I remember the day Pong showed up at our mall arcade. Up till then, it was only pool, pinball, and Pachinko. There was a line snaking all the way down the mall hallway-about a football field's length. I asked "what's going on here?", and a guy said "It's a new game called Pong". "?" "Oh, it's electronic tennis", he said. History in the making!
I agree i think they had a serious looking games and not childish like nintendo (not basshing Nintendo they had some good games too) i found games like strider shinobi and rtype kinda sinister and serious and bloody difficult to boot they dont make um like this anymore
They need to release a "Sega Arcade Collection", they've re-released the same set of Genesis games ad-infinitum. Not that they're not good games mind you, but they have such a breadth of titles across the arcade and other home consoles that they aren't tapping into.
I think arcade games really lend themselves to Collections because they're meant to be consumed in short bursts. I think Sega are somewhat lazy when it comes to these projects so they just go with the Mega Drive because the emulation and control scheme is going to be simple and it'd probably outsell any arcade collection that's more effort. The 3DS 3D Classics Collection had a couple of excellent arcade ports of course and they certainly didn't cheap out getting M2 to port them rather than simply emulating.
I think part of the problem is source code and emulation. Then on top of that, arcade games were more prone to include licenes. Just look at the Car used in Shenmue 2 Outrun. They had to change it from the original. Now in that case the original game didn't actually have a Ferrari License. Yet some legal person said it looked too close and they had to change it for the Shenmue 2 version. Funny thing being, the Saturn Sega Ages version used the original car only a few years earlier. I'm no sure about Turbo Outrun. That is clearly meant to look like a F40 but I don't know if Ferrari gave the go ahead for it, let alone the other cars on screen, one is clearly meant to be a 911.
VaughnJogVlog - at the very least they could release some NEW genesis games in those collections, perhaps get the go-ahead from Konami to re-release "Castlevania: Bloodlines" and "Contra: Hard Corps" etc.? Every collection is the same relatively small sampling of the Genesis' library with glaring omissions like the Thunder Force games. I know licensing can be a bitch, but eventually people are going to stop buying the same games over and over.
Yellowblanka - I’m still waiting for those last two Sega Arcade Classic 3D Collection that was not released on the Nintendo 3DS. Only the first Collection was released.
I love giant scaling sprites in my arcade games, and Sega did it best. I think only Konami's GI Joe and Taito's Night Striker can hang with Sega's work. Excellent as always; you probably have the most respectable Sega channel and outlook on RU-vid. I appreciate what you do.
So great to hear you talk about your experiences in the arcade! I always think back about arcadegames like Mortal Kombat 1, Killer Instinct and Daytona USA, which all made an immense impact - such great memories
Great video! I was a huge Sega fan when I was a kid. I had an NES, but Genesis was my jam. I loved Sega because of the colors and it always seemed like the games they licensed had a bit more of an edge to them. Nintendo was great no doubt, but Genesis games pound for pound just seemed "cooler" to me. I also miss the days of going into an arcade and hearing the chaos of all the cabinets and pinball machines. Being just a little kid and pulling up a stool (!) to reach the controls and display of an Altered Beast or Crime Fighters cabinet was such a thrill. Then being witness to the release of Street Fighter II (six buttons! what?!?!?!) and Mortal Kombat, man the 80s and early 90s were a fantastic time to be a kid.
You forgot one of my all time favorite Sega games from the early 80's..."Star Trek". Many a dollar were spent at my local "aladdin's castle" arcade playing that one..."Welcome aboard, Captain."
Classic stuff man. I was lucky enough to enjoy the tail end of the arcade era in NA and pleased with my visits to the many arcades in Japan a few years ago. We still have arcades in the west in movie theaters and some retro ones but you’re more likely to find a retro console game cafe.
Really enjoying the PS4 exclusive Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise not only is it a sleeper hit but you also need to find some SEGA's classic arcade games in the post apocalyptic wasteland which include OutRun, Space Harrier, Super Hang-on for the arcade and a SEGA Mark III for your hideout (only has Fist of the North Star game)
I missed out on arcades, but I have a bit of weird nostalgia for Altered Beast. I first played it on Mame because it had a cool name, and was near the top of the list (beginning with A!). I played through almost to the end, but ended up not finishing it. The Genesis version felt so toned down in comparison. Strangely, since I've never played the arcade version of Golden Axe, the Genesis version of that game feels awesome to me. Nostalgia can be weird sometimes.
man space harrier was my favorite game as a kid my dad used to take me to the bowling alley where hed go talk to his friends and smoke cigarettes and id get a bunch of quarters
Do you consider the super scaler games and arcade games in general to be pretty immersive? The dopamine hit, the sounds, the ground breaking (for the time) graphics, the interactivity of the medium, and just being in "the zone" focusing on the game exclusively.
