Steph dear, I jut absolutely love your style and your work ethic! I learned winter sowing from you and did it my first time. I planted 67 jugs and all but 2 have germinated so far. I spent last week planting seedlings outside in my grow bags that I use for my gardening. I am 75 and live alone, so gardening is my passion, along with crocheting. I definitely want to try those gorgeous Atomic Purple Gomphrenas. I actually am planting a lot of purple veggies and flowers this year. I even have purple hair! And I wear purple all the time. You should see the purple suede cowboy boots I got from “me to me” for my birthday in January. Anyway just wanted to let you know I really love your channel. 💜💜💜💟💟💟✝️✝️✝️

Grew them last year. They were PHENOMENAL. They were workhorses. Blooming... And blooming... And blooming. Even in this little sqaure pot on my steps, they needed little care, in pots with other plants they seemed to play well together... But this year I am doing red ones in the ground, and I expect even less work and watering for those ones! Happy growing! Be sure if your Gomphrena has hairnseeds to pull as much of that hair away as possible. I have noticed those seeds don't germinate as well if the fuzz if left on. 🥂

My first year starting gomphrena / having it in general (if all goes well!) I started atomic purple, fiery sunset, salmon pastel, and mandarin! I’m hoping they do well. Only a few have come up, some colors haven’t come up at all. Probably my fault, but I did soak seeds for 36-48 hrs beforehand.

Learning a lot from your videos. I'm from Massachusetts too but moved to Houston 3 years ago. I knew what grew and thrived in the northeast but gardening here has been a straight up learning curve. Few colorful flowers will survive the hot, humid, and very long Houston summers, oh but I discovered and absolutely fell in love with gomphrenia last year. Let me tell you, those vibrant purple posies embedded in a large white pot were striking all summer long and brought me so much joy. I grew the QIS globe amaranth variety that I think I found at Lowe's. Couldn't find them this year so trying my hand at growing then from seed. I did plant them into little cells and they've been growing nicely since it's already well into the 80s and 90s here. Please keep your posts coming!

Girl, you have changed my life big time! I used the winter sowing method I learned from you in January this year and I have lettuce coming out of my ears! So far, everything I’ve used this method with has done spectacularly. I will be starting flower seeds this weekend. I fertilize my seedlings once a month using fish emulsion. Thanks to you, I have had so many seedlings to share. I need to look for some of that gomphrena. It’s an amazing addition to the garden. Continued blessings…daisy

Steph, thank you for providing such great quality content - educative, entertaining and always so delightful to watch! BIG CONGRATS on over 7.5 million views! I've started some perennials from seed this year inspired by your garden: snowy spires verbascum, golden jubilee hyssop, lady's mantle and yarrow. Purple gomphrena looks beautiful in your garden but unfortunately I don't have any space left this season. I use Neptune's Fish and Seaweed Fertilizer but not on zinnia seedlings. They just don't need it. Thanks for all you do! Love your channel!

Hi Steph, you should have a really nice outcome! I have all my winter sewing to start on tomorrow and Saturday hopefully. Our February was warmer than it is now so I’m purposefully taking my time and enjoying the process. I did kind of go overboard on houseplants though and so I’ll also be reporting those up. But it’s what we love, right? 😁 I do love gomphrena but it is not on my list for this year, However I did grow it last year.

We had same weather and I did only a few WS and put on east side of house because last year it was too warm of winter and then the cold snap. They either froze or rotted. So I’m doing more inside seeds because I don’t trust WS because of temps. However, the last couple weeks have been below average. It’s more of a spring sow here.

Love your channel and your gardens, as well as your advice in my local zone (Metrowest MA). I first learned of winter sowing from your video and may try it tomorrow with some seeds I need to sow. I already have too many seedlings for my space yet I'm about to sow more seeds! (Some of us just can't help it...) Need to set up my outdoor solar station soon on my deck, using some clear plastic the painters left behind; I may have to move seedlings indoors if it gets too cold, but it usually gets me through a frost and lets those faster-growing or cold-tolerant plants get a head start. (I'm thinking of my large seedlings of a gorgeous annual giant salvia from seeds I saved last year - they're almost too large to keep inside but they're too tender for the cold.) Best of luck to all of us gardeners this year!

Hey Steph, again love your video. I also start seeds in my basement by starting geraniums and onion seeds in January. I also start other seeds like foxglove and lavender, but have recently discovered I'm doing stratification incorrectly. I too would put my seeds in the fridge or the freezer thinking that was enough, but according to Garden fundamentals gardening expert said to properly stratify a seed it must be in contact with moisture. In order to do that he put the seeds on a damp paper towel then put the paper towel containing the seeds inside a labeled a Ziploc bag and then put them in the refrigerator for the required amount of time. I did not do that to my foxglove and always wondered why I never got results instead just ended up throwing my seeds out side in my garden. I look forward to seeing the results of all your winter sewn containers, and as always will continue watching in anticipation what will be your next Garden Adventure. Keep up the great work

Good morning! I started three types of geraniums from seed back in January and had almost 100% germination! The plants are looking wonderful (potted them up to larger containers about 6 weeks ago). Several are now sporting flower buds and will be a great addition to my porch pots and hanging baskets. And will have saved me so much money! I've never grown Gomphrena - or even heard of it until recently. I decided to start it by seed and am having marginal success. One particular variety that I was really looking forward to has had very poor germination. The other two had much better germination but are not growing STRAIGHT, even though I have them right under grow lights. Very odd... Like you, I ordered MORE seeds to start even though it's a bit late for me in zone 8b. Included in my "more" order is Baker Creek Gomphrena in SALMON, so we'll see if it does better than the seeds I ordered from other seed companies. I didn't know to soak them so I will do that with this new group. Thanks for the info!

