Seeds to Sow in October | Seed Sowing in October | Vegetable Seed Sowing | Green Side Up
Lettuce varieties sown today that I recommend for this time of the year.
Red Grenoble,
Rougette Du Midi,
Black Seeded Simpson,
Reine Des Glace.
You can also sow Rocket, Winter Purslane and spinach too for extra salad leaves. All of the asian greens can be sown now and include Pak Choi, BokChoi, Tatsoi, Mizuna and Mibuna, these just to name a few and any of the mustards also.
Brassicas are worth a shout too as they germinate and start growing at very low temperature right down to 3-4 degrees and above, so collies, cabbage Kales and Chard etc etc.

Great tip about making notes for the beginner gardener. I got myself a notebook when I first started gardening and did just that. Wrote down date of planting what I planted and brief comments every couple of months about how things were doing. Plus harvest notes as well. I was able to work out what worked best for me and over the years have avoided so much disappointment. Also made weather notes as well. Amazing how things have changed over the last few years. Winter gardening is definitely a doer provided you give the plants a bit of protection. Even if they are slow because it is cold, they race ahead in early spring. Love growing coriander and lettuce over winter. Didn't think it was possible until a few years ago. Keep those videos coming. They are great.😊

Hey Steve As per usual such a very informative and useful video. I think your comment right at the beginning of your video about the time scales for crops and the info regarding frosts is invaluable. I love your enthusiasm, it's so encouraging and at the same time your honesty about 'mother nature' is so so on the ball and puts it all into perspective. I've just sown (some of) my garlic today and hope that next year I dont get hit with rust like this year!! Thanks again Steve for another fabulous video. From a true fan and friend Phil

You do a great job Steve i only grow a few overwintering crops but look forward to retiring from work in a couple of years' time and going for it 100% over winter my trouble now is i work six days a week as a grave digger and go to and from work in the dark over winter and my allotment is miles away from my home the only day i get with winter daylight is a Sunday and if anything has to be done at home it has to come first. I'm not moaning because the months when i get to allotment after work with daylight gives me so much pleasure
@GreenSideUp
@GreenSideUp Год назад
Are there no allotment sites closer to your home Lawrence?...Steve...🙂
@ballysillanallotment-man5793
@@GreenSideUp yes there is Steve I had one but as I got more into allotment growing watching growers like yourself I had to give it up and move to my present allotment at ballysillan because you where only allowed a 6ft by 4ft shed no greenhouses or polytunnels so as you can imagine I was buying plug plants more than growing from seed which to me is the best part seeing a tiny seed in your hand turning into a meal on your be plate

Hi Steve, need some advice, planted some garlic last year but had to dig them up a few months in due to moving house, I left them in my greenhouse to dry out they were very small and hadn't split I was wondering if I could cut the tops off and regrow them this year, what do you recomed I should do Thanks Kevin thompson

Hi Steve, which of your plants could you grow outside? I sowed beetroot a few weeks ago and planted them out in the raised bed (just over the border in Scotland) but the are not growing at all. Similarly carrots and land cress. They germinate but then stop. I fed and manured the bed before planting so it shouldn't be lack of nutirents. I have leeks in the same bed which are growing. Is it too cold? The bed is covered by enviromesh and I can fleece it. I planned to plant out spinach and pac choy but am now worried they wont grow either???

Hey Steve quick question, with the blow away tunnel, once the green cover is removed is it possible to place proper poly tunnel covering over it or does that not work? Thanks.

Yes, it works great i done it i made a door frame and door on one side and on the other a false door both doors have vents for air flow
@GreenSideUp
@GreenSideUp Год назад
Yes it works very well, providing your tunel frame is in good condition. There are so many companies making these cheap "blowawys" now and some use good components, others are not so good and the frames rust...Steve...🙂