It's definitely possible. The arcade in the cab depot down the street from me back then got some games I still have never found the title to in MAME. Wherever they got their rotation of machines, the variety was unreal. I was gutted in 91 when they closed it down.
@@SegaLordX man I really miss arcades! You see anything even resembling an arcade now and it's slot machines, those shelves full of coins that get pushed off, claw machines and things that give you tickets. There are no games :-( if I had space I'd love a real retro arcade! Sadly I don't have enough space.....or enough cash lol
I absolutely love your channel. You get better and better every episode. The content is getting better as well. There is no one on RU-vid who wax poetic about Sega better than you do. Keep doing what you do. I loved this episode.
Dickens Dumont I completely agree. He doesn’t even have to tell us he loves Sega, you can just tell by the way he narrates his content. So glad I found this channel a few months ago.
Behind all these great games was the man Yu Suzuki, who never ceased to innovate. He is the Shigeru Miyamoto of Sega, sadly he did not gain as much fame as his counterpart. He was also the creator of Shenmue. I just thought he’s worth a mention in your video, but a great overview as always.
@@SegaLordX I was not a fan of the Genesis shadow dancer. I thought the arcade Shadow Dancer was superior and found it to be really scaled down for Genesis. Just my thoughts
Man, everyone one of your videos almost causes me nostalgic tears, from that sega inro from Astal to the content, it's just so enjoyable and emotional to watch. I remember being so good at Space Harrier that some guy payed me to finish it because his kid wanted to watch
I was incredibly lucky that my Aladdin's Castle had the huge deluxe Galaxy Force II sit-in cab. It was $1.50 per credit, but I didn't care. It completely blew me away and was worth every penny. I truly miss that arcade!!
Another awesome release! Unfortunately, I was a bit too young in the mid 80s to play some of these games in arcades, but some like hang-on and outrun were still there in the early 90s when I could. The Sega name for me back then meant big awesome looking machines that cost 50 cents or more to play so there was always a mystique around them. I remember watching people play being amazed at what I was seeing, then hopping in and not being able to reach the pedals, lol.
I remember visiting my local arcade in the late 80s and being blown away by the likes of power drift, outrun and golden axe. So many great games I just never had enough pocket money to play them all! Great days.
I Have Always Been A Sega Fan Boy ! They Defined My Love For Video Games. Thank You For Your Posts. Your Channel Is By Far, My Favorite RU-vid Channel.
I think it came in waves of highs and lows. Sega's proliferation of big titles in the mid to late 80's was huge, then another explosion once the Model 1/2 got onto the scene.
Sega Lord X - I totally agree Sega was the16 bit arcade king! I have so much love and nostalgia for 16 bit games from the 1980's to the late 1990's most of the best games were Sega.
I'm so with you man. I was like 8 years old looking at Atari 2600 games with disgust. Except for pitfall maybe. It's because so may ports were crap!! Arcade games were like crack to us kids
Outrun, Super Hang-On, Turbo Outrun and After Burner was my all-time favorite Yu Suzuki Arcade of all-time. Also my other favorite Sega Arcade Game Quartet, Super Zaxxon, Astro Blaster, Teddy Boy Blues, Fantasy Zone, Shinobi and my all-time favorite Ninja Princess.
Haha! I thought you said "Russel War"! 😂 Another great video, dude! Golden Axe was the first arcade game I ever played! Still love it today, it's a timeless classic imo.
I'm from the south here in the US, where wrestling is often pronounced "wrastlin". Just getting my lips to put out sound any different from that was a miracle.
SEGA could wake up one day in the 80s and just drop one of the most bomb-ass arcade games ever. And now they're stuck porting the same 30 Genesis games over and over with bad emulation, making mediocre Sonic games, *still* ruining the Shining series, and maybe once in a while they'll give us a pretty good niche action game with Yakuza. Man what the fuck happened?
For me Sega's and Taito's arcade efforts owned my childhood. Space Harrier is my first video game experience (probably my favorite game), and I still think Galaxy Force 2 has yet to be beaten visually. Capcom and Konami deserve their place, I always have Taito tracks and Super Scaler songs come to my head when I think of the arcade.
I was always a Nintendo kid growing up, but when you add up all of their home consoles, arcade games throughout the decades and even the software they developed for their prior competitors like Bayonetta, Madworld & Vanquish just to name a few...Sega really was king. In a way, they were kinda like the original SNK , being how they relied so heavily on their own IP as their best arcade and home titles, putting third party material to shame as far as legacy. It truly is sad to see them out of the console race. Growing up in the 80s and 90s and witnessing the height of the arcade experience is sincerely missed. Thanks for this nostalgic and epic video!
