Coffee, plants, and the ever familiar “Hey guys, how’s it going.” Given the ever changing and chaos that social media seems to make feel constant, it’s lovely to have this joyful, kind, and plant-filled corner of the internet to start the day and listen to while I get going for the day. Have a blessed day Garden Answer peeps (and Lauren, Aaron, Benjamin, and Samantha) 🥰
Aaaah a nice long video! Folks just don't understand how valuable a good seedling video with plenty visuals really is. Totally guilty with trying to convince myself that I can remember a plant that I haven't tagged. Thanks Laura!
I laughed when Laura gave us the timelines! When I sit to watch a video from Garden Answer I am usually ready for a break and Coffee and always watch the whole video and then want more. Keep up the great videos
Gotta have a sense of humor with this weather.. we’re just participants 🤣 so it’s an escape to watch these videos which offer promise of spring bounty!
This might be a basic level question, but you learn by asking :) Can you speak to the light requirements of the seedlings in the greenhouse vs. seedlings under grow lights. If your grow lights need to be close to the seedlings to prevent leggy growth, what prevents leggy growth in the greenhouse?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA When Laura reached the end of the bench where the fig and maple were, I thought “oh that’s it for this video!” Then I heard Laura said “…and on the OTHER side we have….”It’s like discovering a whole new season of Netflix show after you thought was the finale. Thanks Laura, I know your inspiration goes beyond the gardening community. Gardening is so good for the soul, it makes you believe in tomorrow, and all the hard work you put out not knowing what will come from them, but the faith and hope we instill in ourselves through the act of growing something is way more impactful than the plants themselves. You need to take a moment and just feel proud for what you and Aaron have accomplished.
The family owned greenhouse down the street from me just opened for the season. Within 2 minutes of talking to the employees, we were all swooning over Garden Answer. We learn so much from you Laura! Thank you and your family for being in our lives. We love you all.
New Gardner in Ohio: watching you work with your seedlings 🌱. I realize how much I miss my seedlings. My cancer has returned, but I will be working with plants this year. Gardening just does feed my soul.
Thanks so much for showing your “real life” patio furniture storage solution!! I often feel I’m failing because of the unwieldy state of my home/garage/garden. But it is helpful to see that life affects us all & sometimes we have to be creative with the space we have. -My hometown pastor used to quote Proverbs (14:4) “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” So I guess when we consider the abundance of our harvest and all the other things we achieve, it makes sense that the space around us isn’t always picture perfect. And it’s worth it. 😊
We had snow for about 8 hours straight yesterday here in Southern Minnesota 4b, only a dusting actually stuck around until this morning, its all gone now but windy up to 50-60 mph now! Can't wait to get some of my plants out of my garage and into the ground!
☕️Good day to all from Michigan where snow is forecasted for today, so a day off work and hot coffee is as welcome as Laura in the greenhouse! Just Beautiful plants and seedlings, Laura, I marvel at how you keep track of it all. Have a great new week everyone 🌷🌸🌼👏🏻
Finally! I can show my husband that even Laura has a crap pile! Ha! Love the reality. Who has time to put everything away when we have plants to take care of.
It's been a few days since I've watched a Garden Answer video and it feels like catching up with an old friend. I so appreciate and love your videos Laura! I know many like me enjoy drinking our coffee with you in the mornings. Cheers to a great day in the garden! (Or greenhouse 😊)
I may be the only one but after Laura thin out and repotted the plants, I felt I could breathe easier while looking at the repotted plants and their forner abodes sitting side by side to each other. 😄
Thinning and Separating segment is EXCELLENT! I always struggle with that, afraid to damage them and always having to throw some out. Starting at 27:00 Thank you!
I love when Laura miss pronounces some of the plant names! It makes her feel more relatable to me, lol! There are sooo many weird ass names for plants and they are all spelled crazy! And then don’t even get me started on a plants real name, I think it’s Latin or something like that, but they are super hard words to spell and pronounce. I have the hardest time spelling and trying to pronounce all of the names. You gotta give her credit though, Laura has so many plants names to remember and most of the time, she spits them out like a boss!
Laura getting excited over the little baby bean is one of the most relatable gardener reactions. No matter how little or how much you grow, there’s always that excitement when the first baby veggies start emerging! 🥰
You’re so blessed to have such a green house. Ugh, I would live there. This year will be my second garden. I can’t believe it’s taken me all these years to find this amazing hobby. I think a greenhouse may be in my future. 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Then this one popped up 😃 You have definitely come into your style of recordings, gained wonderful confidence in who you are and what you represent, and yet you have kept the sweet signature marks and your sweet self through the years. Thank you for teaching me so much!