I really like it, along with the everleaf emerald tower basil variety because unlike Genovese and lettuce leave varieties, they aren't so quick to start flowering. I hope yours flowers for you the way you want it to, but if it doesn't, you should at least be able to get some batches of pesto out of it LOL

I ordered purple gum seeds per your recommendation, but have already killed all of them😲. this is my first time trying to start seeds and it’s not for lack of purchasing things that they’re not working out because I have a heat mat and grow lights but I’m really unsure on how to water. I thought someone said not to leave them sitting in water because they would get too wet, but it looks like that’s what you’re doing and maybe I just didn’t water them enough. I’m gonna give it another try because they’re so pretty. I can do this!!😂

4:53 I was always told that the cold stratification had to take place with moist substrate, or in water. I put my seeds in water, then freeze, thaw, feeze, thaw, freeze, thaw... Usually a week of that and every plant I've done that with has germinated! Looking forward to see how it works for you, or if you have had success in the past! Edit: I hate how autocorrect switches correctly spelled words... Yes, I meant 'in water' because I typed it, autocorrect!!! 😂

Wonderful! And yes that is true. Its a combination of cold and moisture for cold stratification. I froze the seeds, and them placed them in moist soil. Your method is also great, and mimics the outdoor natural conditions. Yes, I have had success with seeds germinating after keeping them in the freezer and then sowing them. Thanks for sharing.

I love that Atomic Purple Gomphrena! And have, since I saw it in your border💜. So far, I haven't seen it available here in France tho as a seed😢. I'm an optimist, so will keep my eyes peeled when I'm out in the garden centers.... Al

Hi Al! I ordered mine from Baker Creek Seeds on Rareseeds.com. But I'm not sure that they would ship to France. I hope you can find a similar variety near you some time. I'm not sure if I've told you this before, but I love France! I'm visiting again this summer, near Toulouse. Thank you so much for watching!

My gomphrena is starting to break soil. I just loved yours so I tried it last year. I am hooked! I spent the morning potting up my petunias. I love starting and growing my own seeds.

Hi Steph! You've inspired me to start seeds this year (along with adding additional shrubs to my borders last year😉)! I have a quick question - I soaked my Gomphrena seeds (accidentally more than 48 hours) and little roots showed up on most of them! Yesterday, I put them into the seed trays anyway and have them under the grow lights with saran wrap on top until I see seedlings. Hopefully I didn't ruin them by leaving them in the water longer than I should have. eek!

Stock truly has a wonderful scent -- I have never tried them from seed, but I have bought plants. You are tempting me to plant more flower seeds -- I have several trays of salvia and gomphrena (trying the Baker Creek purple and white mix) and need to start some celosia -- that BC mix looks really great. I love the spike celosia for arrangements and drying. Plus, they are prolific bloomers once they get going. I would pinch off any incipient blooms at this point.

Great info as usual my sista!!!!! I got quite a number of hints for seeds written after this video!!!! And I didn’t buy more seeds today….but I did accidentally leave Lowes with clearance columbine plants for $2 a piece, and left aldis with some sage plants for $2.99!! ❤️❤️❤️🤪👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾

I tried starting seeds inside for the first time. I have limited space and it’s definitely a learning experience with lots of errors in the trial. My zinnia and cosmos flopped but I at least saved some seeds for direct sowing. I have a tray of snapdragons that I probably used too many seeds per cell ( so stinking small). They have sprouted but they are thin and some are flopped. I also started some four o’clock and those have tall sprouts and are starting to flop. I’m going to try repotting since most have a second set of leaves and see what happens 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I just try and learn
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 5 месяцев назад
Hi Cynthia, Sometimes when they flop it could be that they are getting too much water. It could be something called dampening off where the stem starts dying off and then will flop over. Check for moisture, its one possibility. Hope this helps. We're always learning, doing is the only way to learn. Great job, keep growing 🌱

Great video. I have never started flowers from seed. So this year I want to try using my Greenstalk vertical planter and put in seeds. I don't have any indoor growing trays, lights, green house, etc. I'm in planting zone 7B. Can I directly sow the seeds into my planter when the time is correct for my zone? Or do you always have to start seeds indoors? Thank you for your videos.

Hey lady! Today I got a basket at TJ max so I can mimic your porch style (yes, I got grey!!). Not sure what to do for a grow bag though. I got a fabric storage bag from the dollar tree and might try that but realized when I opened it that it is plastic lined. Is there a particular brand or type of grow bag you prefer for your nice baskets?