Oh, come on now, SLX. The Colecovision can't really be lumped in with the Atari 2600 and Intellivision. Sure, the SMS and NES would soon fly past it, but there were some GOOD arcade ports on the system. You even showed one, Carnival. It's no Outrun, but the Colecovision version was near perfect. Many love Colecovision Zaxxon, I was not a huge fan, but it's impressive for the time. Venture, Ladybug, Pepper II, Looping, and Frenzy were all REALLY close to arcade-perfect. Even flawed efforts like Donkey Kong and Planet of Zoom were fun. I still have a Colecovision and fire it up occasionally, it was MUCH better than it's predecessors. Dismissing it from a later-time perspective just isn't fair, just like it would be an injustice to dismiss the Genesis for not being an XBox
Sega was always my favourite console back then and was far superior to Nintendo. The variety of games Sega offered was "WOW" the 8-bit graphics were ahead of it's time and the Lightphaser such a great revolution . ( things like that we don't have anymore today sadly ) Arcade games from Sega were neat and like Sega Lord X said in the video very beautiful , i so miss these times spending tons of coins in thos arcade machines such great memories . As for the Sega Master System games here are some of my favourites in non-particular order . Golden Axe, Golden Axe Warrior, Thunder Blade, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Assault City, Gain Ground , Phantasy Star , Y's , Time Soldiers , Altered Beast , Submarine Attack , Shinobi , Cyber Shinobi , Asterix , Wonderboy 3 , Mickey Castle of Illusions , Double Hawk , Operation Wolf , Rambo 3 .
Yeah seeing Space Harrier in 1986 in the arcades, it was like some portal had opened. Crowds gathering just looking. Could hear AAAAHHH on the beach lol. UK Sandown Isle Of Wight. 1986.
OMG I remember Wrestle War!! didn't know my favorite dev/pub (SEGA) made that game! I guess I didn't know about game makers back then, and only focused on the games. Man, I used to pump quarters into that wrestle game. And always wondered why it never came to home consoles.
Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker on the Arcade was released by Sega I guess. You could make an episode about Sega Michael Jackson games and the Sonic song produced by MJ. By the way, Moonwalker on the Mega Drive wasn’t a perfect game but I’d so much fun with it.
You are so right about Sega...back then it was if they could see no limits and they went absolutely off the hook in the arcades. What always bothered me about Sega was they didn't include any hardware scaling on the Genesis. I know it would have driven the cost up but had they went with a minor upscaler they may have put themselves out of Nintendo's reach. At that time Nintendo was more about gaming in the home and I honestly don't think they had access to the same resources as Sega (programmers, artists, and the like). They had the money but were not as bleeding edge.
I remember the r360. And that awful hologram game. Sadly these beasts usually cost more so you only had 1 go if that. Dragons lair also cost like 50p when everything else was 10p or 20p. it was the size and design of the machines not just the games.
These are games I want Sega to release a compilation of, the closes we get to these are the Sega Arcade Gallery for GBA. If only they take a break from the Genesis for a while and focus more on these I would definitely be there to try them all.
Oh man the old days when arcades were the best graphically and gameplay wise compared to what you could get on a home console, good times. Sega had a lot of classics that's for sure
In my humble opinion,Sega,Atari, and Konami made the best games of the 80's and 90's without doubt. It's such a shame that arcades aren't really a 'thing' anymore. So many happy days spent in them as a youth
Sega to me will be king of the arcades, the super scaler series blew me away. I really felt that any possibility could be realised in the arcades. lol that was before polygons became mainstream. but that's just how impressive ans detailed Segas games were. Great video.
Space hairrer is older then me and I'm 30 how could have I not known those Graphics actually originated in the arcades I never knew they were so Advanced before I was alive
I found an interesting thing in ps2 purchase a CD 1to 50 game but in the end I saw a porn movie my father is coming so I directly plug out my ps2 chord hahaha
Hey Sega Lord X, I'm wanting to get a turbo control pad, but don't know which one is the best. Any recommendations? I've seen the Fighting Commander SS, it's pricey and wouldn't want to commit to buying one unless it was clearly the best one out there.
Fighting Commander SS is a decent pad. The SG Tornado Pad is also good. Keep in mind though, none of them have a d-pad as good as the official Japanese controller. If you aren't averse to it, the Japanese HSS-0104 has great rapid fire and a good stick for the money. The Western variant went cheap on the stick, though.
Nostalgia .... just what it used to be :) I remember Outrun being in the student bar .... God I spent some money trying to beat it (and failing lol). Keep up the great work mate :)
Neo geo was a touch better to do to the fact that u could have it at home but it was really expensive a bit ahead of the times to get home graphics like that