Laura i have been enjoying your content for a couple years now. It has always called to mind my early days in my career that started at a greenhouse and garden center. I loved that job. Even still I went on in the direction of floral design. But now you have inspired me so much that I have made the decision after 25 years in floral to return to the greenhouse environment. I am so grateful & excited to get 'back to my roots'! Heres to playing in the dirt again! Thanks for your continued inspired content! All the best to you and your beautiful family! ♡
I was thinking the same thing! I was actually looking up different videos about thinning and separating when I remembered to check the GA channel and here it was!
I’m so glad to see an update of your seedlings! When I watched your planting videos, it got me so excited so I did mine. It’s so funny to hear you welcome the snow as we in 6b NW Pennsylvania are so over it! Your Easter video with your family yesterday was incredibly precious. Benjamin and Samantha are very well loved! Thank you for sharing!
I wish I was as plant savvy as Laura. She really inspires me. I’ve always wanted to grow my own vegetable and flower garden but have never had the opportunity. Watching her and her family gives me hope that I can get there one day. For right now I been having a two month dilemma on what kind of houseplant I should start my gardening adventures with. Complete beginner is a level above where I’m at lol. Any advice or suggestions anyone? They would be appreciated 🙂
Hey Laura! My first year having a little greenhouse in my basement went so well thanks to all your videos, that I couldn't wait to do it again this year. I made some rookie mistakes, but for the most part it was a success. I have some questions I was hoping you could answer of concerns I am currently having. Some of what I am growing out of 16 trays includes petunias, double impatiens, celosia, amaranth, eucalyptus, poppies, aster, and other annuals. FERTILIZING: I fertilize on Sundays. 1-Should I fertilize from the top like you did in this video? I usually water from the bottom tray. 2-I'm so confused about the yellow leaves I get on random plants in the trays. Should I be giving it less water or more of a specific nutrient like nitogen? The temp in my basement is consistly 70 degrees and have 2 fans for circulation. PINCHING: 3-If the plant card doesn't state to pinch, should I not pinch or does it matter if I do it to any annual? 4-Would pinching weaken or kill an annual? 5-I noticed on some annuals, the cotyledon leaves shriveled up and others seem strong. Can or should these be clipped off at some point? 6-Is it necessary to transplant from seed starting mix to potting mix if they are in a big enough container till they can be moved outside? 7-Should I be moving my trays around to give different airflow or lighting or just leave them where they are the whole time? I h ew are somewhere you should rotate them once a week. 8- for the impatiens being a shade plant, when do I stop putting them under the light or how do I transition shade annuals for greenhouse lighting? I can't get them outside till mid-to-end May being in a zone 5. Thank you for all your hard work to educate us all!! Lindsey G. Chilton, WI
Good start to the week with Laura. Burning bushes are a staple in our landscapes in my region of Missouri. They are beautiful in the fall, I highly recommend them. Also just FYI...I spray aphids with a mixture of Castle Soap and water. They usually never return.
So happy you got Phomis. It's one of the most beautiful perennials, having year round interest. Must not be deadheaded until spring since the seedheads are spectacular and super strong, persisting through snow and wind.
Hello From Texas - great information here, and the beauty that the Lord has provided for us is beyond any word I can express. Everything abundant, each one different.....what a marvel to see these things. Thank you for your time and hard work. Love to you and your family, and hugs to the little ones.
absolutely love the seedling updates! Really makes me feel better to know everyone has different seedling results. As a brand new gardener, it's sometimes hard not to compare results with pros like garden workshop who have the whole process dialed in.
Getting so close to the full swing of planting season, I cant wait! I'm so excited!!! To see how everything turns out on your end and to start on my end. Darn weather 🙄
The seeds from Australia did no come from me, the Sturt Desert Pea plants hate to have there roots disturbed and only like to be watered from underneath. They are so suited to your environment as the only difference between where they grow in Australia and your climate is, our summers get hotter and your winters are colder, we don’t have the snow. Good luck with your seeds. I loved all your seedlings and hope mine look as good. Have a wonderful day x
I get the kangaroo paw plants from our nursery in the fall, but they always seem to dry up . Any suggestions? I’m in Phoenix Arizona, USA and we’re desert 🏜 here.
Underwatering them prevents a lot of diseases, before I moved house I never watered mine very often. This was because the area it was planted in the ground was well worked, so kept the plant roots moist but not wet. I also used to just run a slow hose (never had a drip system in) near it twice a week in the heat of the summer. Only once a month in the winter if no rain.
How can u send seeds,, without going thru agricultural inspection.... That's how invasive species get going ... UGH... Know u meant well but think again.... Sorry
I had amazing luck with lavender starting seeds in the water jug Method. All of them came up strong. I planted 5 seeds per jug. It was so exciting since I’d like to plant a hedge of them it is such a cost effective way too
One of the best videos. Broke it up in three digestible sittings and not angry about it at all. U really covered a lot of things from bulbs to splitting to transplanting to germination troubleshooting, etc. So thannnk you.
