One of the most difficult topic to digest from the Serrah, I agree with shaykh that these issues should be cleared among Muslims but what frightened me the most is that 90% Muslims are not aware of these issues and when they will hear it from a islamphobe their iman will be shaken! I know some who said I'll not be a Muslim if it is true. May Allah guide us and help us to strengthen our Imaan Ameen...

I think Yasir Qadhi is a great scholar. All these young over zealous Dawah RU-vidrs who say he is not a scholar are foolish. They are more busy "refuting" people instead of gaining knowledge.

I'm glad the sheikh dealt with this topic because this story may cause problems for some believers who don't understand the context.

Mashallah we love our prophet SAW. Nothing strange in this episode. Remember whatever He did was Allah's will.

When I heard of this story, I was so confused and conflicted. But i think the main thing to take away from the concubine stories- is that they were ‘morally permissible’ back then. It was a different place and time- one and a half thousand years ago. I’m sure there are things that are ‘normal’ now, that in a thousand years time, will be shocking to people.

Episode 97 Notes: Important Events in the Personal life of the Prophet SAW - Mariyya Bint Sham’un RA The Prophet SAW was gifted Mariyya RA by Al Muqawqis, the governor of Alexandria, alongside her sister Sirin Bint Sham’un. These two girls were Christian and they were gifted to the church by their nobleman father. Both sisters were exceedingly beautiful. Sirin was a concubine for Hassan Ibn Thabit RA and bore him one son. Mariyya RA was a concubine for the Prophet SAW and later on, she converted to Islam. Mariyya RA never become one of the Ummahatul Mumineen because the Prophet SAW never married her. However, In 8 AH Maria RA bore the Prophet SAW one son, who was Ibrahim RA and in doing so she became Umm Walad. This essentially meant that she was given special rights, one of which includes her being freed upon the Prophet SAWs demise. After the Prophet SAW passed away, she lived for only a few years and then passed away in the Khilafah of Umar RA. Umar RA led her Janazah and buried her in Jannat Al Baqi. - Death of Ibrahim RA Ibrahim RA had a wetnurse and lived for less than 18 months. The Prophet SAW upon finding out that Ibrahim RA was ill, visited Maria RA and he held Ibrahim RA, in his hands and cried. The Prophet SAW crying shocked one of the Sahabah RA who was present. The Prophet SAW responded to this Sahabi RA, that “The eyes cry and heart is sad but, we only say what pleases Allah SWT”. Ibrahim RA passed away in 10 AH and he performed Salaat Al Janazah for him. Ibrahim RA was buried in Jannat Al Baqi. When Ibrahim RA died, there was a solar eclipse which caused the people to state that, the sun is even bereaved at the demise of Ibrahim RA. Upon hearing this, the Prophet SAW held a sermon telling the people that, the solar eclipse is completely unrelated to any man’s demise. Fun Trivia fact: According to the Bible, Prophet Solomon had 1000 wives/concubines and that the Prophet David had 700. Fun Trivia fact: Slaves cannot become eunuchs in Islam Fun Trivia fact: There were rumours about Maria RA that she was being visited by Mabur. So the Prophet SAW sent Ali RA to investigate this. Ali RA found out that Mabur was a eunuch and thus the rumours were false. Asslam o Alaykum, May Allah Pak reward you for your efforts of spreading knowledge. This is first time I have heard that Surah Atahreem's verses were about this story. Previously, all the studies of tafseer I have done (including the tafseer of surah Atahreem done by brother Nauman Ali Khan) described the event of Prophet (S) swearing about not eating honey. May Allah grant us clarity in knowledge and ability understand His wisdom.

Subhanallah, reading old comments and asking question about slavery at time of our prophets s.a.w back then they were allowed. As Muslim we should have that Yaqeen! Right now we are not allowed, Alhamdulillah the first time I heard about Maria, including war captives, I was only 14years of age and Alhamdulillah never questioned because I had a sheikh like sheikh Yasir Qadhi explained and that was enough for me! The story of Prophet's son reminding me the incident where one of the renowned scholars death in Bangladesh. The time he died there happened an earthquake at the same time.People were saying that this happened because of the scholars death then after sometimes this story was shared by someone and people understood their mistake.

