Seeing Las Vegas from Arizona via the Lake Mead Mine Roads

Las Vegas was once part of the Arizona Territory, but now it sits firmly in Nevada. Even though Arizona can no longer lay claim to Nevada's biggest city, there is still one place that you can drive to in Arizona where you can get a glimpse of the Las Vegas Strip, over 20 miles away.
In this video we head to the Arizona portion of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and travel into the park's backcountry by way of some old mine roads to get to Indian Pass, where you can get a view of Sin City.
Along the way we will pass through Petroglyph Wash, see the remains of a number of old mines, and see numerous helicopters ferrying people between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

Thank you for another epic adventure in some very out of the way part of America. For a lot of Americans who follow Steve, I'm in New Zealand and find his videos excellent for showing the real America. Not the typical tourist trap places like L A city, the empire state building etc. Steve shows the small places that miss the tourists and has more history. I've said it before and keep saying it, Steve is an excellent tourist guide

Thanks for reminding me of a place I had forgotten about. Forty years ago the Old Mine Road (as we called it then) was where a group of us from Orange County would camp out often and the views of Las Vegas down the mountain were just a bonus. It does get awfully windy at night though and somewhere down that hill are the remains of several tents I had back then. Great video Steve and keep up the good work!
@arthurlevine1840
@arthurlevine1840 7 месяцев назад
I wonder if being from Orange County is germaine to the fact that you left litter in the desert.
@jonathanmccool2871
@jonathanmccool2871 7 месяцев назад
@@arthurlevine1840 I do NOT condone littering in any way but at the same time when I was camping at the lookout during the Reagan administration I was not entirely in my right mind (as was most of the friends I was with). And when a 40 mph gust of wind blows an old Army surplus pup tent into a deep canyon at 3 AM and shreds it to small pieces I’m sorry for being disinclined to retrieve said tent in a timely manner. I’m sure that in the intervening years the cotton canvas has become one with the desert and the odd brass grommet would be overlooked in a close inspection. So please step down from your high horse and move on from my inadvertent covering of the Lake Mead area with cast off fabrics.

This vid made me extra homesick! As a former resident of Henderson and a landscape photographer, I've spent countless hours exploring Mead and the vicinity. I was so in love with the area that I even took a job at the ferry for a while. One day, some day, after my services as a caregiver here in LA are no longer needed, I'm making a beeline for home. Thanks for the trip down memories lane!

A very enjoyable adventure! While the circumstances were vastly different, this reminds me of looking at NYC from the Newark airport while on a very boring two.hour.layover waiting for our plane to Germany. A relative has petroglyphs at their property in east El Cajon; had people from the Museum of Man out to look at them. Supposedly made with insect blood, they were on the protected side of a large boulder down by the creek; a bit the opposite, with dark red/brown writing on light colored stone. What was extra special about the views you filmed, was the snow on the mountains behind Las Vegas. And always appreciate your humor. :)

OT but I hope this might create a few smiles: As someone with mild hearing loss, I always use Closed Captions. Often they struggle to get the correct words (it's incredible it gets as much as it does correctly!), & sometimes it produces some humorous results! In this video, the Captioning frequently labeled it "Lake Me", including the statement "Lake Me is a very popular park" 😁😂

You had me stumped where you had trekked to when you last mentioned you were on "Cohencur Loop Road" but were "nearing the end". Oh well, some good map work and I finally had your end point. I really appreciate your videos, just the right length of time, just enough information, you take on the video subject, and not all about you like many, many tv hosts wannabes. If I’d have to find a slight negative, and real slight at that, just remember that your videos are watched worldwide, so a slightly more details on the place ( and that’s only an observation on a couple, not all of them) might be better. For example, I’m in Montreal, Canada. Keep up the great work

Great video! An upcoming divorce and retirement is causing me to rethink my stay in California, it is just too damn expensive to retire and "live" in California. Kingman, AZ is high on my list of places to move to, so watching your videos help me get a better feel of the area. Of course I am not moving blind to Mohave County, I have been to Laughlin and Lake Havasu plenty of times and know about the heat. For me, I think a dual sport motorcycle would also be a good way to explore this area. There are plenty of things to do and places to explore in this part of Arizona, I just need to remind myself it's not Southern California. For crowds and traffic Las Vegas is only 1.5 hours away or 5 hour train ride away to Disneyland. Thanks again for posting this video, great work!

Very cool adventure! I was laughing thinking I remember being on that road almost 50 years ago.... 😆!! Of course, then as a preteen, our family's objective was one of the few landings on the Arizona side of Lake Mead for camping, fishing, and boating "stuff" on the Lake! It was a great time! There was a couple of dune buggies around and we'd all drive around the area of the Lake...we didn't get to where you were. I remembered the road/trail names. I have to say, going there and camping out in JUNE/JULY 🔥🥵🔥... staying in the COOL Lake Mead water took precedent several times over three summers😅!! Like you said, Then as now, we hardly ever saw anyone else, except for hardcore native Arizonians like us, and the USFS people running around, managing the camping spots and boat ramps right at the Lake. It was strange over Fourth of July with open campsites All around and, LINES of people who were trying to get in at all the "popular" spots..... This is why we went to this area. There was a trade-off back then: if you ran out of ice and food (two full weeks of staying is a long time..) you had to grab your ice boxes and drive back to civilization and provision up again and drive back out. Not a big deal but just inconvenient 😊! Thanks for making that drive, Steve!!! Mmmmm....🤔 For some reason I have this taste for fresh fried catfish, cubed fries, Ranch Beans and salad! I'll wait for the water to come up a little bit more...😆!
