IAF's Omnirole Rafales
In 'Eastern Front Airpower', Season 2, our second episode is on the Indian Air Force's (IAF) omnirole Rafales. Group Captain Abhishek Tripathi, Commanding Officer (CO) of the 101 Squadron (Sqn) at the Hasimara Air Force Station (AFS) in the Eastern Air Command (EAC) is in conversation with StratNews Global's Amitabh P. Revi. In the runup to and beyond Air Force Day on October 8, 2024, StratNews Global brings you our next series of on-the-ground interviews and documentaries from the IAF's EAC. The SNG team of Amitabh, Rohit Pandita and Aryaman Singh Negi travel to film this interview at the AFS Hasimara.
Commanding Officer, 101 Squadron
Group Captain Abhishek Tripathi, the current CO, 101 Squadron has been "part of the initial batch of the (Rafale) aircrew, and part of the fleet since its induction". His "duty is that the Falcon squadron is always ready to take on any task, whenever called upon, across the spectrum. And, to keep the cutting edge sharp". Sitting in his cockpit, he proudly tells us, "the Rafale is a state of the art, modern fighter aircraft and its unique characteristics provide it an edge over other, modern fighters in the world. The aircraft is extremely versatile. It has highly advanced avionics as well as a very good AEW system. And, the aircraft has got extremely good manoeuvrability and agility in air. Most importantly, this aircraft is capable of precisely delivering air to air as well as air to ground weapons as and when they are required to do so."
'Seek And Destroy'
101 Squadron has come a long way from the Harvard aircraft it first flew. But, the squadron crest, which has a falcon and the motto of 'Anwishyavedhi', which translates into seek and destroy perfectly exemplifies its current role too. Group Capt Tripathi outlines the different roles the Rafale can be utilised for. "The role of the aircraft is primarily air-to-air, that is, aerial defence as well as offensive air-to-air roles. And it also can carry out air-to-surface tasks. It can deliver precise munitions and long range weapons. It is an all-weather aircraft which can fly and carry out all these missions both in day as well as, night. The Rafale also has air-to-air refuelling capability by day and night.
Roles & Range
The CO has "flown for extensive durations. So the missions can be complex and can be very, very elaborate. At times, the roles are also related to electronic warfare and intelligence gathering. So as and when the situation arises, the Air Force and the squadron are flexible enough to switch roles and tasks even in the air".
Group Captain Tripathi also discusses:
*The commanding officer's role.
*The Rafales as a combat platform.
*101 Squadron's history and current role.
*How Rafales are integrated with other IAF platforms.
*Its role as an omnirole fighter.
*Synergy between human and machine.
*Rafale's radar, electronic warfare and weapons integration.
*Capabilities in a ground attack role and in countering drones.
*and India specific enhancements.

Feedback time: 1. Questions were very very generic and seemed repetitive. 2. Questions that should have been asked: - How does the Rafale compare with Chinese fighters such as the J10 or AESA equipped flankers? - What about data linking capabilities with Tejas , SU30s etc. - How does the IAF plan to work with the IN Rafales in the future? - How do they synergise operations with the Rafales in the other squadron based at Ambala. - Given that there are only 36, how carefully are these airframes used ? Can the limited numbers deter PAF and PLAAF from any misadventure? - What advantage does this aircraft give the Eastern Airpower that it didn’t have before ? Lastly, there should have been footage of pilots taking off , interviews with them ( albeit with faces being masked), training routines etc

Honestly it was very disappointing by the end of the video. There is no new piece of information that came out during the entire conversation. The questions seems to very generic and could be answered by Google. And I am sure the Group Captain is an excellent aviator and an ace fighter pilot (I mean he wouldn't be in that position if he isn't that good), but his answers were far too generic and simple just like the questions.

What an incredibly proud feeling and honour it must be to command such a top notch squadron and its obviously well earned. One thing that comes through so glaringly listening to the CO is how tremendously professional the entire IAF is, not alone only just the elite squadron under his command. One wishes that other organisations, departments and administrative units of government could come to become even a little fraction as competent.