Yep I did learn something, I repotted my small little seedlings way to early. Also I have a heart that just can’t thin the plants out but I have very little room and grow light space to separate them 😩. Oh the dilemmas that I have come into 😆. But this did help me a lot to understand the next stage I need to do. Thank you Laura!!
Great video, been a subscriber for almost 2 years. I mostly grow veg and herbs but great to see all your plant life. I especially love to see companion plants and propagator attractors. Thanks.
Good Morning! 🌞 The 2022 planting/growing season is going to get busier once the weather shapes up! Everything looks amazing in the greenhouse! I am anxious to get outside & start my season, I have started clean up in between weather systems! 😃🌧🌨🌩🌬🌞🌱🌷
This gave me a great example on how to separate, thin, and potting up. I haven't grown much from seed and this helps to give me confidence to try more this year.
If you like the dose caps on Espoma's liquid fertilizers, hang onto them! I emailed the company when I noticed my local garden centers selling them with a different cap, and they said they've discontinued the dose caps because people found them confusing. Huge bummer because it's so much easier and cleaner to use. Luckily the thread is the same, so I just transfer the dose caps onto the new bottle.
Thank you for the update!! I was getting discouraged with some of my seedlings but seeing yours doing the same is encouraging. My cup and saucer vines last year (2 ) 4in pots grew over 15 feet tall!!!! They were massive!!!!! Love you videos!! ❤️🌸🌼🌺
Love the greenhouse tour ! I practically grew up in a greenhouse my parents had a retail business for 30+ years . Wondering if you run a circulating fan it would benefit your seedlings . Also so curious if your milk jug plantings made it ? I don’t have a greenhouse so keep experimenting with the milk jug method, I’m finding my cool weather perennials do the best . I had less then 50% success this season 🥴 🤷🏻
So helpful to see the seedlings progress! I've been watching for many years and I finally have the time and confidence this year to start seeds indoors this year. I've learned so much from your seed successes and learning opportunities thank you!!
I've been...somewhat patiently...waiting for this video. No mention of the blue poppy, guessing it hasn't gone well.? Really looking forward to seeing the new gardens over this summer. Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead, just the right amount of rain, no snow for me here on the shore in Maryland....YAY.
Laura, for those of us with smaller growing spaces that can only support one or two tomato types/plants, and of all those you have grown thus far, which varieties would you recommend above others? Which variety do you look forward to most?
I've never grown edibles, but I'm doing an experiment this year. I'm creating 4 self watering containers out of 5 gallon buckets and after much research these are the varieties I'm trying out: Sugar Plum F1 Tomato (my sister likes grape tomatoes so that's what I'm going for this first time--good for snacking and salads); Bilbo Hybrid Carrot (a smaller Nantes type); Patio Snacker Cucumber (an American slicer bred to do well in containers); and Seychelles Green Bean (which I've seen others growing in a similar situation). Wish me luck.
@@Ibis333 sounds great 👍 I'm going with 5 & 7 gallon felt bags. This is a 1st for me planting edibles so I'm cautiously optimistic. I can upgrade once I feel confident. We have a small farm here that sells a potted cherry tomatoe we love. I'm going to get 1 of those plants. I have hot scotch bonnet pepper plants, green onions, walla walla onions, lettuce, Thyme, basil & shallots. I definitely want to add 2 more tomatoes plants. I do enjoy beefsteak tomatoes. I noticed Laura plants garden treasure but I'm curious what her favorite of all tomatoes plants she has is. I've been concerned about the numerous recalls on lettuce especially over the last 2yrs & I've decided to plant some outside & I'll have some indoors too. I imagine more people are planting their own edibles because of supply chain issues too. I just received my felt pots today & now I need to get some potting soil. I never thought planting seeds & sets could be so much fun but I'm learning & enjoying so far. I wish you great success with your veggie garden! ☺️🌱👍🙏
Love seeing all your seedlings!! It’s so nice to know ,even the Experts struggle sometimes, I Love how you keep it real and show the not so good, along the way ❤Thank you for your guidance, I’ve learned so much from you!
I love to take care of my seedlings. I don't have much space and I always have too many plants but I don't care. When I'm repotting my seedlings I'm in my happy place. 🌱❤
I wish I could afford a green house. I use the winter sowing method and start seeds by bringing them in and out and covering everything when it’s going to be cold. Such a pain in the ass. Worth it though. 😅
I find it reassuring when you point out both successes and failures, as I have trouble growing lavender from seed, for example. These videos remind me to do some fertilizing and point out when it is time to pot up a tray of seedlings also. This is my first year with a small hobby greenhouse and I have been pleased with results so far, but there is always room for improvement! Thanks for doing such a great job of showing us techniques as well as sharing your enthusiam with us! Now if I just had the amount of space for more trays that you do.....
