I show how to make an oscilloscope from an old cathode ray tube (CRT) television. There are so many projects with old TVs, so I picked my favorite!

So in essence, you can store video on Audio Cassettes and then use the waveform patterns of both channels to draw pictures on an Osciloscope or Tube TV.

Great video! The horizontal and vertical deflection coils were made to operate at different frequencies, so their sensitivity makes it hard to get a perfect circle

What software are you using on the pc? Isit just a function gen? And what i get confused on when trying this is where exactly the preamps go in circuit because when trying to make a music visualizer the l and r channels go to the v and h def coils but when i put a preamp in between the input and coil the thing either just causes the feedback or something to put a big line on the screen that doesnt move.. is like its moving but only on that linear axis which doesn’t differentiate anything only making the line.. when i put amps on both the channels then i cant get anything besides the dot in the middle. With no preamps i get a tiny tiny visualization which is reason for preamps.. am i amplifying the current or something or adding an unnecessary resistance to it? Hard for me to keep testing and trying crap because i wind up messing up the crt and have to get a different one which are hard to find if looking for one.. lol

I realize how late I am to the party, Do the deflection coils need to be hooked up to a R and L channel? Could I hook both coils up to one channel? Or am I risking the tube?

I’ve been tinkering around with this with a Sony watchman and haven’t yet got the signals displaying quite right and they are weak. Are you amplifying them? I think that black box on the table might be a pre amp or something ? Also one of my channels is stronger than the other. I was going to try putting some op amps in it to be able to fine tune the signal strengths

One coil has more resistance than the other. And yes that is an amplifier.
@ant0n-yt

Its as simple as Audio -> Amplifier -> SPEAKERS A to Horizontal & SPEAKERS B to Vertical If your CRT won't work, you might have a safety system on your TV wich kinda prevents this sort of mod, but you can get around it!
@SamSam-pk6nb
@SamSam-pk6nb Год назад
The resistance of the 2 coper coils are different that's why the cercle is not perfect. You need to amplify the signal in one of the them to compensate. I fink that the difference in resistance is because the screen is not square it's a rectangular. You must find the resistance of the 2 coils and calculate how much more power you need to put in the most resistant coil .

How can I decrease the scale of the oscillation, i made this with a small crt, the problem is that when i turn up the volume to moderate levels the wave move so much that is unpleasant to watch...is not aesthetic, great video dude gratings from chile 🇨🇱

I usually use a keyboard amplifier or a 2 channel audio interface and just turn the gain down accordingly on those. It's pretty key to have the audio you hear separate from the audio to create the signals, so maybe a mixer would be useful too.

I did a similar setup, but I used the internal FM amplifier of the TV instead of an external one haha

Hi maybe you can help me, I tried making something similar. I located the two separate pairs of wire for each deflection coil and soldered it to two audio jack sockets. But I came through a big issue. What I get when I turn the tv on is the initial dot in the middle but it stays super small but becomes really really crazy bright and after a few seconds i hear a pop, the display shuts and after a big static noise appears coming from the back of the tv and continues until I unplug the tv. Any ideas on what's wrong ? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@SamWestby
@SamWestby 4 года назад
Sorry I'm not sure. When I have the deflection coils unsoldered and disconnected, I see a steady white dot in the middle of my screen. My only though is something is wrong with the soldering. If you unsolder the audio jack and leave the wires disconnected, do you still have a problem?

Most likley you're using an amplifier that's too powerful. I'm using a 25W output and that seems to work fine.

@@jesusplayssaxDoesn't matter which way around they go, but make sure you don't overload it! My setup uses 25W and works fine, but too much will pop the tube.

It's not the flyback transformer that has a charge, it's the crt tube that has a charge.👍
@-ElectroMan-
@-ElectroMan- 3 года назад
Not really, since the flyback transformer must deliver a DC to the CRT, besides the internal diodes, it actually contains a smoothing capacitor of about 100 Pico-farads.

Annoyingly it's virtually impossible to get those coils to align. The coil will limit current by using power to drive the magnetic field associated with it. Inductance is an absolute NIGHTMARE to account for in analogue systems like this. My solution was just to leave the vertical coil as is, run mono audio though the faster horizontal one, then turn the electron gun 90 degrees so it looks correct. Makes for a sweet vizualiser! Just not technically an oscilloscope...