@@RishavChaudhary-zt9bk I don't have to tell the truth Google is enough to find the truth. 1. After the balakot strike why didn't IAF release the footage. Because they missed. Satellite pictures after the strike clearly only a small part of the bunkar was destroyed. So the mission failed. 2. Why wasn't the IAF in high alert after balakot, did they forgot that PAF also has an air force and there gonna be a counterstrike. 3. Why only a Mig-21 was in the air when PAF incursion happened and why didn't it had jammers & secure comms. 4. Why the second awacs wasn't in the air already when the first one landed. 160 iq PAF took advantage of that. 5. Why didn't the IAF rectify the IFF issue on helicopters? They very well knew the IFF signal was conflicting with other signal but they didn't do anything. We lose 6 of our good men for nothing as well as an expansive hardware & our man-samman. 6. Why it took an utter humiliation for IAF to correct some mistakes & follow some basic air force rules? It took a Mig-21, Mi-17, Abhinandan's captivity & life of 6 good men to implement fleet wide SDR, BVR & jamming solution. PAF has exposed IAF & their so-called professionalism & competency on that very day. Denying it won't do anything.

Your videos are excellent, and your channel is one of few in India where they get up close and personal with the military's machines, but the videos often suffer from repetition and rhetoric. I wish sometimes that you talked about more than just the same old questions, maybe sometimes show off the weaponry of the aircraft, the systems in the cockpit, ask the pilots about incidents they've had over the years, anecdotes you know? it'd really improve the videos reach and also make them more enjoyable, and also why do the videos feel so scripted? the pilots and crew always feel so uptight and as if they're finding it hard to remember their lines? my family is rooted in the army and I've never seen an officer on such high alert, the pilots should really be able to explain the things they want in their way and not be forced to repeat such boring and repetitive lines !! anyways love the videos and hope you take my points in to consideration, ty!

India needs to develop state of the art fighter jet engines and the overall technologies needed to develop gen 6 aircraft on a war footing. This should be #1 priority for the defense ministry. Japan is developing a gen 6 fighter on its own and India should do everything possible to partner with them. I think France is also developing a gen 6 Rafale and this could be another option. My point is we need to skip gen 4.5 and 5 and go for gen 6 directly, otherwise we will always be in playing the catch up game.

These 2 dozen or so jets are not going to make any difference relative to the hundreds of jets China has. The only thing that can and will balance those numbers is if the Tejas MK1A, MK2, TEDBF and hopefully ORCA are manufactured in large numbers. That + Netra Mk 1 and 2 will radically shift the balance of air power in the region. The private sector will not get involved until they see concrete examples of the govt absorbing domestically designed and produced defence products. Right now the opposite / confusing messages are being sent out with regards to the Tata / Mahindra WhaP, for instance. Although I am sure the govt will eventually place the order, the lack of clarity and long drawn out process sends out the wrong message. The archilles heel remains the availability of a indigenous engine, the really long drawn out decision making, and the low rate of production.

trust me brother they haven't gone over anything confidential this is just the air force going over their routine media takes so the people know what's going on, the enemy would be better benefitted by watching that fighter movie than watching these videos lol. and to answer your first question, no these aircraft are most likely in outdoor hangars not in bomb shelters, but this doesnt make much of a difference since their stations are out of range of a ny feasible bombing attack and any missile imbound to such a airbase would be intercepted by our air defence systems.

can you go back to watching alfa defence or whatever chindi choot defence channel you see who just spout nationalistic propaganda, tejas mk1 is largely based on foreign components so its fair to call investing in rafales a reasonable decision until we actually reach a level of self sustainability

Where are all the other Squadron pilots? Interview some youngsters instead of this pain in the ass who wants to hog all the limelight...ek nazar se pata lagta hai ki yeh CO saab must be a big asspain for everyone in the unit.

The plane is so small and cost is so high. No country can become global power without their own aviation industry. West can stop exporting key components any day and cripple Indian air force.