I got ONE Cherokee sunset rudbeckia to germinate. I also had a hard time with my asters (Johnny’s tower custom mix). It was very helpful with my asters to start in the papers towel
Good morning! I will be separating seedlings today, hardest thing for me to watch was the cutting back of the columbine...lol. Over here, mid atlantic, i had to cover my citrus trees last night, and probably tonight also, cold snap coming through. But it is whacky spring weather. But I LOVE SPRING. Happy growing plants y'all!
Another RU-vid channel has a much smaller hoop house. He was looking for a heating option for the winter. After trying a few things he purchased an inflatable hot tub. It provided the heat he needed and the recreation is a bonus.
That was so helpful and timely! I am just in the midst of tons of seedlings at different stages and You gave me the confidence and knowledge to properly and optimally care for them and move them forward. As a new gardener, you help shorten that ever painful learning curve. 😁 You intuitively know what we need and how to present it. I am so grateful for you and all you do every day. My garden is therapy, exercise, and sustenance all of which have become ESSENTIAL in my life. My plans, even work sometimes 😳, come in a distant second place 😅. ☮️ 💟
Love this video looking at Seed germ and Troubleshooting seedlings - really helps my seed growing journey seeing your seedlings, care schedule and processes when encountering any issues and potential causes! ❤️
Thank you, Laura! Amazing overview of your flower seedlings: Thorough and full of useful information. Encouraged me (🇬🇧) to resow flowers that failed to germinate. Fantastic greenhouse!
At 32:36 all I can hear is the poor little seedlings scream as they are beheaded. And that dear Laura is why I have 27 dill, 24 sage and one full try of parsley! I can’t bring myself to do it, but I’m working on it. Thanks for the education on seed starting
Funny my place looks like that my family calls me “” a hoarder but when they need something or want something on the fly who do they call and come to me strange huh? Lol. Love you reality.
Myself and my wife absolutely adore you, and appreciate you sooo much. You have done more than you know helping us to get our gardens and beds in order. True blue fan.
My Cherokee Sunset looks the same as Laura’s, so I don’t feel too bad. This is the second year starting it for me, with the same results both years!🤷🏻♀️ bought the seed from Johnnys too. I’m happy with a couple plants. Such a pretty cut flower, once I figured out the correct time to cut them🤦🏻♀️
I don't have a place to do seeds but did buy 2 4x6 little covered planters. I put small sunflower seeds in one and morning glory seeds in the other. I put 2 seeds in each hole. ALL the sunflowers germinated but only a few of the morning glory seeds that I got from a friend. I'm so excited.
Laura, watching you take care of these plants is like sitting in on a Master Gardening Class. I know I speak for many, we learn soo much by watching your videos. Thanks for the knowledge. Looking forward to seeing how all these plants beautify your landscape.
I didn’t see your Lisianthus. Did I miss them? I was curious how yours are doing. I planted some in January and they are still so tiny! Wondering when they will start showing growth. So excited for them!
I also planted some in Jan and they are still very small too. They were the same last year, but then really started to grow when I transplanted outside in the later spring (I'm in Minnesota) and flowered beautifully. I'm sure yours are fine, they just stay small for a very long time.
Speaking of berries, did you pull the runners from the raspberry beds? I was so interested to see that they do that with such vigor only a year after being planted in those beds 👌🏼
When I noticed the back of my trays drying out faster I checked the level of my tables. Put a level on and low and behold the backside was higher so the water flowed forward.
Good morning, Laura☕️ Wow; you are such an inspiration! I have such a small area to grow seedlings 🌱 but, I’m following along with you and this video is exactly what I needed! Is it a MUST to thin them, or can you just directly plant outside? Weather permitting obvi. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
👋🏻 Good morning! Great to see all the seedlings popping up! It’s probably more visual on the video than in person, but the yellowing is due to the uneven table tops that the trays are sitting on. You can see it pretty good with the snapdragons. At 21:12 you can see where the water pools in the tray is where it’s most yellow. Hope this helps, have a great day!
5:31 As a longtime gardener of mostly veggies (like 6 acres), I’m enjoying your videos while recuperating (and watching your cat using your newly filled trays as a litter box!) . One reason your trays aren’t sprouting evenly is the temp is much higher next to the walls of the greenhouse. If needed, you can rotate the trays but that’s a lot of work! Also, seeds are really important on where they are from. I think there’s only 10 or 12 seed companies growing their own seeds - the rest are purchased in bulk from giant seed companies, so you’ll get a huge variety of germ. On our farm I used to track what I seeded and from which company. I found one company (Baker Creek) was the worst germ overall; Fedco and Seeds From Italy were two of the best.
