Seeburg put out their famous Seeburg 1000 background music system starting in 1959, lasting until 1986. This system utilized unique background records pressed onto nine-inch, 16 2/3 rpm vinyl records, each with a two-inch center spindle hole. These were designed to be played on a unique record player that could hold twenty-five records and play both sides before moving onto the next record in the stack, rotating through them in a cycle. The idea was that you would have heard at least 1000 tunes by the time the whole stack was completed. Given that the average side is about forty minutes long, eighty minutes per record, twenty-five was more than enough to go the entire day and some without repeat.
Seeburg background records were issued on subscription, and all of them were supposed to be returned to Seeburg to be destroyed after they were rotated out. However, many of them still made it to the present, for they are akin to all those V-Discs from WW2, which were not supposed to survive past the war but are still around as a hot collector's item. One can expect to pay around ten-ish dollars per disk if one wishes to own one of these records these days.
There was a series of "libraries" that offered the subscriber various "flavors" of music. The Mood series was made for restaurants and upscale establishments; it was as lush and posh as possible. The Basic series was a little more upbeat but mostly made for shopping malls and supermarkets. The Industrial series was created for factories and is very upbeat and rather varied; by the 1970s, there was Disco. Disco eventually made it into what would be considered the Basic series, but it would change ownership to do that.
Other series were developed for the "private" market, like the Encore series (Jazz-based, very classy), the Penthouse series. In the last years of the Seeburg line, after the original company filed for bankruptcy and was bought out by another company who tried to revamp the libraries to be more "hip," they put out Lifestyle, Contemporary, and Moody Mood. The later releases are particularly coveted by collectors; their minimum going price is at least 20 dollars a record. It is a bit ironic that collectors roll their eyes at a Readers Digest easy listen set but go crazy when similar music shows up on nine-inch 16 2/3 rpm records. Ultimately, what killed these records was the trend of more and more establishments moving towards "mainstreaming" their background music, i.e., replacing it with pop music, which was considered hipper and modern Seeburg's music line stopped production in 1986, a small company called MT records put a series of compatible records for a bit. Still, then it all ended after not too many years. Even K-Mart, the last major holdout of easy-listening, instrumental heavy in-store background music, had to cave in after the end of 1988, as they went mainstream in 1989
Thus, the old record-based background music system in public spaces failed to compete with tape-based systems, and they took over. Now we have pop music being passed off as background music now when we go shopping.
Feel free to ID the tracks, and do know that I did clean up the audio with DeNoise and Click Repair, so what artifacts from the record the audio comes from are very few and far between.

I am also willing to sell my physical copies of the records I have digitized and uploaded onto RU-vid. All records are priced at $1 each, plus the costs of shipping them media mail. The only exception is for the Seeburg 16 2/3 rpm releases, the market value for those is at least ten dollars apiece, and that is pretty much what I have to pay to get ahold of any these days. Also, I was forced to drastically purge my collection multiple times between Fall 2014 and Summer 2017, so there is a good chance for videos released before or during that time to no longer possess that record in my personal physical collection to sell.

I listened to Basic BA-110A and found the start of the record contains much of the same program blocks as this album.... just a note.

Good observation. I felt like there was something familiar about the tracks. Maybe this is why this album seems sped down. Perhaps they were trying to give it a different feel without having to pay for new recording sessions

I grew up in the 80s, and still recall this playing in places like JC Penney's & Dillards. They phased it out before I got very old, missed it. My parent's hated it. They are in their 70s & 80s now, and still complain about what they term "old people music."

In the UK we would call this Test Card Music. This sort of music was played on TV throughout the day back in the 1950s, 1960s & 1970s so that TVs could be tuned & adjusted when being installed in homes. It all went when daytime programmes started.

I need to do a search on what the "Seeburg 1000" was in the day it was in use. It looks like a miniature juke box. The music is right out of childhood. We had a Kresge's Five And Dime Store within biking distance from our house that had this music going over the PA system. They had a great hobby section with model planes and even HO scale train stuff for cheap. It was a nice time.

The past seems so nice, but on the flip side, I have to remind myself to be thankful for the present, as I will miss what I can or am experiencing now, that will be but a memory nobody but my age group can say they had the chance to experience firsthand in the future at some point. Everyone can find something to grumble about today, but how interesting that in years we only remember the good with magnified fondness, and what bad there was we manage to find good out of as well... rose colored glasses they say. If I could go back to 2000 I would appreciate the simple pleasure of security, TSA not being such a pain in the butt to get through, and even economy on a 1-hour flight getting a full-on meal. I would appreciate only a small number of people on their phones, people talking to one another in public, and feeling safe enough to allow kids to play outside without supervision as long as the parents knew where they were going. People shopping at malls, the mall feeling like a magical place full of wonders and endless excitement, and all the social-economic happenings that went on there are mere hollow shells now compared to what they once were. Also, all the fast food places seemed more friendly and inviting, especially for kids. I am not sure we are better off now than we were then, it seems people, society, companies, and such were much more generous and hospitality-minded. We have all this neat tech today, but I would trade it all for the society and way of life we had back then several decades ago, and do it with a smile, knowing full well that innovation does not always mean one will live better or happier in every way possible... I would not grumble about having to wait for the pictures to develop, rewinding the VHS tape, having to call hotlines for information about what was playing at the local theater, manually keeping a balanced checkbook, and such.

The problem with the Seeburg library of background music is that it was of inconsistent quality. Some of the records and tunes had great tunes and were well produced with full orchestras with strings. Some came from Capitols music library. Later they switched to Rca. Some of the music they began including was lazy and featured minimal instrumentation with accordion prominent. I vastly prefer the beautiful lush orchestral tunes. I've even heard some tunes like "my buddy" featuring Alvino Rey on steel.guitar.

@leejenwin1937
@leejenwin1937 2 года назад
The ten second gaps are great. They help the tracks ‘flow’ notwithstanding their variety. They kind of leave you time to anticipate what the next track might sound like as well as a few seconds to reflect on the track that just finished! Cantata 700 also incorporated 10s (average) gaps between songs which works nicely.

I remember when this music,as well as other background music that sometimes consisted of production music library tunes,was being played everywhere. Shops,supermarkets,restaurants,etc. Then starting sometime in the 1980's businesses began playing modern trash off the radio in the background,I guess in an attempt to be "hip" or cheap and it's gotten worse since then. The music they play in stores now literally annoys me to the point of driving me out of the store as fast as possible.

It is rather odd. This 'boring' old stuff is richer than newer music in every objective way. Melody, harmonies, variations in instruments, song structure, etc. It is actually more complex, more engaging. This is the default music of the past - it was the norm. The intruder was the harsh rock (for lack of a better term) that was the music for energetic, hormonal kids. Now we have nothing. I blame the Beatles. (jk)

Yeah, it is shameful what passes for pop music these days... we have as a society digressed in that regard

IMHO this music died because it was originally played during uncomfortable situations. As a result, when your average Joe heard this, he was reminded of waiting rooms in dentist offices, banks, and doctor's offices. Instead of calming people, it just raised their anxiety. The only reason this is no longer the case is because of the passage of time. The younger generations never developed that association since it was before their time. Older generations connect the music more strongly to general nostalgia than those original unpleasant instances from way back when.

This makes sense

I don't know anybody who felt anxiety about this music. It was used also for restaurants, department stores, etc. It never died. It was replaced with light pop music, i.e., Chicago.