Once again, I dont understand... Why people make things so complicated... Whoever criticizes they should relax and think.... This world got rid of slavery due to ISLAM.... Probably this is the only religion insisted on freeing slaves as a salvation from sins... !!! Regarding Hasfa (RA) Incident, its just quite understandable.. she getting upset... In the Islamic world, there were two types of slaves. When you say Mamluk, they were one type. Fair skinned, often Muslim. Most of them were prisoners of war or conquest. They were treated better. They became Kings, Janissaries. The second type who were of darker skin. Central and western African. They were treated badly. Not as Bad as the US but bad enough. They led the Zanj revolt during the Abbasid caliphate. And most of them were caught and sold by slave dealers in Africa. Even during the rule of the Mamluks, which was 14th Century, a physician named Ibn al Akfani wrote a book about how to buy slaves from the market and how to examine them. It mentions that the slaves were sold in the markets of Cairo, buck naked. You can give that a read. "Purchasing a Slave in Fourteenth-Century Cairo: Ibn al-Akfānī's Book of Observation and Inspection in the Examination of Slaves."

Strange that in Pakistan i have always heard the honey version of the tafseer of Surah Tehreem.

How do we know that some of these stories from the Seerah aren't fabricated or exaggerated? I'm not trying to whitewash anything but, If I'm not mistaken, the only book that Allah (swt) has promised to preserve is the Qur'an. We accuse Christians of corrupting their religious texts. How can we be sure Muslims haven't done the same somewhere down the road?

What is milkyaqeen means?

Slavery is unlawful (1) in the absence of the Caliph of the Muslims AND (2) unless it results from captives following a lawful war. Even so, there was always the alternative to {let the captives go free, either with or without any ransom} (47:4). Furthermore, the Ottoman Caliphate had declared - long before the US Abolition - that it prohibited slavery in its realm. Further preliminary remarks before addressing the questions: It should be clear that Islam raised the status of slaves higher than that of free men in unislamic societies even by modern standards. The author of _The House of Saud_, an American journalist, recounts how the staff and management of the New York Waldorf-Astoria hotel were horrified that King Faysal in an early US visit had not only allowed his black servant into the state dining room but had seated him at his very table - a "white-only" table in a "white-only" room! They had no idea that even slaves in Islam had to be FED and CLOTHED with the same food and clothing as their owner as the Prophet upon him peace, had stipulated in his "last pilgrimage" speech: "And your slaves! see that you feed them such food as you eat yourselves and dress them with what you yourself wear. And if they commit a mistake which you are not inclined to forgive then sell them, for they are the servants of Allah and are not to be tormented!" In another hadith he said, upon him blessings and peace: "Be kind to slaves as to your own children...and those that say their prayers are your brethren." A contemporary commentator said: "The masters were obliged not to put slaves under hardship; slaves were not to be tortured, abused or treated unjustly. They could marry among themselves - with their master's permission - or with free men or women! They could appear as witnesses and participate with free men in all affairs. Many of them were appointed as governors, commanders of army and administrators. In the eyes of Islam, a pious slave has precedence over an impious free man." Al-Tabataba'i, Tafsir (16:338-358). What ignorant times we live in, in which a nation that used a legally-enforceable concept of "white-only" since its inception and then went on to use it for two centuries, now crusades against Islam and the rest of the world over self-proclaimed civilizational values. Islam restored dignity to slaves and enhanced their social status both by ancient and modern standards. Islam made no distinction between a slave or a free man, all were treated with equality. It was this fact that attracted non-Muslim slaves to Islam in droves. As someone said, it is sad to see that those who never cease to be vociferous in their unjust criticism of Islam remain blind to this principle of equality when even in this age there are countries where laws are made that discriminate against the vast majority of population to keep them in practical servitude.

Yasir Qadhi made a mistake. The death of Ibrahim is in fact mentioned to be on the same day as the eclipse in Sahih Muslim aswell: Ziyad b. 'Ilaqa reported: I heard Mughira b. Shu'ba saying that the sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) *on the day when Ibrahim died* . Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Verily the sun and the moon are the two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse on account of the death of anyone or on account of the birth of anyone. So when you see them, supplicate Allah, and observe prayer till it is over. [Sahih Muslim Book 4, Hadith 1995]

Mr. Qadhi, would you ever accept an adult human being as a gift? Muhammad gave Sirin to someone else. Is it moral to give another human as a gift to someone else? Do you think Muhammad's other wives were unhappy when Muhammad committed adultery with his sex slave, Maria? Do you think your own mother would like being someone else's sex slave? If not, why do you think the concubines of Ali, Omar, Muhammad and other Muslims wanted to be sex slaves?

