After first riding (parts) of Webster Pass Colorado in June of 2021 on my KTM 390 Adventure, I was really itching to get back up there on the Pan America Special to see the two bikes compare to one another.
This was a solo trip traveling out Highway 285 and turning north on County Rd 60.
Taking the Pan America offroading is always an exciting experience, and offroading up Webster Pass was no exception. It's a phenomenal adventure motorcycle.
You can ride from north to south, or as I did, in reverse of that. The north side of the pass is much tamer, so you have 2 options based on your preference of tackling the techy bits going uphill or down.

What a great ride. Its funny how bikes always likes to stall in front of people. Great job with the sound and splicing in that drone footage.

Lots to fine-tune for filming, but it's been a good time. Webster was a lot of fun!

Nice riding, especially on those baby heads. You guys have a short riding season in Colorado, but what you have is epic for the time you have to ride.

I was! Definitely exciting seeing some of the landscape from the air. I'll practice positioning a bit more for follow footage in the future. It's all a learning curve...

My Skydio II just flew away on its third or fourth flight, never to be seen again! I highly recommend you stick a tile or some kind of lightweight locator on it. If I ever get another Skydio that's the first thing I'll do.

Do you carry some type of cording or wrenching device out there alone?
@exploready
@exploready Год назад
That’s a great question. To this point, I have not. Late last year I added a middle-weight ADV bike to the garage, and mix it up a bit. I’ve been riding the Tuareg a bit more for rides that I would find more questionable, but the higher passes are still snow covered in most of CO, so most everything I’ve done hasn’t been too rocky. I’m looking forward to trying to compare both bikes in an off-road capacity. I do have a Garmin InReach I travel with.

What tires are you riding on? I have Dunlop Trail Max Mission on my Pan America Special but you appear to have a more aggressive tread.

Generally had been running MotoZ RallZ or a RallZ on the rear with a Dual Venture up front

It’s interesting to hear you contrasting the PA with the 390. I have an R1200GSA and as competent as it is, I’m *constantly* thinking of downsizing. It’s amazing, but it’s such a heavy brute and it’s so easy to get in over your (my) head. I mean I have a DRZ400, too, which I dearly love, but I still toy with downsizing my GSA to a mid or mini adventure. The 390 is one of the alternatives I consider from time to time. However, I see that you’ve added a Touareg, which is also on my list (along with the KTM 890). I think it would be very interesting for you to experience a dual sport like the DRZ or a KTM 350 or 500, if you haven’t already. The light weight (everything is relative) is a game changer, as is the long travel suspension, ground clearance 18/21” wheels, etc. Also, it’s nice to see the CO landscape again. I lived in Denver for 20 years, but returned to my home state of KY a couple years ago after being away for 35 years. I’m struck by how both states are incredibly pretty but in completely different ways. One of my friends in CO does BDRs, etc, and when we trade videos we’re always struck by how different things are. He’s like “all that GREEN!” when he sees one of mine.
@exploready
@exploready Год назад
Mike- I had considered looking at a dual sport (and still may down the road). The biggest drawbacks I had were service intervals and highway/interstate stretches. I know I'll be cruising for longer stretches, and still wanted to have something I felt was comfortable and capable at speed. Enjoy KY! The green is amazing. How's the riding there?
@mike.thomas
@mike.thomas Год назад
@@exploready The only dual sports, to my knowledge, with frequent maintenance intervals are the racier KTM/Husky models, 500 and below, and I think the Honda 450L. The KTM/Husky 690/701 have pretty normal maintenance intervals, as do the remainder of the Japanese dual sports, esp the classics, like the DRZ. Not trying to push the DRZ, but I find mine to be fun on the road, state highways and smaller. It is definitely more work to ride though. Not as stable, and you have to stay on your game (esp with DOT knobbies on). It’s not super comfy, even with a Seat Concepts seat on. Just acceptable. It’s “fast enough”, but not quick. However, I can load it with camping gear and not even notice, while riding. But it has a carb and is arguably not that great for CO. Riding in KY is very fun. I think I prefer it to my CO riding experiences (back in the early 2ks, and I was road-only then). CO is expansive and austerely beautiful, whereas KY is “intimate” and wooded. Everything is closer to the road here. I thought it would be a Mecca of unpaved back roads, but I was quite wrong. Even the tiniest roads here in Central KY are generally well maintained. There is some gravel here and there, but not like I thought it would be. We generally have to go to OHV parks to get significant dirt. There is also the Ky Adventure Trail, which I think I’ll try next year, at least segments of it. That goes through Eastern KY mountains, and has plenty of dirt, mud, and gravel. There are still some fun places to ride. This is my favorite ride, and it’s about an hour away. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hs6DRSyEVEs.html (I was happy enough with the energy of this video that I never bothered to do the multi-cam edit 🤷🏻‍♂️). Edit: I see now you were responding to me suggesting the 350/500, so yeah, those guys do have the more frequent maintenance. I should have mentioned the 690/701 too, in that comment. I will add, and take it as you will, that a dealer here said the 350/500 don’t really require the super frequent maintenance if you aren’t racing them or doing hard enduro trail rides for hours every weekend 🤷🏻‍♂️. I sure would like to experience a super-light bike. Even the DRZ is pretty heavy when it’s flat on the ground!

How do you like the exhaust?
@exploready
@exploready Год назад
Hey Ryan - I initially got the SE exhaust to save weight (it's something like 40% lighter, if memory serves), and I also like how it looks. I left the DB killer in because I didn't want to be 'that guy' leaving a campground at 6am or spoil any opportunities to see wildlife...*however*, after my last service the tech was pulling the bike around and I truly didn't love the sound. I've since removed the DB killer, and really like it now. It's definitely not too loud, but it's louder and has a nicer tone to it. What exhaust are you running?

Cool video. Hard to imagine the KTM 390 not outperforming a 600lb bike in that terrain. I am sorry but there is no way in hell the Pan "is more capable" than the KTM.
@exploready
@exploready Год назад
For sure just my own experience. Not having any real dirt experience, the lens I'm looking at both bikes with may skew towards the bigger bike. The Pan Am isn't perfect, but I have been really enjoying it.
@kugangles9860
@kugangles9860 Год назад
Pan has waaaay better suspension setup/quality than the KTM 390. The 390 adventure is really just a duke 390 with some spoked wheels. Same suspension and travel length, with just a bit more ground clearance.
