I picked up a Game Gear recently, but the sound on it didn't work. This is a common problem, so let's take a look at how to fix it.

Thanks for the great video, Colin! Makes me a *little* more confident about opening up my Sonic blue Game Gear that I'm certain has bad caps! The screen is dim and the sound crackles, so its probably a full-on cap replacement job...

I half-wish TV Tuners still worked, or someone made a digital TV tuner meant to work with handheld devices.

I changed the capacitors on my mainboard, and that fixed the screen (although I will need a new screen because of a couple of vertical lines on it, but it's very playable now), and I also changed the ones on the sound board, but I still have no sound at all with either the speaker or headphones... is there any other part that can break on the soundboard? If I just decide to change the whole soundboard, do you think this would fix it or is there something on the mainboard that could be causing the problem? Thanks!!

I know this vid is 4 years old, but I just noticed the Monokuro-boo figures you have on your shelf. You're probably the only other person here in the US that I've seen with merchandise of them.

I still have mine and my sisters game gears from when we were kids. I always wanted the tv tuner but never did get it. This fix has been on my list to do for a while. One has good audio but bad video, and the other has good video but bad audio.

Hey can black vertical lines go away with new capacitors? Or is this more likely lcd and it’s buggered lol there is still the game picture shown, Cheers!!

I didn't get any sound from the speaker, although the headphones were working fine! I started by replacing the small capacitors and then went on and replaced all 5 of them. The problem still persists! I have sound from the headphones but there is still no sound from the speaker!!! What should I do now? What could be causing the problem?

I wonder how hard would it be to modify a game gear TV tuner for ATSC? Current broadcast signals. I really don't know the differences in the actual hardware of a NTSC tuner VS an ATSC tuner but even a failed attempt would be interesting to see.

I did a couple of these recently (well, full recap) and one of the audio boards was still dead when I finishes recapping. I used surface mount caps seemingly identical to the originals so I could not see under. them to troubleshoot Obviously, I didn’t want to ruin new caps by removing them again so I went back and traced everything, with the continuity setting on my meter, comparing connections between the working board and the non-working board. Eventually I noticed that there was a via under C3 which only seemed to be connected to pin 1 of CN1. It had to connect to something else or pin 1 wouldn’t exist, so I checked my good board and found that it was supposed to connect to the positive side of C3. One jumper and it worked perfectly again. :) I’ve seen others with the “corroded via” problem so I now suggest tracing it BEFORE you install new caps.

I bought a used GG yesterday for $5 and it was untested so I said screw it and got it. After blowing out the connectors with an air can it works great! Except for the sound, at max volume its very faint and hard to hear (works perfectly with headphones tho) so I may be in the market to try this solder job since it was only $5 I can try my hand at fixing a GG. Otherwise its like $13 for a new sound board already recapped so that may even be a better route!

Great video, I remember when i was a kid and at daycare. This one kid always had one and very rarely did he share it hah but one day he let me play it and ever since i always wanted one. I do collect and have lots of video games in general. I honestly forgot about them cause i always had ds / 3ds. Well the other day at GoodWill they had one in great shape ( no scratches on screen, came with 3 games extra battery thing and the same case everyone seems to have all for $20. It had a sticker that said works also so i was happy to find out it did work. But after some further testing i noticed the sound did not work at all. I know how to solder but it seems to be cheaper to just get a new sound board. So i ordered one for $8 and hopefully that fixes it. Also i noticed it wont power on unless i have the power or extra battery plug inserted. so the batteries in the back wont work. Is that because of the capasitors? the right side batteries were curoaded so i assume that could have been the issue. I don't know if i will keep it for myself or try to make a buck off it. Whats your suggestion. With what i paid for it and the new sound board it cost $28 and i have the extra battery thing for it with case and i have about 15 - 20 games. Is it worth much of a proffit or should i just keep it. I the the colors are awesome for a handheld myself.

You should also do a video showing the screen swap. I think people are dropping in a DS backlight replacing the tube that is already present. Its pretty cool since you're already modding it.

5:27 No, that is not true! there is still a fix for it. All you need to do is find out where the trace of the positive end leads to on the chip. and just solder a cap's positive end to that particular pin on the chip. As for the negative end, it does not matter, as all of the negative points connect to ground. At the end, you may wanna put kapton tape or electrical tape to prevent shorting on the Game Gear's metal interior. If at that point if it does not work, then you may wanna invest in a new sound board. Here are the solder points I used on the sound chip. C1 = Pin 8 C2 = Pin 5 C3 = Pin 2 C4 = Pin 2 C5 = Pin 1 C6 = Pin 4 C7 = Pin 3 C8 = Pin 4

I just got a game gear today in the mail. The sound only works with a headset plugged in and only comes on with batteries. The adapter does not make it come on. I'm not a person to be able to fix it so I'm pretty down right now about this. I don't know anyone not fix it or where to go to get the things to fix it.

I’d start by seeing if there are any retro gaming stores in your area - a lot of times, they’ll have an employee who’s experienced with console repairs. If they don’t, they might know of someone.

@@ThisDoesNotCompute there isn't any store in Tulsa that sells just consoles and games.. there's a place called vintage sells mainly movies and some play stations nintendo etc. They sell sega game gear games but not consoles.

Just a word of advice: go on a reputable industry parts seller like arrow.com or mouser or digikey and buy the surfacemount version of those capacitors yourself. I know arrow does free shipping and you can often get all these caps together for less than a dollar. Just look online for a list of what voltage and capacitance value those caps need to be and also what size.

When I up graded from my iPhone 4 to my s6 I thought youtube would be better, and it was not. It may have looked better but now it lacks functionality. In my subs side bar it no longer gives notofactions about subs uploads/activity and I cannot switch and remove accounts as gracefully. I have to go all the way in toy phones settings app and past 3 more menus to remove a Google account, with also removes all of the other Google features. I just thought that was funney, and at least the spell check works great, and the keyboard vibrates on each letter.