what yasir qadhi is saying is wrong the hadith he is quoting from is weak hadith!!!.......here is the sahi hadith regarding that issue that is in sahi bhukari: Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stay (for a period) in the house of Zainab bint Jahsh (one of the wives of the Prophet ) and he used to drink honey in her house. Hafsa and I decided that when the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon either of us, she would say, "I smell in you the bad smell of Maghafir (a bad smelling raisin). Have you eaten Maghafir?" When he entered upon one of us, she said that to him. He replied (to her), "No, but I have drunk honey in the house of Zainab bint Jahsh, and I will never drink it again." Then the following verse was revealed: 'O Prophet ! Why do you ban (for you) that which Allah has made lawful for you?. ..(up to) If you two (wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) turn in repentance to Allah.' (66.1-4) The two were `Aisha and Hafsa And also the Statement of Allah: 'And (Remember) when the Prophet (ﷺ) disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives!' (66.3) i.e., his saying, "But I have drunk honey." Adulatory is gunah e kabeerah. Having sex with slave is for sure is an act of adulatory. If prophets of old testament were having concubines is not an excuse for Mohammed as they were also doing against the will of God. Sheikh sahib must be kwoing about the biblical account but being a Muslim scholar he is forced to be hypocrite on some issues though i give him due respect in many aspects. He tries to speak the truth to his possible extent.

Why didn't he just marry Maria? What was the reason of why he didn't marry her? Why did he need to have Maria, when he had many wives? Why couldn't he have just waited for Hafsa to come back? Also, why did he need Maria as a "slave", why didn't he free her?

Question, why is that POW can't be used as slaves in this time since the battle was fought in the name of jihad. What made this time different than before, besides the obvious answer that we do not do that any more. Also you see the POW, (the captives, the women slaves, the concubines, whatever name it is) I don't see why they would be okay with sleeping with same men that killed their family. It doesn't seem logical, and like how is that so many sahaba practiced azl on the female captives of war, when I personally think that many of them would not be open to doing such an act. This obviously implies that I am sayin they are raping them, I AM not accusing them of that. But it just doesn't many sense that many of female captives were open to act of azl by the same soldiers that killed their ppl.

The story that Shaykh is narrating about Maria is weaker compared to the honey story, which is authentic. "The opening verses of Sūrat al-Tahrim describe an incident in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibited himself from something in order to please his wives. The classical commentators provide two opinions: one is strong and authentic, and the other is weaker and provokes controversy. It has been authentically narrated on the authority of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet prohibited himself from drinking honey to please his wives. Aisha and Hafsa were upset that the Prophet was spending more time with his wife Zainab on account of a honey drink she would serve him, so they secretly agreed to pretend to be offended by the odor. The Prophet did not want to offend his wives, so he swore an oath never to drink it again. Allah revealed the verses telling the Prophet not to prohibit what is lawful. Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would spend time with his wife Zainab bint Jahsh and he would drink a concoction of honey. Hafsa and I agreed that whomever the Prophet visited first, we would say, “I notice a strong odor of mimosa gum on you.” The Prophet visited one of them and she said this to him, so the Prophet said: I have taken a honey drink at Zainab’s house and I will not do it again. The verse was revealed: Why do you forbid yourself from what Allah has made lawful for you? (66:1) Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1474, Grade:Sahih The authenticity of this narration is agreed upon according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Bukhari included it in his explanation of Sūrat al-Taḥrīm. Moreover, Aisha was the direct witness about whom the verses speak, so she would know best what really happened. An alternative explanation of the passage has been narrated by others. In this version, the Prophet prohibits himself from being intimate with his concubine wife to please his other wives. In particular, it is alleged that Hafsa became upset when the Prophet was intimate with Maria the Copt in her house and on her bed, saying: O Messenger of Allah, in my house and on my bed? Source: Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī 66:1 This narration comes on the authority of Zaid ibn Aslam who was from the third generation and not a witness to the events in question. Hence, Ibn Hajar rules that this narrations’s chain of authorities is incomplete (mursal) in Fatḥ al-Bārī 9/288. For this reason, the explanation was not universally agreed upon by the classical commentators. Al-Qurtubi mentions first the story of Aisha followed by narrations that include Maria, then he says: The most correct of these opinions is the first of them, and the weaker of them are the others. Source: Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī 66:1 In other words, the authentic explanation is the one given by Aisha and the stories that include Maria are weak by comparison. Ibn Al-Arabi concludes: Indeed, the only authentic narration is that it was about honey, that the Prophet drank it with Zainab, and Aisha and Hafsa pretended to be offended by it. There occurred what occurred and the Prophet made an oath never to drink it again. He confided that to his wife and the verse was revealed regarding all of them. Source: Aḥkām al-Qur’ān 66:1 In sum, the story about the dispute between Hafsa, Maria, and the Prophet does not have a strong basis in Islam. It is part of the apocryphal traditions that are of varying and questionable degrees of authenticity. Rather, the strongest explanation of the passage, passed down by the direct witness Aisha through an unbroken chain of authorities, is that the verses were revealed about a honey drink.
