that Wyre Piddle had a winery and that they labelled the bottles "Chateau Piddle"

So true, once you line up and the wind pushes you against one it’s hard not to hit them all.

I love all kinds of weather except those below freezing, so I would probably stay above during wind. Rain, however, is best enjoyed below.

When I was younger, we had a log cabin [6" walls] on a lake in northwest Maine. It was 5 1/2 miles across , the wind blew so strong, the curtains in the cabin would move, even when the windows were closed.

Hi Kath and Annemarie. Lovely vlog, but shame you couldn’t do a “through the hedge” as I would have liked to have seen around Evesham. Are you not doing “through the hedge” anymore?

Oh, dear. I live with constant wind. In the desert areas I've lived, we would get 50 mph spring and fall breezes. Here in Texas, if the wind stops blowing, you start looking for a tornado. So, I would have powered on without even realizing I could stop :)

That was fun and lovely views. Windy well so long as the boat stays were you want it and you've got to make it to a point in time I would say go for it. Thanks for that film of that branch train. I am so looking into that. I notice he is in Australia as .AU means that it come from there. Thanks again Girls. Keep safe.

The electrical charge from a wind, can be partly the reason for your displeasure to travel in its charge.... some especially sailors have that nature to muster its challenge in their pleasure of sailing

I would say that me not traveling due to wind would entirely depend on the direction of the wind in relation to my intended travel destination, how strong the wind is blowing and finally how consistently. I have no problems with traveling with a lot of wind in my face(I ride motorcycles) but, a consistently strong crosswind is not something I want to fight against and would try to avoid if possible.
